Thanks for watching! Наука
Neutral buoyancy, positive buoyancy, and negative buoyancy. You're spot-on about how most people don't realize these are all things! I'm a diver, both SCUBA and free diving, and when I talk about negative buoyancy and how it impacts swimming abilities, people are typically amazed that other directions of buoyancy exist.
Also a hard concept when you're teaching fledgling pilots is the idea of Equilibrium and the 4 forces acting upon an aircraft in straight and level flight.
@@DarkInstinct05 throwing out a wild guess: Thrust, Lift, Drag, Gravity?
That negative buoyancy is a great way to go into an uncontrolled decent during deep dives. Often people don’t realize you can go into a underwater free fall.
@@Lierofox that's a bingo. The Slow Flight exercise is the best way to demonstrate as such.
For those interested, according to news clips and recordings of Larry’s radio transmissions, Larry intentionally tried to fly over some mountains in that chair. He had a radio he used to communicate with his girlfriend, and he actually did use the gun to shoot out some of the balloons. He actually sounded pretty chill as he was going higher and higher, but I imagine that changed quickly.
I would guess his underwear needed changing by the end, too...
According to wiki, his plan was well thought out. He didn't just want to float above his yard, but planned to float over the Mojave desert. He knew about buoyancy and that he would gain serious altitude, he had water jugs as ballast, a pellet gun to shoot out balloons when he wanted to land, he wore a parachute, had a CB radio, beer and sandwiches. He also had a ground crew. He was also only airborne for 45 minutes, not 12 hours.
They also say he died by suicide at age 44... 😪
My bff was one of the extras in the grocery store episode! She wore the hot pink pants and was easy to find in wide shots. She said she had a fantastic time and likes to talk about the experience.
I'm really happy to listen your old mythbusters story, Adam. I hope in the future you can invite Robert Lee or JD Nelson. Having conversations with them about their favorite mythbusters moments. Stay safe Adam. :D
For those who are curious about Lawnchair Larry, Jon Bois has a fantastic video about him. Looking up "Jon Bois Larry" should pop it up immediately. It's under his "Pretty Good" vid series and it is a beautiful story. A wondrous experience that only he will ever get the chance to have.
On July 2, 1982, Larry Walters (April 19, 1949 - October 6, 1993) made a 45-minute flight in a homemade airship made of an ordinary patio chair and 45 helium-filled weather balloons. The aircraft rose to an altitude of about 16,000 feet (4,900 m), drifted from the point of liftoff in San Pedro, California, and entered controlled airspace near Long Beach Airport.
The National Air and Space Museum has the chair on display.
He was very lucky he didn't get taken down by a plane either accidentally or a military plane on purpose.
My favorite thing about this is the quote from the FAA rep saying something to the nature of "We are sure that he has violated some part of the Federal Air Regulations, and as soon as we figure out which part, we plan to charge him."
Pretty good story
*the full story does not have much of a nice ending as later his life kinda fell apart after a bit of fame and ended in a very sad way*
Glad to get to hear about all the early episodes, they were so cool and even the music was a bit different and more of eclectic and changed as the show grew and morphed, though it was always fun and informative at the same time. Thank you for deciding to do it for all of us to be entertained and informed for all those years and eventually meeting the rest of the crew over time.
Having watched mythbusters religiously as a child, I never realized just how smart and talented all of the guys and gals were until I was an adult. I really appreciate just how down to earth all of them are
Thankyou Adam for many years of excellent entertainment kind regards Rob Australia
Little flies? How about building a giant fine-mesh bug zapper?? Would love to see you waving it around the shop zapping bugs!
When covid hit, a grocery store here changed the checkout lines to be a single line that fed all the registers and... I absolutely loved it. I'm such an efficiency fiend when it comes to these things that when I make a bad decision or, rather, see that I could have made a better decision it just eats at me. But to have someone else choose for me which line to go into, all that's gone because I didn't choose anything.
