- OK so this snowballed.
I was really disappointed that my older 2010 iMac was faster than this Late 2015 i5. Mainly because I had a SSD in the 2010 iMac. So I decided to give this old mac a similar makeover. However this quickly snowballed into a complete refresh for not a huge amount of money. Result is a sleek iMac with a ton of power.

I was able to:
1. Fit Western digital 500gb NVME drive, with adapter. (requires kapton tape to stop shorting)
2. Fit 2TB SSD in place of the original HDD, using a cheap adapter plate.
3. Replace the i5 processor with an i7 6700k processor (VERY TRICKY).
4. Replace all the memory, as the memory that came with the mac was all over the place: 4,4,8,16!
Most of this is as per the IFixit guides, and others. However, as apple have their own proprietary specification for stick drives an adapter is needed to fit the NVME

However it needs kapton tape to cover the contacts, otherwise there is a danger it will short out on the metal socket on the motherboard.
BY FAR the most risky part of this job is fitting the i7 processor. Unlike most PC motherboards there is no retaining mechanism for the chip, so it need alot of care to install. The leaf sprung metal bracket for the rear of the heat sink is also a real pain, you need to get all screws lightly in the threads before attempting to wind it on. ITS SERIOUSLY TRICKY.
Because of this risk I didn't want to spend big on an i7 processor only to break it. So I picked up a second hand PC with an i7 6700k chip in and flipped the i5 in to that, then sold that PC on. Meaning the i7 only cost £50.

Thanks so much for this Evlain! My Dad passed away several years ago and I had his old iMac late 2015 sitting on the shelf. My kids are in need of a computer now to do homework and such but with the current specs this thing runs really slow for the apps they are wanting to use.
Everything was super clear in your directions and I was able to find comparable parts. The one thing I want to make sure I purchase correctly is the adapter to fit the NVME. The link in your description is "broken" - must no longer be available. Also is an adapter needed to convert from the HDD to the 2.5 SSD or are you using the 500gb NVME in place of that altogether?

Hi, thanks for the video. I just went through my iMac 27 from late 2015 upgrade myself. Fusion Drive installed. An NVMe M.2 1 Tb from WD SN770. It's definitely worth doing. The iMac has become very fast. With Black Magic Speed Disk the speed Write & Read measured just under 3000 Mb/s.
You have balls replacing all this complex stuff, I'm scared enough as it is doing an SSD upgrade in 21" 2015 iMac, the thought of removing the screen gives me nightmares

Super. I have in iMAc 5k, wide 2014. I notice that the screen turns off, or does not load, or shows artifacts.
Is it from the Graphic card? It can change?
My drive failed and I wasn't sure I'd need a set of brackets for the replacement SSD without opening it. Thanks for this. Makes me miss my thick bodied iMac with an easy to open magnetic screen. It got struck by lightning 😅

just changing hdd to ssd would not cause issues with hibernation, by far the quickest and easiest and best bang for you buck.
Probably the only YT video as of 2021 showing a teardown and how to upgrade the late 2015 iMac. I have an i7 on mine (4ghz) but I would like to replace my proprietary Apple SSD (512gb) to a fast NVMe 2TB. Amazing rebuild, like a surgeon! I have the same IMac 17,1 and want to get on NVME also. Did you have a fusion drive or only HDD originally? I have JUST HDD, but figure the slot for NVME is still in there just empty?

I have mid 2017 27˝. So I have NVMe empty slot? And if I install 1tb NVMe, why would I need internal ssd (I don't need so much data)? Can I use it without or use my exiting 1 tb drive for backup (or even TimeMachine)? Thx a lot, I cant get those infos anywhere around me...

I went for western digital black as I had no issues, some forums suggest issues with some of the Samsung models but many nvme issues were fixed in Mac OS big sur including hibernation issues. I haven’t tested any other drives so can’t say what else out there will work but I would expect most would as nvme is a standard after all

finally got myself the 970 evo, also crucial 1TB to replace the spinning hdd as well, i didn't c u put in the thermal sensor to the crucial drive, did the system's fan kick in at full speed non stop?
No system fan is fine, hasn’t needed that adapter since the fatter iMacs

