STORYLINE:
Hundreds of firefighters from around the United States gathered in New York on Thursday morning for a funeral mass honouring Captain Terence Hatton, one of the firefighters killed in the attack on the World Trade Centre.
His wife had learned two days after his death that she is pregnant.
Beth Petrone-Hatton is New York Mayor Rudolf Giuliani's executive assistant.
The flag-draped coffin was carried on a fire engine past his wife and fellow New York firefighters gathered at St. Patrick's Cathedral .
The 41-year-old Hatton, who earned 19 citations for bravery during his 21 year career, was remembered as a hero and role model for both his unborn child and the nation.
The funeral was attended by Mayor Giuliani and Governor George Pataki.
"I've known many, many fine men in my life, and eulogised too many," the mayor told mourners. "Terry Hatton really stood out. ... He is the kind of man I would like my son to grow up and become."
The Mayor said it might be the most difficult of all the funerals he has attended following the attack on September 11.
Captain Hatton's funeral was one of seven for New York firefighters on Thursday.
18 more are due to take place on Friday.
Another service was planned for later on Thursday for the more than 300 employees of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey who are missing and presumed lost after the WTC attacks.

The ultimate sacrifice. Firefighters go to work everyday, knowing that they may lose their life but don’t expect to. RIP all lost at WTC.
Note at 0:39 this engine becomes the new temporary Rescue 1, after the old beloved RES1CUE was lost to heavy damage in the attacks. Logistically speaking, the FDNY was in shambles for months after the attacks
Christopher C Terry was one of the funniest and best rescuemen in the fire service. My opinion.
Thank you FDNY for your service and bravery and courage above and beyond the call of duty 24 /7 /365 days a year
Rest Easy Brother
My Grandmother was responsible for coordinating the honor guards and other funeral related items for fallen FDNY Firefighters who were members of her parish after 9/11. Even though she wasn't in the building she was still deeply effected by it(many people in my family joined the FDNY after immigrating from Ireland, and one of her daughters used to work in the towers.). If you watch the Nauden documentary, the FDNY command post is really close to the place she would meet my Aunt for dinner after work. The toll that took on her was immense. I clearly remeber her telling my, how she still always make sure to know how to get out of any building we are in as quickly as possible.
Captain Terry Hatton of Rescue 1. RIP 🙏
God bless you
Rip. Terry Hatton and Rescue 1 were brave heros. Men in a class of their own.
May they all RIP🙏🙌💙🙏🙌❤️
My partner aunt has cancer now she was helping on 911 they called her a hero she is probably going to get a similar farewell to this
Just wondering does anyone know if he was ever identified from the attack on. 9/11
Michael Boyd yes he was identified
No bagpipes?
RIP 🩸🩸🩸➕
Captain MANHATTAN ...OUTSTANDING. Rest in peace Terry Hatton.
He was Captain Manhattan indeed
He was the boss of all the firefighters