Yeah ours did the same. Just one big line down the center of the store and an employee directing traffic. Worked well.
Of course that is the best way, but businesses never use it, only banks (yes a business) and post office and government agencies
@@jeffreysmith236 true!
The only time I have ever seen a single queue at a grocery store was when I went with my uncle to a commissary on an Air Force base in Texas. That was 40 years ago. I've wished for them at my local stores ever since, to no avail. Apparently (most) shoppers hate them because that single line is much longer than six individual lines would be and people would rather stand in line behind 2 people for 30 minutes than stand in line behind 12 people for 3 minutes.
@@Khrrck think the only time ive ever seen a single line is when only 1 register was open...but that was also back before self checkout was common
It really is amazing how fast a line will move when it is one line that feeds a bunch of cashiers. During the early days of the pandemic a local grocery store around where I am had started using this method to help keep people separated and it felt 100x faster to cash out than just standing behind and waiting for someone to finish with their carts.
Rocket car. Only episode i watched with my Dad before he died.
Oh my, same with me. It was a perfect show for him as he was a genius at building and fixing things with only plans in his head. I wish we could have watched so many more together...
Damn dude, I watched a lot of Mythbusters with my dad when he was in the end of his battle with cancer. You just brought back some memories. He actually did have some lighter moments of laughter while watching that show though. At points like that it's the small things that mean everything. Sincerely sorry for your loss.
Deadliest Catch was a favorite too, he dug Captain Phil. Who didn't though?!
@@blackphillip8486 I would come home from school and watch M.A.S.H. Hogans hero's match game with Gene Rayburn. My dad lost his leg in the 90s from a diabetes fueled infection from stepping on a nail. He had a major stroke in 2000. I cooked for him feed him changed his diapers showered him. My mom needed to work to pay the bills so from 14 to 17 i had no social life. Just my dad and classic TV.
@@gl15col my dad was a car dealer. He actually worked at universal Ford in NY and I and my brother met the Undertaker and Paul bearer. It was when his skull was injured from a bad move. He had a ace bandage type cast half mask on the top of his head. Im a former construction worker but went to autotech because evan after his stroke my dad wanted to start his own dealership.
20 years!!! WOW 😯 ❤
Wish he'd bring on Kari for a guest spot, just got done with her book and loved it. Her, Tory and Grant were all awesome. Still need to watch White Rabbit Project...
I liked the shop till you drop episode. It was good to see that you came to the same conclusion that we were taught about queueing theory back in about 1986 in computer science class .
Sadly even the beloved Tested Adam Savage You tube account is being targeted by scammers

New watcher to the channel, long time Mythbuster fan.
Sorry if this is a repeat question but: Was there ever an experiment the producers would not let you do or that you fillmed and they would not let you air?
I think this was answered. If I remember correctly, it was mostly their insurance company was the reason certain things weren't done. There is an episode where he goes into better detail.
I've seen a bunch of Adam's other vids and 2 come to mind. 1 was the myth that the cardboard boxes that sugary breakfast cereal comes in is healthier than the cereal itself. They tested it by using 3 groups of 3 rats: a control group, a cereal group, and a cardboard group. The cardboard group was so malnourished that one of them killed and ate the other two in his cage. All footage and mention of the rats was cut from the final episode.
2 was one that was brought up late into the show's lifetime, and was never tested. The myth is that if you float pumpkins in a pond filled with ducks, you will eventually be able to wear a pumpkin on your head and swim out to the ducks, and the ducks won't react at all. The original myth goes that you can actually grab them and drown them, but obviously a more humane way of testing was never thought of before the show ended, so the myth was never seriously considered.
Adam has talked about an idea they had for testing credit card security, which was scrapped because credit card companies "asked" Mythbusters not to do it.
There was "Can you make explosives from common household chemicals" that was filmed and then never shown because it turned out the answer was "yes, very easily".