Wonder if we can use SSD via USB3 port, then no need to open iMac's front glass panel, which is much more difficult to open than the one on older iMac 2008-2011, but not sure if SSD read/write speeds will suffer? Thanks for comments.
Hi, Yes you can use the usb3 socket to run external drives.
@Evlain thank you for this great video! I upgraded last year hdd to ssd 512GB which is bit low with capacity and need to upgrade 1-2tb. Now seeing your video I changed my mind and will just add m.2 SSD. I wanted to ask you if you had any issue with fan when replacing hdd with ssd because everyvhere I read they added thermal sensor to new ssd. I haven't done that and I don't think that my fan is spinning more than before. I thought it would be good time to added it now if needed. Another question is regarding to m.2 ssd. What kind of adapter do I need if I want to add m.2 ssd? Can I clone my existitng ssd to new m.2 and make OS X run from m.2? Thank you for yor advice and your time!
Hi Partrik, it depends on the age of the mac. The first iMac, a 2010, with the slot drive in the side did need the sensor adapter cable. However both this one and my 2019 did not need the sensors adding. If in doubt, don't fix your screen back on until you have tested.
Hi! I am also with a iMac 27 Late 2015 with just 1TB HDD and I am trying to update to SSD SATA III and NVME drive, just like you did Just 2 questions:
1) With SSD (Sata III) + NVME (PCIe conector) do we need to care with that fusion weird thing?
2) I've read an article about the NVME upgrade and the author bought the Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card, for Upgrade 2013-2015 Year Macs(Not Fit Early 2013 MacBook Pro) -> Also on amazon.co.uk. Is there any difference from the one you used? What do you recommend?

Sorry i missed this one! 1. Fusion no, the two drives will just be separate. 2. I cant see any difference in the adapters. do use capton tape to prevent shorting on the metal though.

I have lack of knowledge about computer, and i just want to ask you that can i just add SSD to my imac instead of replace my HDD? i dont know if you understand what i mean, but i just confuse because all the articles's title is "how to change/install SSD" and not "add SSD" haha :D
Rio Satrio you and add an external one but it would be limited to the speed of the USB port, which might not be a problem depending on the age of the Mac
Hi @evlain, hay you had any experience with pcie SSD OWC Auda Pro x2? I bought one without reading the fine print, and apparently it is not supported specifically for iMac 27" late 2015. Read some people installed them anyways but I am not sure to take the risk.
I haven’t I’m afraid. If you find out let people know. Some changes to macOS have improved some compatibility issues. For example hibernation now works for aftermarket drives following the release of big sur

@@dgodiex yes, but as I changed everything at the same time it’s hard to attribute performance to one thing. I’d say disk is still the biggest single gain.
Wow! I did the SSD on mine but at the time I was under the impression the NVME wasn't an option. I ended up being very selective and have the OS running on the 120GB apple nvme. This is very tempting! Curious is 500gb a limit for the nvme size in this configuration?

@@WarriorsPhoto Funny you ask.. I just did it "kinda" I bought the nvme with the intention of doing the upgrade but ended up running it in an external enclosure and so far it's ~450MB read and write which seems fast enough that I don't want to go back into the imac.

Fantastic video. I read in a thread you responded to that, if you would go back and change something that you did that it would be the nvme install. I was wondering if changing the cpu from i5 to i7 would be worth it if you still have the same graphics card? I am thinking about installing a ssd and more ram (32gb). Hi! It’s all about bang for buck. By far the most impressive upgrade is replacing the Hard disk with an SSD. Now that 3rd party NVMEs are supported fully in big sur they are fantastically fast. However the work involved in adding one is quite abit more work, but fairly easy. The gains from cpu replacement are there but the effect would be less noticeable than the other two unless your doing very cpu intensive tasks regularly, it’s also by far the most risky if you’ve seen my 2019 iMac video you’ll know why!

Do you have to create a fusion drive on terminal ,or are you using the nvme m2 as a primary ssd and the ssd like storage .
VW LEGACY no they just appear as two drives. I installed Mac OS on the nvme and use the bigger ssd as storage

I’m good 🙂 hope you are too. Depending on the year model there could be a different cpu models depending what the maximum cpu was. Check what the best model had, and you should be able to upgrade to that. I’ve never tried maybe I will one day!

Hey Evlain, did you try Big Sur? From what I read, seems the new BIOS ROM solves the hibernation problem, and you dont need to change it anymore. Cheers.

Noob question but what’s the purpose of having the SSD in addition to the NVME? How does it work?
They can be faster than even an ssd due to the number of lanes available, however it’s more noticeable when theirs and hdd in the main bay. I have used it to get speed and separate the the OS from the storage

On paper going from i5 to i7 should have been a big jump but the most noticeable changes came from the storage upgrades. I7 definitely ran hotter and kicked the fan in to high gear more often

500gb is not the max, there shouldn't really be a limit unless they get bigger physically, only your budget. Big Sur also fixes hibernate issues, so no need for any pmset modifications

I’ve no experience of either. Find a forum where someone has done it. Not a forum where someone knew someone who’s brothers father uncle had.
Then ask yourself have they done it recently with big sur as lots of issues with nvme, like hibernate, disappeared. If you can find someone, preferably more than one, go with that. Otherwise it’s trial and error for you, although I’m sure someone would buy it off you.
Hey - I did a lot of research but never found an answer... Just wanted to confirm i7-6700 (non-k) IS WORKING. Score are slightly lower than the K in Cinebench and Geekbench, but only 65W, therefore way cooler: 88-90°C in full load (cinebench) with mx4.
Confirmed also Big Sur doesn't require any sleep-fix for the NVMe adapter.
Cool info, good to know as the non-k is more easily found, and cheaper. Big Sur is a great help for people wanting to use aftermarket NVMe drives!

