Outhouse Door - Adding a little privacy

- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- Slowly getting back into the swing of things Cody tackles a quick project to build a door for our outhouse. We have been using a tarp since building the outhouse last year as the door was never a huge priority to get done.
This was a great project that did not take too much energy or time to accomplish. The list of small projects is long, and slowly as time allows we hope to check many off over this coming summer.

For those concerned about Rowan being too cold. We understand the concern, but we are not being careless when it comes to her well being. She was outside maybe 5 minutes for Lori to look at the finished product. If she was cold she would have cried.
It is not a real concern until temperatures get close to freezing and we were in the mid to upper 40s with no wind. We were not concerned being we are used to the cold climates.
Looking at it from the other side. I wouldn't think to bring Rowan outside once it hit 80 because at that point I am far too hot to do anything. In reality though it is perfectly fine to have a baby outside at 90 for short durations and I am sure many from warmer climates wouldn't think twice about it.
You are doing fine ! Don't let them get to you all. Some of them do not know decorum. Love that baby and you
Adults maybee used to cold climates but babies cannot regulate their temperature till 9 months at the earliest.
I'm sure you were taught at hospital that indoors now it's recommended no hat or socks inside. So I'm guessing that's why baby didn't have those on, and it was a quick run outside.
The American Acadamy of Pediatricians recommendations are online also for further reading.
Also hypothermia also happens in over 40 degree weather.
True. That baby is used to that weather. We live in the south and my daughter has her baby during the summer. They would keep their air at 68-70 degrees and her baby would be in a onesie. I was always freezing when I visited. The baby was fine. I told her he was going to have a hard time being outside in the heat and humidity when he was a little older because he is so used to the cold temperature.
We all make mistakes as new parents so don't judge...AND we don't need to be nasty either! You two are doing great, for one, you spoke up and addressed the comments and assured your daughter is fine (it wasn't hard to see she is well loved and taken care of). Don't let this situation deterre you from making these videos ❤
Rowan is still so tiny. Sorry for caring too much. I know she will be ok. You are both great parents, just learning a lot. Many blessings your way.
FYI you can put that eyebolt in the chuck of your drill makes it a little easier
Looks rustic. Cody did good.
Great job on the out house 😊
Cody you can build anything and not only does it look great but is so functional as well.. Love the door handle, so Alaska and so nature inspired …( she is your baby dress and raise her your way 😘)
Much needed upgrade. You can even hang your hat on the handle so others will know it is occupied when being used. Can't wait to see the next upgrade on video; Heated Seats! Whoo! Hoo!
The door turned out great👏👏👏👏👏
You gave a whole new meaning for "Sh*tting in the woods. Literally.
Baby Needs waRm clothes like mom & dad❤
Please stop calling her the kid. Please!
47 years ago, I was a first time mom and would refer to my daughter as “the kid”. One of my co-workers said, “the kid? the kid? She’s not a goat! call her by her name or say baby, or your daughter!” So, yes, I quit calling her the kid.
You should bundle the baby up when being outside what is wrong with you guys thinking that a baby will cry if it’s cold seriously!
I enjoy seeing your ingenuity
Sometimes winging it is better than a plan
The baby's feet and head are bare, with only a thin garment covering them. Please dress the baby in socks, a hat, and a thick garment when going outside. I know it's your child, but I couldn't help myself.
Most Karen’s can’t help themselves. Not your child, not your say.
She is not a Karen.they put their lives out there, and as a mother, you know to always put a hat on baby head and socks on their feet.especially when they are that young.i live in warm climate and young babies always have hats and socks on.its just a mothers instinct to mention it.i am sure her mom or grandmother would say the same.
Arms too. That’s what caught my attention! Yikes.
@@missymunro9071 Geez, it just takes a few seconds to throw a small blanket over the baby. The baby has bare feet and arms. Common sense.
Wonderful door and baby approved.
Might use a rechargeable motion light for the winter nights. We use one for our closet it’s a led
Great job 😀hi from Colorado Springs 😀
Baby heat lost through the head is really high so a hat should be worn at all times. As a rule of thumb if momma has two layers of clothing on baby should have three❤
That is how I was taught ! They don’t keep their heat well.. 😮
Yup that's what's taught over my way also. Babies can't regulate their temperature till later
Mother even has her hands covered and protected from the cold. What a sad life for "the kid".
