    I opted for method one...used 3M electricians tape though...may the Pinball Wizard have mercy on my soul!

    For the solder splice you want to hold the heat over the solder until you see it melt into the wire. A U-shaped deflector on the end of the heat gun will spread the heat around the whole splice. Another tip is to hold the splice in place with paper tape. This holds the splice in place and protects the wire insulation from melting. Remove the tape after the repair.