7:40 The only shops that I've seen do this method (1 line to multiple registers) are Fry's Electronics and Micro Center. Fry's is no more, but there's a MC not far from where I live. The local Best Buy also sorta does this, but they're not very busy these days.
Simone Gertz (yes, it's pronounced Yet's) is the BOMB! 🤣 What a wonderful, whimsical, creative person!
Nice Video thanks adam sir.
Oh, I remember the lawn chair episode. I think I caught that after I'd seen future series/episodes and watched it thinking 'their safety procedures got a lot better'. I'm sure it was done safely, although Adam's expressions may have disagreed at times. But couldn't help thinking about what would have happened if the tether let go.
Please make a watch collection video!
Most video files have a section they store meta data like author, copyright, etc. they also usually store the date the video was recorded. Open the video with VLC or something that can read that meta data and it may have the real original date.
I was a zombie. It was so so much fun!!
January of 03, wow I feel old lol. That was a month before my unit was activated for Iraq lol. So long ago!
Just wanted to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Man you have an amazing life.
I didn't know that we have the same birthday, that's cool.
Aussies loved Mythbusters on SBS. When it went Beyond Productions we knew it was our show. By the way I wear Blundie's for work.
Wow, that's Pretty Good
Huh. I have to go back and rewatch that grocery store episode. I remember it being multiple lines was more efficient, but the single line to multiple stations left customers with a better experience. I’d swear that on the stand right now. Crazy that I “remember” it so differently. Perhaps the Mandela effect?
Yeah no, I remember the same. Multiple lines were more efficient, probably because it takes time for people to walk from the unified line to the next open lane. But the unified lane was universally preferred, because it felt fairer. And the difference wasn't really huge, it wasn't 2x or anything, so it might just be worth it for customer happiness.
yes, you are exactly right despite Adam's emphatic declaration here.
Wow! I thought that was James Gunn in the thumbnail.😄
Damn you just posted his last night for some reason I thought this video was 10 years old LOL
Theres's often metadata in the files that may have the correct date...
I have had for a long time an idea for a weird gym. It came from doing CPR class. I thought, what if instead of weights & fitness machines, you do different classes? Like CPR, drumming, throwing plates (like those frustration sessions), and the fending off zombies could be one. Weird stuff that takes strength & energy. I know, totally random....
Going to the gym is dull in my opinion, and I'm sure many others think the same... Although, I think some of those may require too much setup and not have enough activity to draw anyone in _(and CPR might be too safety oriented to be allowed so nonchalantly)..._
But yea you might be onto something regarding throwing plates, axes, or anything zombie related! 🤔 😁👍
@@DUKE_of_RAMBLE Thank you for the thoughts! I'm glad I made the comment, because it was just bouncing around my head for so long😆 I know, I have weird thoughts, lol!
@@gohawks3571 No problem. 😁👍
In my opinion... Weird thoughts, aka "outside the box thinking", are the BEST thoughts and are what lead to advancement. If they were normal, then everyone is having them and... well, someone wouldn't no doubt tried it already! Which if we didn't hear about it talking off as a new venture, probably means they weren't successful. 😉
So now I want to go back and watch the grocery store episode to see if I can pick out Simone...lol
"Happy Birthday, Adam. Good luck with this chair thing. Here's your gift: everlasting fame."
Interesting 🎉
I always wondered in the zombie episode, or any where paintball guns were used as analogs for real guns, why you didn't use semi automatic paintball guns instead of pump action ones. Jamie would have defended himself much better with semi automatics that were able to be reloaded quickly then he was able to with pump actions
I have to add this. Because my child hood hero died a few days ago. Jason David Frank from the 90s mighty morphin power rangers. And it reminds me of Adam and Jamie. Ya Worked together for years but except for work / comicons and fan meet events they didnt see eye because of your individual genius. Mark StJohns vlog about Jasons frank's death, he. like you, admitted they had their diffrences but at the end basically said once a ranger always a ranger. Invite Jamie over for a project you can both work on. Bury the hatchet. Have a good one. 988 US mental health hotline.

