Led Zeppelin - Robert Plant - Whole Lotta Love - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Tutorial
One of the things that is so cool about listening to these isolated vocal tracks is we end up hearing stuff we would have never heard before.
As we've done various songs in this series have any of you picked up on things that you didn't even know were in the song before?
In this recording from "Whole Lotta Love", I'm going to debunk the illusion that Robert Plant is singing super heavy on the track and instead we'll see how gentle he actually is singing.
I'm going to teach you how you can get really small on the sound just as he does and how we can build up to the song note by note, until you can sing it yourself.
Here is the version I did of the song:
    • Led Zeppelin - Whole L...
And also check out these other Led Zeppelin tunes I've done:
    • Led Zeppelin - Immigra...
    • Led Zeppelin - Kashmir...
    • Ramble On | Led Zeppel...
    • Going To California | ...
    • Led Zeppelin - Since I...

i listened Plant in a concert few years ago, i mean the dude still got it, he didnt sing like extremely high, but his tone, his pitch, his emotion and everything that actually makes him a great singer was still there, and his voice was still lovely to hear.

I have to say I really have adjusted to Robert Plants worksclear up to Carry Fire. The man is so humble in his interviews. I'm waiting for another album to come out, and I'll pay $2,000 to see him live. I hope I get that chance. He has unique vocals, and phrasing, improvising, and showmanship. He sounded great all the way through your video for the style of those days.

Wow! Cool channel Mr Tamplin. 😊 Rarely watch vocal coaches channels but this one is a class of its own :) didn't grow up with Led Zeppelin and only know 1 or 2 of their songs but the singer has a great unique voice. I like it! 🙂 Love your breakdown on what the singers actually doing with their voice. May I suggest another legendary singer whose vocals i think you will enjoy analyzing - Righteous Brothers Bobby Hatfield especially his 1965 live version of the classic ' Summertime' or Unchained Melody live also 1965. Cheers and thank you :)

  • @zendweller1

Haha, that was VERY interesting, Ken! I think you're en pointe with this one, too! Robert Plant is definitely one of my favourite vocalists, and of course Led Zeppelin is right at the top of my most-loved classic rock bands list. But to hear it from this perspective....wow. Your observations really made me notice how quiet and almost low-vibe the first part of the song was. It was a huge difference from the high vibe of the last part (high on what? I think you're right on this one too - they never hid their drug usage...it was considered "cool"). This shows me three things: how amazing the sound engineers were in those days; how epic the rest of the band was; and how "human" Robert was, despite his iconic voice and reputation!

Love this video series!! Thank you sir.
It’s giving me so much new appreciation for songs I’ve heard (and tried to sing) a million times.
One thing that really has got me thinking is how much of these little quirks that make these iconic songs ...iconic... were planned, and how much of it is it just in the magic when the music gels organically.
This vid made me think about the structure of the song. Starts balls to the wall. The break..the anticipation, the build up. And the release (I mean come on we know what this song is about...he’s ejaculating those wails at the end) ...I wonder if it was planned to do a new take when Robert was “fresh” and push that energy into the final release, or if he just thought “ehhh, needs more spunk” 😂
Anyhow thank you for the vids ken. I love your channel. Keep up the fine work! 💛

This same phenomenon of recording energy, different mic/day, etc. happens in Adele's 'Skyfall.' Check out how different verse two ("Skyfall is where we start") sounds from what's before it. Sad thing is they stole music from artists infact they and others I should say stole music from blues artist most really old and recieved no recognition nor money except for Etta Jame with I rather go blind thanks to Rod Stewart! Led Zeppelin had been taken to court for the royalties do to some of the blues artists . Jimi Page admits in a autobiography that Robert was suppose to change the words a bit in the songs as they changed the music and he laughs and adds however, Robert forgot to change them and that was that we ended up in court . The video is here on RUclips its interesting here are all these people rocking out to what they thought were unreal rock tunes and all along they had been old I do mean old blues tunes ! Hey Ken, you gotta remember this song is about sex! Those sounds and screams he makes and lines like "give it to me baby" are there for a reason! (I don't think it's necessarily just drugs doing their thing) Really liking your isolated vocal analysis you've been doing!

Led Zeppelin toured from 1968 thru 1973 straight. It was late 1972 where Roberts voice begin to show strain. You can here it in the Japan shows. Parts of America 1973 were strong but things were changing live for the band and chemicals were very evident.
They toured again in 1975 America and Robert was terrible as far as range. He has a good enough voice to sing at a lower range and still sound good but the power was gone. He was very sick during the tour.
1977- Robert adapted more of a Roger Daltrey type with lower range but he got his strength back. Forget the falsetto or head voice he was all from the throat and strong. He got very nasally in the acoustic stuff but over all he recovered quite well from 1975.
1979 they did 4 shows and he was adapting with age again a bit nasally.
1980 there weren’t enough shows for him to adapt or get comfortable however he was in fine form.
In 1970-1971 he was never better. Chilling at times, some recordings I have are incredible. He really pushed it ..maybe too much.

Really love your analysis and tutorials. It would be great if you you could do an Elvis Presley isolated vocal analysis. There is a song called "It Hurts Me" from 1964, it has always been one of my favorites, or perhaps "In The Ghetto" or "Bridge Over Troubled Water". That said, whatever you are able to can come up with would be great. Cheers!

As always this was great! I have no clue how many times I've heard this song in my 65 years, but I will say there are some words/sounds I'd swear I never heard that you have in the isolated track. As if I was hearing what I wanted to hear instead of what was there. I wonder if he made part of it in the beginning a tiny bit softer so the bold ending would be heard as more bold to the listener.

@Ken Tamplin (re: 12:50-12:54) The "unmentionable" ... Plant is my favorite all-time singer, but yeah... cocaine had as much if not the most impact on the degradation of his voice (which one could argue actually begins around '71 when you can hear his voice beginning to "thin out", as well as the ceaseless (and unnecessary) belting and distortion. That being said, there's a youtube clip from a radio interview in 1988 where Plant finally admits to cocaine use specifically and that his final use of the drug occurred in 1977.

Not sure why anyone would be shocked by drug use, by a musician, in the 70s...

@@kentamplin referring more to what isn’t mentioned (as in the specific substance) when people speculate upon why he, “lost his voice”. Stevie Nicks and even Elton John made it work for them, even David Bowie seemed to be able to adjust to the effects (and I would argue recovered much of his voice by the late 90s)... Whitney Huston, not so much. Of course she was still an active on and off again user.

Idk Ken, seriously, it sounds pretty epic to me when Robert did it. He probably gassed himself out doing retakes trying to get it perfect. Ik Jimmy's a perfectionist & by th way Robert oversingss live, I bet he wore himself out & had2 finish next day. Oh Ken, hav u seen Nightwish do th Pink Floyd cover ' High Hopes'?? Only Marco sings, & it may b th most epic cover ever! Even David Gilmour was impressed. Thought u might enjoy it
