The image of his psychotic smile with his yellow eyes is one of the most terrifying images of Batman I’ve ever seen. He literally looks like The Joker.
And the Joker was quick to figure that out--that Batman is the same as him, but on the opposite end of the spectrum. The Joker embraced his insanity and became the embodiment of it. Batman fights to avoid crossing that line every day of his life. The joke is that Bruce is not Batman's real identity. Batman is. Batman is just pretending to be Bruce.
Well it’s not entirely what happened. After Bane broke Bruce Wayne’s back, Azrael took up the mantle as Batman. While Bruce was undergoing rehab, Azrael had grown fond to this newfound role. Disagreeing with Azrael’s methods and him tainting the symbolism of Batman, Bruce challenged Azrael for the title, but ultimately fails. After defeat, Bruce is forever locked at the top of Gotham bell tower, forced to watch as his city changes in the image of Azrael. Once every year on Bruce’s birthday, Azrael himself visits the original dark knight, only to taunt him.
Azrael is a w because he actually killed the villains instead of letting those mfs live after having f**ng military weapons and committing war crimes while Batman lets them live so they can kill more people
Four years shy of thirty years of non-stop, constant chronic pain (which I do acknowledge is different than torture, but BOY somedays I can’t tell the difference with how horrific the pain can be and how much it debilitates me. There’s a reason most chronic pain patients likewise suffer from some type of depression or make attempts on their lives.
Still a way more interesting of turning Batman into evil than Batman Who Laugh. The whole Joker toxin turning people crazy thing just feels lame and just feels like a plot device whenever you want someone turn evil in DC. It felt like a lame plot device in Arkham Knight, and it felt the same way to the Batman Who Laughs.
It makes more sense when you realize that the Dark Multiverse is basically an absurdist hellscape based on nightmares, so things don't necessarily need to make sense for them to happen and the worlds in the Dark Multiverse always fall apart due to internal inconsistencies caused by whatever anomaly forms the foundation of their existence; a series of stray thoughts brings the universe in question into existence based on a particular concept like 'What if Batman became the Joker?', then it falls apart because the collective unconscious forgot to actually give the world a proper history or future to support it. In other words, The Batman Who Laughs is a nightmare from a doomed theoretical universe brought into the mainstream continuity where instead of being a stray thought doomed to die he's now a flesh and blood entity capable of screwing with the cosmic order through the shared ingenuity of Batman and the Joker. And in defense of the concept of The Batman Who Laughs, the Joker Venom he was exposed to was a concentrated version found in the body of that universe's Joker, meant to act as a 'Last Laugh' where the concentrated Joker Venom would either kill the Joker's assailant or drive them insane. It was just a happy coincidence that this only happened when The Batman Who Laughs killed his own Joker and caused the absolute worst-case scenario his reality was built upon.
In Arkham Knight, it was more used for Bruce to fight his inner self after Joker died, than "an evil Batman". Eventually, he did overcome his darkest thoughts, his past mistakes and his fear. Until Suicide Squad KTJL ruined that and made him evil anyway. Undermining the entire development of Bruce. Because of brainwashing or something. Now that's lazy writing.