Agree also
What's the temp. out there.? no cap for the babe.Maybe it's just me,it doesn't snow where I live.
Guys, the baby!!!! Put clothes on the child. You're dressed! Sheesh!
That is one nice lookn outhouse!!!! Cody ur so talented....never dissapoint n all ur projects!!! Lori is pretty amazing too!!! 💜🕯😊
You can get a motion LED light with solar for inside the outhouse.
Looks pretty good 😊.. but oh my.. wrap a blanket around your little one 😊❤... so precious ❤,, sorry.. didn't mean to tell you what to do... 😮😊, Thank you for sharing this with us 🎉
Franchement je ne comprends pas qu’on puisse avoir des WC aussi déplorable😮 😢 vous pourriez les améliorer en en bouchant tout les trous et isoler l’intérieur et pour la lumière il existe des lampes solaires
Lori, wrap the baby up. That door is a necessity for guests. Are you planning on a future bath house?
Looks like it fits the door frame. Are you having go I d weather up there. I heard you got alot of snow this winter.
Please wrap the baby girl up!!
I love the O.H. and the door!! Nice job 👍🏻
I am watching to see what you did or didn’t do with your bundle of joy!!😂😂😂😂😂 If she gets frost bit , the child people will come knocking !! Ijs .. Be careful .. and it is fun watching your two amazing people that have talent !! Woah 😳
And if an agency has a concern, education is done.
Nobody comes to pluck your baby away over a hat.
She's a new mom and I'm sure her Healthcare team is doing parent education with her.
The parents are dressed better than the child for the cold
Don’t you think the baby warm enough ?
Do you think you are smart enough ? Cause from here you are a stewpadas
Great job!! Your so talented Cody.
I know it’s your child but please please put a hat and blanket on your baby
I was thinking the same thing. I'll be wearing in a beanie in the house and the temp.be in the 60s.
It's okay if that tiny baby is cold as long as she is cute. Are you kidding. I can't believe the cruelty of tiny baby with no blanket but it's okay because the parents are nicely bundled up.
You don't know what temp it is....just because there is snow and she is cuddled up next to mom.
🤦🏻♀️
No socks either. How terrible.
Do you think you will ever install an inside bathroom ?
They don’t have a well or septic system yet.
Man now that you have a place established there with a cabin you can sell for idk 1.5 million the prices up there are crazy .. 30 acres wooded 20k 5 acres with a shake 450k
She has a sweatshirt and he has a jacket both with clothes underneath but the baby is in a short sleeve onesie, bare foot and no hat plus there is snow on the ground??? Does no one see anything wrong with that picture?
Beautiful door and love the handle.
Sometimes newborns want a cozy snuggle spot to sleep more like the womb. Maybe a small box with cushion inside the crib to give her security.
Great job on the door.. I like it! Lori, you're bouncing back wonderfully after giving birth.. you look great! Pay no mind to the naysayers here.. you know your baby. If she was too cold, she would've cried but she appeared quite content snuggled up to you. Don't let their negativity get to you. You do you!
Just know i know what a dry cold is... At 70 degrees its hot there. Even with snow on the ground. some moon shaped slits in the out house will let light in. Thats what they did back in the day. Good work!! Baby does need socks on to keep colic away, you dont want her to get colic. Drafts can cause it...❤ I have to tell this to my grands so i know you didnt know it.(Just a little wisdom from me.)
Nothing like a wind breaker for your but.😂😂
Oh WOW Rowan has grown so much. She doesn’t like the crib? Maybe wrap her up like a babushka doll in the crib when she sleeps so she doesn’t move around much. Movements may allow cold in. 🥰
AMEN to what Cody said! The only thing I would add is to be careful with Rowan breathing in the cold air without a lightweight blanket across her nose and mouth - and no I don’t mean smothering her! Drs have always said that anise can breathe better in cool surroundings tan warm. A couple that can build their home will use good judgement in raising their children. And the door looks great!
