@Charles13X what matters in this case is not who was the first one doing it, but who was the most representative of the style and definitely dilla is the one
Theres a whole ass book called Dilla Time that explains J's rhythm theory. I highly recommend reading it. Theres a myth that Dilla didn't use quantize or TC (the MPC term for quantize, keep in mind Dilla used the MPC3000 as his main tool) This myth is largely untrue, MPCs have a highly customizable TC interface and you can have entirely different TC settings on each individual drum. Rushing the snares by a 64th note is one of the trademark drum techniques that instantly gives your beat that detroit feeling. The book covers dozens of other techniques in depth
I feel like at tip 3 having a background in drums comes into play because I played the drums in school and thats how I got into beat making. I knew who J dilla was back in 1996 so I was already familiar with his style due to being a huge Slum Village fan but I could always identify with his drum beats because thats how a drummer plays. Very sporadic and erotic. Black Milk who is also from Detroit plays drums the same.
Man my English is not so good so I will try to make it short ...i have been following u since a year ago ..u motivate me a lot and u brought me to old school and as a Indian i couldn't understand oldschool music but u mad me aware of it and now I could produce some sensible beats....thanks a lot Davie i wish us on a project some day...lots of love from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳🪷
Really just flipped that Lost woods flute huh? Idk how I feel about this because I was vibing hard when I first heard it. But you really gave it a whole new sound. Good job!!
Pete Rock & Q-Tip would be dope. One of my favorite producers that I never hear anyone talk about though is Stoupe. Some of those Jedi Mind Tricks joints... man. But Dilla is my #1 so thakn you for this video
The first 2 tips were awesome The second is something I have never done I am veeery interesting in trying in my next beat. Great way to use over used loop and samples and make them feel unique
Great vid! I always love j dilla vids I’d love to see you take a deeper dive into micro chopping and how dilla would use mixing effects on his samples and his drum note nudging
@NavieD your re-creations and your original example beats are always perfect. Nothing over-processed, nothing out of place. You're a master chef, always letting the goodness of each raw ingredient shine through. My ears thank you.
Great video! J dilla’s weird hihats is not really talked about that much when people talk about "dilla drums" so great that someone finally did talk about that. Dilla’s weirdness as a whole is what I find the most inspiring about his productions. Thank you!
Fantastic video, excellent analysis. You have a killer ear, I appreciate you sharing what you can hear. Sadly much of my high end is gone and I struggle to hear hit hats in general. Thanks for the visuals, they help me a ton!
This guy is good. I learned how to produce by listening to music and practicing. These tips are a way of compacting that process and fine tuning certain techniques. Not bad
yo!!! This speaks volumes to me! Thanks so much for this one! I need a lot of help with my lower end. I think this will be a great way for me to focus on that. thanks so much! peace and love from Japan
i love these what we can learn from other producers because not only one producer is ever right music is so subjective and i love it. on that note though i believe you should cover dj dahi
Another great video. Where can one find hip-hop beats that you’ve created? I’ve listen to the albums, but they seem to be more cutting edge, modern stuff than what I’m looking for. The boombap style is one that you’re really good at but I’ve never heard a completed beat from you.
I notice tons of producers have one beat in mind when they refer to a Dilla brat but he, like you've presented, had many different signatures in all his beats
Man what do you do with the beats you make for the videos? They are fire. Please release them or something! I once accidentally figured out the first technique by playing with the EQ. It can work wonders! Navie pls make a statik selektah / apollo brown / marco polo analysis !
Your beat break downs are crazy scary yo. I want my beat remake skills as good as the remakes u do. Ive remade few beats for people and its hard for me at least.
Can you do a video about harry mack specially breaking down some of his flows/rhythms? He was a jazz drummer and he does it all off the dome.... You really should you will get many views his fan base is so big and they will give you a lot of love.... It's a bit different than what you are use to it ..... But I am sure that is something at least you need to take a look, bcuz every person that's into production, rap or any type of genrer of music, they all need to study H-mack.... Even tech N9ne Kendrick Lamar, sway in the morning and more showed love to this guy You got my sub bro ✌️
Wow, I actually did that first one without realizing it! Cut out all the high end, boosted the lower section, and added some effects to make a B section. Let's me know I'm on the right track!!
Nice tips! Thans! One question about your Sample pack: Do yo uhave a list of the content i.e How many and what type ofd drum hits, loops etc? My main interest is in drums, but not sure how the pack is weighted. Thanks :)
Sorry about the annoying scratching sounds in the video! Not sure what happened here...
No probs, any idea of a good sub bass stock plug-in in fl studios? Bass is what I’m struggling with at the mo 😅
@Charles13X what matters in this case is not who was the first one doing it, but who was the most representative of the style and definitely dilla is the one
@Charles13X wow imagine hating on Dilla because he's widely respected
@@Wren_The_Ten you can make it with 3 x osc or GMS but the j dilla kit from lunch77 has moog one shots
my mic does this when i plug directly in thru usb, someone said it maybe needs more power?
Much respect to Jay Dee. He's so influential they got college courses based on his style. It's a shame most new producers never mention him.
But yo tip #1 is crazy. The bass/low end is the foundation to any beat to me. He used the sample to do it
Yeah, it's a cool way to approach your beat
I believe Ski Beatz did the same on "Dead Presidents" @@keejay12
tbh some artists that really know him, don’t mention him out of ego, makes them feel “unique”.
The fact that you are able to get, replicate and explain all those genius artists techniques and habits shows that you are a music genius yourself.
I absolutely love that low end sample idea. I'm most definitely gonna try that today!
Lemme know how it gooooesss
Me too

