I started getting interested in IMSA when the guy next door gave us tickets to the L.A. Times G.P. at Riverside International Raceway in 1983. I've been involved as a volunteer with Cal Club and other SCCA Regions working at IMSA races at Riverside, Long Beach, Del Mar, Laguna Seca, and Daytona. I was a track side witness to some of the most awesome GTP and GT cars ever to race in the USA for 40 years.

Thanks for the explanation. I got into IMSA because my son likes Lamborghinis so we bought tickets 2 years ago just to see them race. The fact that the pits were accessible and the pit road walk before the big races got me hooked on the whole organization. It’s a confusing set up but such a great weekend. Next time you are at Watkins Glen I’d like to shake your hand and buy you a beer. Keep up the great content.

Ya know OTE, some historical videos would be great after seeing you do this. There were parts of the 1990s that I really liked. The Nissan 300Zx GT car that won Daytona overall was the first car I feel in love with. But that was followed by my loving of the Panoz GTR1 and Porsche GT1 later that decade. Then we had the Corvette C5R and Dodge Viper right after!!
ALMS was mixed for me to be honest. I really did not start enjoying it until the GTLM category took shape after 2010. Granted I know a lot liked the LMP cars in 2008. I could not stand Grand Am. I did like the Corvette DP though. And honestly the Daytona 24 was a non existent race between 2004 through 2013. Not even on my radar as a racing fan until 2014 merger year. For me it was as if the Daytona 24 died after 2003, did not exist for a decade, before it was resurrected in 2014.

Depends on if you're in the US or elsewhere! In the US you need Peacock, outside it then you get it free on IMSA.TV! I did a quick video on it ruclips.net/video/k4Wz2LIbM5M/видео.html

Dude I’ve been attending IMSA races since 2011 I think. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard it was on the rise. The race came to the nations capitol. Then never did again. It came to Baltimore MD then never came back. Then it merged with another racing body. Peugeot pulled out. Years later Audi and Porsche pulled out of P1. Then it was only Toyota. Toyota was given trophies to race against cars in Lowe classes. Basically Toyo ta raced against no competitors and was just handed trophies like a heavy weight boxer going against a featherweight boxer. And a Toyota was all happy because they won Lemans. Racing against basically no one because all the major competition pulled out because of the money to keep teams going. So when you say it’s on the rise again. It’s always on the rise. I’ve heard it all before.

Are you sure you’ve been attending IMSA races ? because what you’re describing about Toyota winning against the lower classes is the WEC

I'll say it again then, IMSA is on the rise haha. The increase in entries as well as fan interest the past couple of years is clear and indisputable. Sportscar racing has very clear ups and downs, the fall of GTLM could be argued as a down period. The introduction of the LMDh regulations was definitely the start of an up period though and we're definitely living in that period of growth right now!

Why not call them LMDH and GT3?

Won't exactly work that way considering that Aston Martin (from 2025 onwards) will be the first manufacturer to race in IMSA GTP using the LMH regulations.

The GTP name is a nod to top class that ran in the 80's and early 90's. Plus as was already pointed out this doesn't cause confusion when an LMH car runs in the class! As for GTD it's been the class name since the merger and they adopted the GT3 regulations for the class a number of years ago

The safety car procedure is the WORST part of the series by far. Especially in endurance races. It makes the race not really endurance anymore. Just a 23 hour parade and a mad dash at the final hour. Or maybe 5 minutes if there are safety cars there. I suggest Code 60/FCY for debris and stalled car situations to avoid artificially bunching the field again. Only use full safety car periods for crashes and bad weather. I think it is good to see the gaps and fuel strategies play out over a minute by minute, hour by hour time frame. That is part of the story. Safety after Safety car ends that. That is why the Nurburgring 24 is my favorite endurance race now. They don't have that there.

Some of the best racing is after the safety car goes in though with the field bunched up for the green flag, kind of imsa charm especially in sprint races code 60 would take that away however will agree the yellow periods are too long though

@@robertbearden785 A sprint race in sportscar racing in my mind is the 1 hour races you see at GT World Challenge Sprint series and DTM. I think there is value to spend an hour in a race to build up that 30 second lead over the competitor. Only for the safety car wipe it away due to a small piece of debris falling to the track or a car stalling out...which sometimes restarts on its own after they threw the caution for that stalled car.

DP cars were a joke... They were beaten by GTS cars on performance a number of times, so Grand-Am said no more GTS cars.

They got beaten in 1 race which was the 2003 Daytona 24 which also happened to be the first race for the DP cars granted the DP cars werent that much faster but also had so many mechanical failures being the first race the cars were run.