Are you not aware how easy it is for your viewers to report what we see regarding your child
Are you not aware that you have the ability to stay out of other people’s business? She’s a new mother and doesn’t need threats like this Karen. Are you also aware that other cultures, especially in cold dry climates, put their babies outside to sleep? Look up the Scandinavian sleeping method. I doubt Lori had Rowan out there very long . Instead of threatening them - how about just offering up some positive advice and move on with your day.
lol, Alaska CPS would laugh their arse off getting a report about taking infant outside without a hat in 40F for five minutes. It should have had a blanket, yes but to report them? lol GTFOH with nonsense.
Hope you've invested in a composting toilet at least until you can get the well drilled and a septic tank installed. Life will be different with the kid onboard. Creature comforts are going to take precident over the old ways. Maybe a heater in the outhouse, some sort of camp wood burner will suffice for the short term. It's not too early to begin planning the upcoming season's projects. You will more than likely want a workshop enclosed to perform work when cabin fever strikes again (and it will). Even a small ediface would get your tools and you inside during foul weather (and a small camp heater in there too would be nice). I know it feels like you are going in a thousand directions at once and so is your wife, especially now with the baby. Some place to separate out during the winter months might prove to be good for your marriage as well. I'm sure you're both mellow folks but everyone has liimits. Prioritize what to do next and so on. Keep sane and healthy.
Why would you take a baby outside with no clothes on with snow on the ground and your bundled up? Wow!
You should learn to spell before criticizing these parents.
Nice job on the door! Looks like that little sweetie has a lot of hair. Thanks for sharing.
You need to clean up inside I don’t understand how you can live in a mess
OH MY HEAVENS!!! THE NERVE OF YOU! You sound like some prissy, deep-south, DAR debutante who grew up with a a maid, a nanny, and a silver spoon inserted a bit too deep.🤷♀️ You have NO CONCEPT of their lives and the absolute miraculous feats they pulled off last year. Why don't you just apologize, tell them GREAT JOB, and move on?!
Thanks, looking good . ✌🏻👊🏼
NEXT Season on "Remote Life Alaska": Cody takes his detail and expertise with a chainsaw to a whole new level; Introducing "One-of-a-kind Alaskan Birch Door Handles!!!" (Only half-kidding😉)
Hey friends no advice but a reminder you are allowed and free to shut off comments. Keep up the hard work. You are doing the best you can and it shows. You are incredibly talented with wood work.
GREAT IDEA! I'M OVER HERE JUST BLOWING GASKETS OVER THE AUDACITY OF THESE PEOPLE!!! (Love your cookstove, girl!!!)
I would also say I too would be concerned about people watching this video and contacting authorities regarding how you care for your child
Hands down the best advice I was given as a new mom was; Dress your baby as you would dress yourself. I brought my newborn home in a onsie, a ski suit thingy, and swaddled. We lived in the desert granted it was December about 55 degrees way to warm to be that bundled. My stepdad immediately stripped the baby down to the onsie and baby blanket. Head hands feet this is where heat escapes. Everyone has advice and opinions. Your doing great! We just don't tell people this enough. The baby hates the crib... Happens. My son slept 2 nights in his he hated it! Screamed every time we put him in it. It all gets figured out in the end. People gonna have opinions. You do what you feel is right and works for you! Congratulations on your baby!!
What is wrong with you parents!
You don’t take a new born out without a coat!
Please read about how to take care of your little baby.
I like the handle looks like an animal head :)
Hahaha some sort of head at least!
Good job on the door! All from scraps. But I must say, I don’t like the handle either, sorry! 🤷♀️😂
I absolutely love the outhouse handle… gives so much character, especially being in Alaska. 💪🏽
Thats a suggestive handle Cody no wonder Lori was laughing xx
Hang plants on the screws
Your first beautiful daughter you call her “the Kid”????? Wow -not over the shock of being a dad?!!!
Doesnt she have a name?
@@herdagriffin1220 Rowan
😮 this was such a weird video. I am a bit scared for that child’s life now.
That baby is fine. Did you realize there are actually other countries that leave their babies in their bassinet or strollers and leave them outside to sleep? Builds a healthy immune system
@@ReneeOh hmm. Thank you. May be a bit later in life you can start cold training. I know Rowan will be ok. The video just was strange with that outhouse door slamming at the end and baby being barely dressed.