No, you can’t go up in generations normally, as the motherboard needs to support it. So 6700k is max. If in doubt look at what Max cpu Apple put in. Everymac.com has the full listings. One exception I have seen is with 8th and 9th gen intels where you can go from 8500 series i5 to a 9th gen i9 9900 series. And I did a video on that too

I want to do the same to my late 2013 iMac. Would I able to use the same i7 processor or would I have to use a different one? I have seen the i7 4771 as being the go to processor for the 2013 but a 4gig one would be better than the 3.50 4771. Is it possible to use a 2TB SSD? And a 2 TB SSD Sata?
You have balls for doing this at home. I also have seen the ifixit instructions but still the jitters would set in and I'd be scared of making the slightest mistake.
philster611 it’s not for the faint hearted and if you see my latest video on the 2019 I nearly destroyed it! Massive risks! Just be prepared to throw it in a skip or make a flower pot out of it 😂
You’ll need to determine the correct CPU based on the generation of processors that the Mac supports. So the late 2015 takes a 6th generation Intel hence 6700k. Easiest way to find out is to look at what the best processor was that that model could have come with out of the factory. Some support more than one generation the 2019 supports both 8th gen and 9th gen for example hence I could go from i5 8500 to a i9 9900
@@eviain Thanks for the reply. I think I might take it to a professional technician but buy the components first. I really dont trust myself. I know he might charge a bit but the other option is totally screwing up and breaking it permanently. Ill back check on that. I want to run both the 2TB SSD SATA Hard drive and a 2TB SSD card. which should totally max it out to the limit.
Hi mate, do you have the sleep/hibernation issues many do, including me? I have the same late 2015 5k base model (1Tb HDD), bought the adapter and tried a Crucial P1 500Gb nvme stick but am experiencing these dreaded kernel panics if I try sleep. Have attempted the terminal workarounds, but I don't like not having the ability to properly put the machine to sleep. I notice you commented you don't have to have the thermal sensor in this model for a 2.5" ssd, id this without running any fan control app? If so, I may just go that route - remove the nvme and replace the mechanical drive with an ssd. It won't be as fast, but it will run properly. I previously tried running the Crucial stick off an external enclosure via USB 3, but for some reason the read speeds were atrociously bad, like 60 MB/s, and read not much better. Maybe it was the enclosure or cable (USB c to USB 3.1 gen 2), but I doubt it going by the ratings on amazon... Anyway, thanks for the video
Yes I have the issues with hibernate, in the video there is a section toward the end where I disable the Hibernate feature. I just shut the machine down, it boots in seconds anyway!

No issues with fans, that was something that happened on older models with the dvd drive

Not exactly. Your max processor would be the intel i7-4771 the ram would also be different PC3-12800. You could do the ssd and would be a good upgrade . I don’t think it has an NVME slot everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i7-3.5-27-inch-aluminum-late-2013-specs.html

Antonio A. Conde didn’t install 64. I installed 32gb. It’s possible however support is not guaranteed
MacSales (OWC) and Everymac.com claim 64GB RAM is supported if you use 4x16GB modules. Check your model on Everymac to be sure.

@Evlain. I did almost the same upgrade but I used an i7 6700 instead of the 6700k and I noticed the iMac is significantly louder with the i7 than before with the i5. Do you notice the same? with the old i5, I barely hear the fan of the iMac but with the i7 I hear it constantly and some times it's really loud.
Péter Sándor I didn’t notice too much however the processor will run hotter so expect more fan coming in to cool it down
@@eviain thanks for your answer. it's strange because my machine is noticeable louder. What kind of software do you use regularly? I want to use it for web development and when I build bigger applications the fan will automatically start to scream.

Péter Sándor it’s been a while since I have used it. I have done similar to a 2019 i9 and that sounds like it’s going to take off! So the 2015 is quiet by comparison

Hi. Just upgraded my late 2015 with 6700k. 3.3 i5 never exceeded 75°C at full stress when i7 easy getts very quick 99°C and overthrottling. Some saying it’s normal for i7 but wants to confirm with You. I even reopened it again to double check my thermal paste job. I used arctic mx-4. Thanks
I definitely found the fan kicking a lot more with the i7 although I never checked the detail.
@@eviain Thanks. Main was overthrottling realy badly. I found thermal paste under ihs is dryed out so I delided it and changed thermal paste. Glue is actually drying now so we’ll see what happen tomorrow. In worst case I’ll put i5 back. It was 3.3 so not so bad but i7 better anyway.

