    Excellent video - details about different GT regs are quite sparse online, so this is very useful indeed. It’s a shame that there’s so much confusion surrounding GT classes compared to LMPs, since I personally think that they’re substantially more appealing to the average viewer. As GTE/LM begins to die, I hope a more understandable hierarchy gets established in the future.

      In my opinion GT3 is an extremely boring class and shouldn’t be drawn into anything.
      The German DTM got completely screwed up now it’s only another GT3 race.
      The 90s DTM was peak performance, but after that it at least was it’s own class with it’s own cars.
      Group C and GT1 was absolutely amazing in my opinion. Those cars where such great examples of excellent engineering, it’s a huge shame there’s nothing like this anymore.
      Racecars that have to have a few legendary roadgoing equivalents!
      Those where the days!

    • @theocousins6386
      @theocousins6386 Год назад +8

      @@rolux4853 The reason that all of the regulation sets that you mentioned are no longer around (Old DTM Class 1, modern Class 1 within DTM (Super GT GT500 still uses it), Group C, and both versions of GT1) is the same - cost. Yes, they were amazing in terms of the cars that got produced for them and the engineering that went into them, but it was so expensive for manufacturers to perpetuate those arms races that in all of those cases, they gave up because either 1 team had a clear advantage over the rest that couldn’t be caught up to, or everyone ran out of money around the same time.
      GT3 and Hypercar/GTP (LMH/LMDh) are incredibly popular regulation sets precisely because elements like BoP and the LMDh spending cap mean that teams can guarantee that they can make a competitive car that won’t break the bank. It may seem boring to those who grew up with the monsters of the past, but if it works and keeps motorsport out of the boom-bust cycles of the past, then I say all the more power to them!

      Unfortunately, DTM lost all its charm when they started to build cars that have no correlation with their homologated counterpart. The chassis is built from scratch, the engine is different. There was a time where Alfa, BMW and Mercedes built those racecars from the Homologated Chassis and engines. The race used to be animated, full of soul and power. Now it has lost a bit of charm.

In a sea of upspeak and "youtube guy voice", you stand out with tone variation and great modulation. Also, your writing is similar to Top Gear, especially the "GT1 no longer exists and is irrelevant... so we're off to a good start." I could hear Jeremy Clarkson saying it during one of his segments. ACO and IMSA having their own brand of GT classes go boom and then bust just proved Stephane Ratel right and those two governing bodies need to apologise to him, as well as work with him to establish a universally accepted hierarchy. now my head hurts
    but thank you for the clarification

    The GT500 cars remind me a lot of the American SCCA Trans Am series' TA and TA2 spec cars. Those are also silhouette cars, but they're based on muscle cars and have Chevrolet LS V8 engines. I believe they're mother chassis cars. The series started with race-spec road going muscle cars on road courses, but now they're far different of course.

      GT500 doesn't use the Mother Chassis, only the GT300 class do. Besides, whereas the MC cars use an unbranded Nissan V8, GT500 mandates only turbo 4-pots made by the manufacturers of the participating cars.

      Trans-Am doesn't use production engines, they use old spec NASCAR engines.
      The Mother Chassis is bespoke for Super GT, although Trans-Am would probably try to fit you into a class if you built a car around one. Trans-Am has it's own bespoke chassis, with different rules between TA1 and TA2.

    Very detailed video 👍 couple of things though:
    Porsche recently said that their 911 RSR 19 has won its last ever Le Mans 24hrs so that must mean that for some reason they’re deciding not to take part in the final year of GTE? (2023) maybe it’s because their attention will be turned to their LMDH
    Also I would love if you could do a similar video to this but covering things like Group C, LMP1, LMP2 and DPi cars (basically the top level of endurance racing) and what has come before an after these classes. 😁

    Not mentioned in here, but GT2 was also the name of the class that competed alongside the original GT1, before becoming GTS and then GT1 MK 2. The original GT3 category became GT in Le Mans-style series before becoming GT2 MK 2, then GTE/GTLM.

    If it were up to me i'd scrap all GT classes apart from GT4 GT3 and a revised GT2 where the cars are actually faster than GT3. I would also restrict GT4 to using road type semi slicks only so that they powerslide a bit more. Drivers would rise from GT4 to GT2 the same way formula works.

    Whooa no wonder.., for this whole time i thought the smaller the number the higher the tier (well it used to be but not now hahah). So it's more less like a rally group. Group A isn't necessarily higher tier than group B, then group N and bla bla. Thx for the elaboration!!

    • @triplecrownracing
      @triplecrownracing  2 года назад +1

      I mean, generally speaking, it was lower the number the higher the tier up until GT2 was reintroduced. GT500 was kind of its own class. Yeah, this whole thing got really confusing. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of classes just get slashed eventually and we end up with an easier to understand hierarchy. But until that day comes, here ya go. Thanks for tuning in!

    Can you make a video explaining ALL the different GT3 series, I’m confused about GT World challenge vs DTM vs GTD/Pro vs GT3LM ETC.
    Can a driver only race in one series at a time or can he/she race in 2 or more a year.

    Thanks for the video, but wouldn't mind seeing a visual of the gt branches.
    Like an evolution chart with lines going everywhere it branches off.
    Also saying it's a few seconds shorter doesn't really say much to me perhaps saying some top speeds of the different categories would have been helpful

    • @triplecrownracing
      @triplecrownracing  2 года назад +3

      I'm glad you enjoyed it. I should explain that most publications will use lap times when pointing out the differences in performance between these classes as top speed is quite often meaningless in circuit racing. Lap time is therefore the best speed indicator. It should also be noted that even GT cars in the same class have different top speeds which will also most likely vary due to balance of performance. Anyway, I hope this video was helpful. Thanks for tuning in!

    To clarify for those who don't know:-
    GT means Grand Tourer, a category of luxury brand performance sports cars built for racing while also being street legal.
    From my perspective, the reason why auto manufacturers and amateur teams attend racing events is because - it is one big advertisement of their products; a demonstration of engineering and performance ; basically saying---, "look how good our car technology is, buy from us."
    I've grown up watching different motorsports from the early 2000s and played many racing video games. So I have some understanding.

    GT1 - basically dead

    GT3 - professional stuff with aero
    GT4 - spiritual successor to GT1

    I just have one question. In racing do all cars have relatively the same performance or can some be over tuned?