@@ReneeOh Every time i've seen that those babies are bundled up tight. Im from Alaska and know some of these comments are ridiculous but they should have thrown a blanket over her. She was less than two weeks old when this video was filmed. If parents needed sweatshirts and jackets it was cold enough baby needed a blanket. Babies can't regulate their temperature until much older and she is much too young to be "used to it"
How close r u 2 Becca n Levi?
Couple hours
That turned.out pretty nice!
Side note how did your seeds come up?
Liking the new intro sequence
Hello my name is Daniel I currently live in California but have been planning for a permanent move to Alaska. I am planning to purchase some land at the end of the year but would also like an experienced person to show me the basics I might need to live in Alaska. Is that something you would be able to help with?
@remotelifealaska. Thanks i appreciate it. I plan on visiting Alaska in a couple months. Is there anyway I can get in contact with you through email or through youtube a couple weeks before i make the trip? What would be the best way to contact you? We can go over compensation for your time and where we can meet? I plan on using the first half of the trip to go an see the plots of land im interested but the later was hopefully trying to find someone who can show the basic of remote living. Thank you!
Our email contact is in the description. We are more than willing to share what we have learned along the way.
Thank you! Im planning to visit in july. I will be in touch. Till then!
Will get better nest time
Yes, now you will have to worry about the entirety of the internet telling you what you're doing wrong with your baby, so ignore them (you can't please everyone). You're both going to do just fine, congrats!
Nice work
❤
😊
♥
Great job and take all the comments form one side and move to the other you guys hang in there doing great one day at a time 🙏👍
Great video beautiful land up there
Just want to say that just because there's snow on the ground doesn't mean its cold outside.✌️
@@alisontanner6805 ✌️
They are both dressed warmer than the baby. No blanket, hat or booties. I saw her little bare feet. Sad. 😔
@@NancyS-qx3ez
Yes. You are
@@BKAD623-hz7ln I think the vast majority of people here agree that the baby should be covered warmer.
@@NancyS-qx3ez
Most people thought Biden would be a good president. They were wrong
Love the door handle.
Cody, you did a great job with projects around the homestead. Please try to ignore or can you block some of the naysayers that seem to be hinting at reporting you?
Just keep on keepin on and I love watching you, Lori and Rowan🥰
HEY Y'ALL who don't know the facts... 40s in Alaska with no wind is Springtime and very nice temps❕‼
You viewers need to leave them alone. Babies are resilient. People have been raising babies in Alaska forever. So many of you had mean comments about them building their home, and it has turned out fine. Give them a break. Lori, you are a good mom. Ignore these ignorant folks.
Yes, but if don’t need to put clothes on the baby inside, at least throw a blanket over her. The baby’s arms and feet are bare! Who does that? Wonder how far their home is from medical care.
I think a man has a responsibility to provide a decent place for his wife and baby to live. I dont see that happening here.
Don't come to this channel then
@@bethbeasley7417 I used to but unsubscribed which I think more will do.
This whole patriarchy thing is pretty much obsolete now. Women have a role in the family besides birthing babies and taking care of the man. When they were building this house she was just as actively involved in the construction as he was.
The channel is called remote life. Not everybody gets their way of life. They're doing just fine, living a great lifestyle. Don't watch...obviously you don't understand
Maybe open your eyes then. Their set up is extremely common in Alaska. MANY homes do not have running water or indoor facilities. So many so that laundromats have pay showers and there are public water sources in nearly every town to fill your jugs. If you've got a roof over your head and a means of keeping warm, that's all that's needed. You do realize they are building out of pocket and just started less than a year ago. They've made great progress.
Great job on the door. A platform is what I would suggest. I know others think the baby isn't warm enough but unless you have lived in the very cold you don't get it. When it gets to 45 outside many people are in tshirts. I've always been told dress the baby as you dress if you are cold they are cold etc.
You guys are great parents and this year is going to be amazing.
I hope you have a real toilet or at least indoor compost for potty training ❤❤❤
My baby sister use to send me calenders of out houses every year ...tell last...
Now I have a" thing" to send her..." Thank You."
Love my 3 sisters. Especially Laura...
