- Hooking into big fish while there's money on the line will make you nervous! But the bite was on fire and knowing the podium could be one cast away I wasn't going to let nerves stop me from having a crack at the Bounty Hunters prize money!

Great vid Matt, seems like you were on a beaut of a spot... A little trick we learnt out at the Barrier when being hounded by smaller fish on the drop was to try shake off the smaller fish if it grabbed the lure (sometimes crush your barb) as the bigger fish would grab the lure after it was dropped, you could see them on the sounder following up the smaller fish. Keep them coming :)
cheers Andy, will keep that tip in mind for next time. I definitely think the larger softbait i had at the start was helping, of course i ran out of my 7 inch by 11AM
Been waiting all week for this Matt. As I stated man big things in your future with this quality work. Almost makes me want to move back to the North Island. You should come down south and try the colder waters come time.

Yea it's a bit of a shame but your only allowed to enter 1 fish per day, so it's up to the angler to limit their catch

I do a bit of spear fishing and porae are a pretty easy fish to get. They are a good eating fish. I think they taste a bit like shaper. 23:01
yea I've heard that they're like a dopey snapper when spearfishing. I've eaten Porae in the past and didn't like it all that much, maybe i just prepared it wrong
far out u worked super hard in this comp! the trev's tail beat is so distinctive as. a shame that poare didn't count in the comp cause that was pretty big

Do you ever fish for species other than snapper or kingfish?
not really mate, lol. we're pretty limited on species here in NZ. especially from the kayak its hard to get far enough offshore to tap into any gamefish
