- We grab this footage "From the Archives" and step back in time 20+ years ago to the 2001 Hot Import Nights (HIN) held at the McCormick Place in Chicago, IL. This circuit was my favorite back then as far as Import type shows went because it combined two things that I loved at that time: cars and a nightclub setting.
This show was held 8 days after the first Fast & Furious movie was released and it was very popular given that movie sorta showed what the Import scene was back then in a sensational and laughable way. Some will cringe and others will remember fondly back to those days depending on if you were around in that time or what you were into. As you can see, tacky fiberglass body kits, vinyl graphics, and headlight/taillight swaps (regardless of how well it actually flowed with the lines of the car) were all the rage. Lucikly not all succumbed to the popularity of such things deemed rice although you may not see a lot not affected by it in this video. Like with many things, styling, and what is popular in different car cultures change over time.
This is the first show I had a camcorder not from the 1980s to film with. I had upgraded to a JVC GR-DVL310OU MiniDV camcorder which was much smaller thankfully. The stills were taken with an old Kodak DC280 2.0Mp camera which was good tech for that time. Just temper your expectations, this is old footage and it is not nearly as crisp and clear as video filmed today. Back then I also just filmed things haphazardly because I didn't know any better nor did I ever have any intention of anyone other than myself and friends of seeing any of the footage.
So relax and enjoy the little look back to this facet of the car scene back in 2001.

Cars looked so cool back then
I remember going to HIN, Survival Series, Import vs Domestic, Summer Slam etc. Car shows hit differently back then. Sunday night BestBuy meet ups use to be crazy too. Those days are long gone.
I definitely miss that era of shows for sure. It is not the same these days to me either (for Import shows at least)

It was a fun time for sure. Maybe some questionable styling choices for vehicles but that was the trend back then. Nothing really beats the vibe of those shows back then. I don't know that I really see it in shows these days. Just having a car show mashed with a club type atmosphere was really fun for me, at least back in those days.