No, the ssd makes the most difference

I have a graphics card that I'd like to upgrade along with the SSD, but I rather not mess too much per @Evlain 's advice of damage risk, and simply upgrade the SSD. Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 1536 MB is what i currently have.

No, you can’t skip generations unless the motherboard/logicboard supports the processor. The easiest way to find out what the board will take is to look at the highest spec Apple officially sold for that generation of iMac.

I am so confused,
I literally bought a iMac 2015 21,5 for a good price with the goal of putting in more ram and a ssd.
But now when I got it and were looking for parts I find out that it’s not possible 🤷♂️
Apparently the ram on the 2015 21,5 is not possible to upgrade and I am not sure about the ssd either. It’s very split opinions and advise online.
To make the whole thing more confusing I have the a1418 emc 2833 witch is a 4K but I don’t think I have the 4K so I’m not sure if my model is something just in between because the etc number says it’s a 4K.
So I don’t know really what to do, if I can’t upgrade it I will have to sell it and buy a model I can upgrade because 8gb if ram and a SATA drive is just to slow to work on. My MacBook Pro 2011 maxed out is almost faster.
So is it possible to upgrade my iMac or am I better of selling it and getting a 5k that I can actually do something with.?
The smaller iMacs are much less upgradable, personally I’d find a 27”.
My wife has the exact same model. A1418 and EMC 2833 printed on the base, but it's the non-4K model. We've upgraded the HDD to SSD. (Which made a HUUUUUGE difference!) But that's it, I'm afraid. While I didn't check it myself, it says everwhere that CPU and RAM are soldered onto the mainboard.

AmayaThePaintGuy hi ifix it have a step by step guide which I followed. Sintech make the adapter search for m.2 nvme adapter you should find one.
EvIain actually, the adapter is pretty cheap.. $16.99 for the Sintech adapter at Amazon. Works like a champ.

Has anyone tried installing the aura blade from owc into this mac? Would rather avoid blade to nvme adapter.
If you look at the price for performance/capacity the owc seem worse on most fronts. The adapter has never cause me an issue just remember the capton tape, if it’s good enough for the James web space telescope it’s probably ok for a Mac.
@@eviain I ended up going with the OWC just to eliminate one more issue. I made the mistake of bringing it into an Apple certified tech shop. They've had it for 39 days and counting and the unit will still not power on no lights on the motherboard. New power supply has been installed. I fear that they messed up something pretty badly. A repair I should have done myself. Although if I ever do get it back I'm pretty excited to see what kind of speeds it has. Hahaha although your statement is correct. It is very overpriced.

I have the imac late 2015 with an i7 and 32gb ram. My graphics card is AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4 GB, I would like to upgrade that and wonder if you have had any luck getting the system ram past 32gb. Officially Apple says no, but I have seen where people ramped it up to 64gb. I really want to take it apart and clean my internal parts. I work with illustrator and photoshop and need a bit more power when I am doing graphic design.. any ideas? I already have 1gig SSD hard drive. Thanks!
Nice setup, in terms of graphics your maxed out at 4gb. I have also seen some people running 64gb with mixed results, it’s not officially supported. I’m not sure more ram will help unless you’re finding you are using all 32gb currently.

@@Xipri.d.c. the video was probably taken to show the i7 rather than the ram. As you can just put ram in any time from the slots in the back, no need to take the whole computer apart.
can't you just put an NVMe stick to the SATA cable (with an adapter) and essentially just replace the HD with an NVMe drive?
cactuspits you can but it’s pointless as the NVME will be throttled by the SATA speed
cactuspits if ur willing to do a full tear down, the nVME slot is on the back of the logic board. It uses a proprietary 12+16 interface, so you’ll need an adapter. The 2015 27 inch iMacs support PCIe x4, so you’ll get a real speed increase if you go this route. Something to consider...

@@martinluthierking If you do decide to give this a try, I think you'll be amazed at the speed increase - totally worth it. The teardown is a bear. I've done it. Lots of comments on iFixIt forums from guys who've borked their display and are looking at $600 replacement. Total bummer. Do yourself a huge favor - get the little "pizza cutter" tool to cut the adhesive around the display. Avoid the temptation to try to get the glass off using guitar picks and old credit cards. And definitely watch the OWC videos for how to do the teardown. They're hands down the best. Watch them a couple times until you get the idea. Give yourself lots of time and do it when you're rested. Kick the kids, pets, and spouse outta the room when you do it. Then, fire up Blackmagic Disk Speed Test and bask in the glory of a red hot machine... Good luck! J
@@martinluthierking Oh, forgot to mention - the adapter that I've used and can definitely recommend is the Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CWWAENG/). It's not the only one out there, but it gets good reviews and is easy to install. $17 on Amazon.