For anyone wondering the beat at the beginning is "Track 35" of the "Beat CD #3"
that Zelda flips was 🔥🔥🔥

Man, I think He's overshadowed by other commercial producers. Rest in peace Jay Dee 🕊, One of the greatest Pioneer of Hip-hop .
Really just flipped that Lost woods flute huh? Idk how I feel about this because I was vibing hard when I first heard it. But you really gave it a whole new sound. Good job!!
Hahah thanks Ralph
never missing an upload
You da man Daksh
Pete Rock & Q-Tip would be dope. One of my favorite producers that I never hear anyone talk about though is Stoupe. Some of those Jedi Mind Tricks joints... man. But Dilla is my #1 so thakn you for this video
Not sure if I've ever said it before, but you've been a huge blessing in my musical production since I started back in 2019. Thank you brudda!
Your best video yet! Very good observations! Thx
The first 2 tips were awesome
The second is something I have never done I am veeery interesting in trying in my next beat. Great way to use over used loop and samples and make them feel unique
I love that you share knowledge and apply it to examples of your beats to really show how to makes it in our own way in the daw! Thanks
Dilla did it. Nas said it. "It's never what you do but how it's done"
Good shit as always, nice editing on this video too 👌
Great vid! I always love j dilla vids I’d love to see you take a deeper dive into micro chopping and how dilla would use mixing effects on his samples and his drum note nudging
Love your videos and tips pal. Tip 2 is golden.
@NavieD your re-creations and your original example beats are always perfect.

That's dope! I'm going to try that. 👌
Great as always! Inspiring.
This was dope, thanks man.
Nice video I always enjoy them🔥 you should make a dibaise technique video, that would be dope
Great video , thanks a lot
I'm reading "Dilla Time" by Dan Charnas right now. It's a very good read. This video is right on time.
The more I listen to Dilla the more I'm amazed, he was truly one of a kind 🙏
Ur awesome bro! Always someting to learn and good tuto videos ❤
This guy is good. I learned how to produce by listening to music and practicing. These tips are a way of compacting that process and fine tuning certain techniques. Not bad

