As I understand it this song was NOT composed by Ritchie. It is called The Loner, written by Max Middleton. It was also covered by Gary Moore. I don’t understand why Ritchie presented as his own!!!

Beautiful version of the tune written by keyboardist Max Middleton, and first recorded as a dedication to Jeff Beck on Cozy Powell's 1979 album, Over the Top. with David Clempson on guitar, as a tribute to Jeff Beck and then Gary Moore recorded it in 1987 as a tribute to Phil Lynott ... and now another tribute to Jon Lord ... excellent
You have quite correctly pointed out this is NOT a Blackmore composition. The original song being called “The Loner” I am sure many people here are unaware of that. So why is Ritchie renaming this song? As for his interpretation I think it is brilliant, BUT Blackmore could do this with any plaintive melody. A bit like James Galway doing great hits, a compilation of great ballads, or Ballads by the Shadows. This is Ritchie actually not working very hard to pay a tribute to his friend except for the arrangement at the end of the song which is very touching. More of your own compositions please Ritchie and credit a song to whom it should be.