Adam, y'all know what I'm talking about.
July 15th to August 1st is 6 weeks?
Legend Savage will always be legend status..
Tangent comment. If there are a lot of lines to choose from when checking out of a grocery store look for how many items are in the baskets. Three people with a few things will probably be quicker then one person with a full basket.
Thanks.
Where's the picture??
What brand is your leather iPhone case?!? Need a good distressed one.
Hopefully someone knows!!!
For those who want to check it out, he's actually talking about the Volunteer Special episode, not Shop Til You Drop as the one with the grocery store line. Oh and also despite how emphatic he says it, the single line method was actually quite slower and less efficient than the multiple lines method.
@krectus but the volunteers preferred the single lane over the multiple lanes, even though it was slower. The MythBusters theorized it was because people saw one line moving faster than the line they were in and believed that the multiple lanes would give a lane an advantage over another lane. By having everyone in one lane, no one has an advantage.
I always thought the balloon lawn chair guy did it intentionally. I was in California when it happened. All the news outlets made me think that.
He did, Adam's memory isn't always correct any more than mine is.
HEY...!!!! My Birthday is July 13th and my Mom's is July 12th

Hrm. "Lawnchair Larry" was a story I remember reading about in 1990 and it was old news then. I thought it had been thoroughly debunked. Not that it wasn't *feasible* but that it never really happened and was just an urban myth like alligators in the sewers or honest politicians. Also, "I say this to every zombie I meet, " is not what you expect a television personality to be able to say with a straight face! 😅
It WAS old news in 1990, yes. Because it happened in 1982. It was well covered by the press at the time. Maybe when you're thinking hoax you're thinking of "balloon boy".
Digital pictures EXIF data might have the dates....
Larry climbs into his lawn chair
Waves a goodbye
Unties from the post
Races towards the sky
Takes a sip out of his beer and says, "It looks amazing"
He said "It looks amazing"
Climbs until he can't think
Can't hear a sound
Shoots out the balloons and falls to the ground
Jumps out off of his chair and says, "It was amazing"
He said "It was amazing"
I always think you did the great mirror myth wrong the mirrors should have been on poles you move into focus beam then let go as people twitch and move which is why you got the results
In common with many presenters Adam Savage ends with "I'll see you......" Can he really see us, or does he need to find a better closing remark?
Larry, Larry, Larry. The family still can't agree on whether he was an idiot or the coolest dude ever.
Lawnchair Larry sadly died of suicide in 1993 at age 44.
What happened to Jamie
I wish mythbusters would come back on air. TV shows now are TERRIBLE
A store where I live does the 1 line thing, and I'm sure I've seen it around over the years after that episode went up.
I want to say thanks to who ever chose to no longer have the physiologist lady.
Unwanted physiology lessons and reading people the way she was is super creepy for me, and feels too much like reading horoscopes and tea leaves to explain things that don't need explaining.
My favorite person to help you was the visually impaired guy who drove you around. I'm sorry I forgot his name offhand, but he seemed like a really cool guy.

I'm watching you scare the hell out of a cop while you drive drunk, love all the car testing stuff, except round abouts, they are so dangerous to kids, here all the schools have round abouts, just so dangerous, cars driving the wrong way, too fast, not knowing when to go, yuck, makes me so mad, cool back to the show, with drunk Adam. I'm 54 years old and my bucket list has three things on it, one is meeting Adam, almost got to Salt Lake City con a couple years ago but covid scared me off.

I thought Mythbusters was first experiment. Can two average guys make sucessfull show?
Plausible.
i was thinking, just cut the bags of sand off and youll float down.. NOPE YOU GO UP FASTER!!!, you cut the balloons to go down,

A RUclipsr named Huggbees actually just did a video on Lawn Chair Larry. It was really in depth and well made I heavily suggest it.