This is why I watch this channel. Tip one was such a ah ha moment. like the universe just made sense to me. Thank you very much Navie.
R.I.P. Dilla
Dope video!
I learned about the low pass bass from Pete rock
i love these what we can learn from other producers because not only one producer is ever right music is so subjective and i love it. on that note though i believe you should cover dj dahi
Up mi gee give thanks bro bless up yourself everytime bro
Was listening to the 1996 What Up Doe Sessions when you dropped this video yesterday. Dilla was the one.
always pleasure to watch and learn something✌️
Incredible lesson
I appreciated videos like this
Great Video. So detailed and easy understandable. Please spotlight Hit Boy next time. He’s great.
take a shot every time navie says beat lmao. great video!
Tip 2 is a gem. Thanks
Thanks for this!
Can you do a video on Count Bass D?
I Would love a Araabmuzik Spotlight! but Dj.Fresh, Zaytoven or Scott Storch would be dope also :)
Damn! That low end sampling trick really IS Dilla’s sounf
Awesome. Earned a subscriber
Thank you man
😂😂😂Karim... Great video. Love the gems
I can’t wait til you start covering old school Southern Hip Hop Producers. If you want me to name a few I got you.👍🏿💯
Can you make a similar video explaining and analyzing the style of flying lotus? Would love to hear your take on this.
Thank you Jay Dee 🙏
Man the first tip was refreshing
nice video K Benzema !
Dilla was a beast with the beats aaand he was nice on the mic🔥

SUCH A GOOD VIDEO
Take notice is my favorite track off that album

I think Devin The Dude would make for a great video! Your first sample example (lol) reminded me of his stuff. So good! Cheers!
Haha Devin the dude is a name I don't see often nowadays
@@NavieD Prolly wouldn't garner the views it should, eh? lol No doubt.. His sound is one of a kind though!
I would love to see a video on Aesop Rock as a producer. Also, El- P would be cool too
Iv actually been doing the low end thing lately works pretty good
That Take Notice beat is probably J.Dilla's best beat. I can listen to that instrumental all day. Perfect beat to scat freestyles on
Your beat break downs are crazy scary yo. I want my beat remake skills as good as the remakes u do. Ive remade few beats for people and its hard for me at least.
I literally got an idea to try to avoid the sampling process, though I'm gonna try to see if it works.
Would love to see you do Clams Casino next
YESSSS
oh yea!!!
The firts tip is The best
Personally the low end thing was probably the best tip ever. I wish I thought of that years ago.
I aimed at emulating J Dilla in my recent upload, he's the ultimate inspiration!
Yooooo that was a fucking dilla beat you just pulled off. Caught myaelf headbanging to that zelda sample
"That Dilla Swing"💯
Can u do Apollo Brown’s techniques tips
Caught me off guard with that Zelda sample, respect

You got my sub bro ✌️
We need Rza bro! Barely anyone has videos on him and the Wutang type beats on RUclips really don’t match his prime style
Wow, I actually did that first one without realizing it! Cut out all the high end, boosted the lower section, and added some effects to make a B section. Let's me know I'm on the right track!!
That first beat was insane holy big horses
Thanks for this piece bro🫡
LONG LIVE DILLA ❤❤❤❤
Can you do a beat breakdown of that final beat of yours you show
I have a technique that uses the kick as snares and vice versa , then i reverse somewhere halfway through the song.
I’d love to hear some of your music
Is it just me or does it feel like Navie is Benzemas twin😂
Love your vids bro
Can you do one on Pete Rock?
Can you do Nottz next?
Hit boy
Nice tips! Thans!
One question about your Sample pack: Do yo uhave a list of the content i.e How many and what type ofd drum hits, loops etc? My main interest is in drums, but not sure how the pack is weighted. Thanks :)
Thanks for reaching out el-bo! I don't currently have a list on hand, but 87 sounds in the pack are drums
@@NavieD Thanks for the prompt response, and your answer. Very much appreciated.
All the best :)
