  • The flight check will require a Non-precision approach, a Procedure Turn and a maximum performance landing. This approach handles them all. This will be a Localizer Runway 27, Circle to Land on Runway 18R with a maximum performance landing. This video shows you exactly how to set it up, fly the approach and land. Refer to the KMEM Localizer 27 approach plate.

The G-IV is a two pilot airplane and this approach is usually performed at night in the sim. I last performed it in the Flight Safety sim in September, 2023. However, last I heard, it was likely going to be replaced by the ILS 6 circle 1 at TEB.

True. 2 pilot crew and at night. This video was meant to show how to set up and execute the task. Hopefully you’re correct about the ILS 6, circle to 1 in TEB.

What’s the use case for this circle to land, when there is an ILS, LOC, and RNAV approach available for 18R? Someone westbound with an emergency and strong crosswinds from the south? Why not land direct, either on 27 or any of the available 18s?

This is a demonstration of the localizer approach to circle to land for the type check ride. I’ve been flying G4’s for 5 years and have learned that just because an airport has numerous approaches some may be unavailable for whatever reason. You need to be prepared to perform a random localizer with circle to land.

So it’s not necessarily really for a practical real-world example landing at KMEM (because they could just be vectored around to another LOC), but more for another random airport only has one operating LOC or instrument approach, but the wind or shortened runway precludes landing on the same runway as the localizer?
