Using percussion as a song starter is a Phil Collins classic trick ! He used to start with a CR78 drum machin as percussion to create a groove. To did it, he programed loops as a rythmic pattern. Then, based on his drum machin pattern, he composed, an acoustic drums groove to create an all rythm section, and added the melody and harmonic part at last.
When thinking of Pharrell, I’ve always considered him a minimalist. He seems to only use longer sustains on the bridge, or breaks. One perfect example, is “Drop It Like It’s Hot”. When I hear younger track makers throw every sound they in their DAW into one track, I refer them to that Pharrell/Snoop track
I really like how you actually explain the musical ideas, not just making "Pharrell type beat". It's actually extremely important to show young beatmakers how you can use the same techniques for completely different results

Naw man, I saw Chad tell in an interview that usually Pharell has a more or less finished beat when he enters the studio and his job is to make it sound phat
i don't comment a lot, but wanted to give you kudos. the thing i luv about these vids is that you give techniques used by greats while emphasizing that these are concepts that can be used to create your OWN sound. you do a great job of showing how they get a result technically without saying "DO THIS TO SOUND LIKE ____". It's hard for some to separate techniques from someone's art, and you kill it every time. keep up the great work!
Please credit Chad. When they produced as The Neptunes, he's a key part. Mr Me Too is a Neptunes beat not entirely produced by Pharrel as is Busta's What it is.
Your analyses are all kinds of on point. Here are four producers with respective suggestions for deep dives I'd love to hear your perspective on: DJ Premier - You Know My Steez Pete Rock - The Boss Large Professor - Half Time Easy Mo Bee - Machine Gun Funk Peace

Navie you are primed for greatness. Honestly I ain't even an flstudio fan - your content is much more than that. good to see you are promoting it that way more
Thank you so much man, this is very insightful. I've been into making 2000's-ish hip hop lately. Typically in the style of the Neptunes. I was getting sick of starting of with a framework that limits room for creativity (for example: starting of with chords, a melody, overused trap hihat, overused trap snare, a bouncy snare and a spinz 808). The things I've learned from listening to alot of beats produced by the Neptunes for the last 2 days: 1. Use textured drums. 2. Don't be afraid to use percussions in an unconventional way. 3. Chords don't have to be extended throughout the whole song. 4. Same goes for the melody. 5. Sometimes you don't even need chords, but just weird textured sounds on the background to fill up the frequency spectrum. 6. Same goes for the melody. 7. Don't spend alot of time trying to make your instrument sound natural. 8. STOP USING REEVERB ON EVERYTHING. It's what I do inuitively, but alot of melody instruments the Neptunes' use are dry as hell. 9. IT'S OKAY TO LEAVE SPACES. 10. Have fun with it. Experiment, try new things. Enjoy the fact that you don't have to stick to a protocol that leaves little room for innovation, so that your beats don't end up sounding as if they were mass produced in a Metro Boomin' factory.
I’m a new subscriber I love your breakdown of beat making I am currently working on a beat using a sample from killing me softly I love the first part of the song
I used to use FL studio to make some home beats, it's been a long time since I've watched any videos on DAW or producing. I am totally blown by the amount of information you're sharing here. Thank you so much. I just finished like 4 videos from your channel and got to see on your bio that you've been making music for a long time now. It would be great to have a video on how did you start and what kind of DAW do you use. Again, thank you so much for the share. Take care.
I really appreciate your videos for the way it never comes across like you're copying the artist you're focusing on, only taking inspiration. so much more insight than if you were to just do "how to make a Pharrell type beat"
Get the Korg Triton Extreme and Korg MicroKorg Plug-ins, they have 99% of the sounds Pharrell (The Neptunes) used up until around 2010 or so. These are the actual keyboards they used at that time. Even the drums are the same in the Triton.
interesting that Kanye covered a while ago here also uses toms and other percussive elements more melodically sometimes, especially great using the synthier drum machine toms pairing them with Kanye-esque distortion
I really like this approach of tutorials...it’s about studying. I know this isn’t totally the genre you focus on but could we study some flylo? He’s my hero
Ok. My favorite producer is Pharrell. This was a good video breaking down some of his techniques. I hit like on the video. Then you pulled up the Ye vid?! Kanye is my second favorite producer so I had to immediately subscribe. 👍🏽
You have good ideas yourself when you’re giving these examples 💯💯 a lot of these sorta vids give advice then the example beat they make is weak. Keep it up 🔥🔥
Word to big bird, It was your tutorials that got me into using one shots in this manner. Also weird how i heard the similarities almost immediately between that pharrell and Premo track. Dope Video per usual, appreciate you Navie. 💪🏽💯🙏🏽
your videos on music productions ideas are, quite literally, the only music production youtube videos that don't immediately make me vomit. thank you very much for making them!
Kool video but as someone who grew up around Pharrell and Timbaland style sound and era when he said that listen to rump shaker by wreckx n effects that was one of his 1st tracks to go mainstream when he hooked up with chad that’s when the different instruments and off beat melodic sounds came in but that’s just a lil part of it🤔

Pharrel often makes the drums and Chad does the melodics
Yeah I was kinda torn whether to call it a Pharrell video or a Neptunes video
