Imagine a fighting game where every new DLC character costs $500 and dominates the rest of the cast. That's YuGiOh. Edit: I do find this format to be vastly better than Snake Eye, but Fiendsmith-anything feels no different to me.
As someone who has been playing this format, I feel like this is the most enjoyable the game has been in a while. I think the price point is a huge barrier to entry for most people, and there is no reason a deck should cost $500, let alone $1000, but the format itself is very fun. Oftentimes the game isn't over turn 1, and there's a nice back and forth that happens if both players are playing the good cards. I wouldn't want to pilot the Ryzeal deck personally, but I think it's the healthiest tier 1 deck we've had in a very long time. Its endboard isn't that crazy, its turn 1 takes very little time, and it has clear weaknesses that you can tech for. The hallmark of Ryzeal is that its floor is so insanely high that it's almost always getting to play the game to some degree. Maliss is also very fun. Its endboard is layered, but it can be difficult to pilot, meaning there's a lot of room for rogue players who know their decks to body a bad maliss player, even if they go full combo. Neither deck is putting up an unbreakable board, but they will win the grind game if you aren't prepared for it. Crossover Breakers is also a fun product to open, which is something I haven't been able to say in a long time. I went to locals on release with a few friends, and we were able to build almost 4 complete decks out of 9 boxes. If you're interested in either deck, you're essentially guaranteed to pull something you need, or have stuff to trade for what you need out of a single box. For people who still don't like this format, I am curious. Besides the price point (which I completely understand and also see as a problem), what do you want from a yugioh format? What could they do to make the game appealing to you?
Prices these days are vendors fault and early buyers falut. We all cant agree on something being wrong but supply it. Konami tcg should have told use about the qcr though so more would have bought sealed
I do think this format is interesting and one of the best we've had in a bit, heck goblin might be goated thanks to ryzel My big issue is Konami kinda forcing the biggest decks Snake-eyes and tenpai were already power crept yet got hit anyways I doubt we would have seen much competitive play of either without the bans and it means that players who invested in the deck fell riped off and can't even bring it to locals I also just want fun archetypes things like weather painter, goblin heck ryu-ge is a great example Not cyber link slop (again) and zoo 2
Dude this format is pretty cheap actually. You can get the whole ryzeal core for less than $300. The Maliss core even cheaper. While it isn't tenpai cheap, for a tier 1 and 2 deck that's not bad. This past year the SE deck actually was 1k with bonfires, witches, wanted, etc.
Nowadays even when the new decks are very clearly the best deck in the format, Konami will still give them an additional wave of support for no reason. Also the first printing of any new card should always be a common or rare.
Support cards i designed before the set even comes out thats why. They show you in the card art or just give you a puzzle missing pieces. It already planned so they cant stop.
Thing is, Ryzeal and Maliss are only in their most primitive state. Lord only knows what the first support wave will bring. And we've seen what that can do for build-pack archetypes that were UNPLAYABLE out of the box. Imagine the boost a pair of Tier 0.5's will get
I would love to see YGO go back to having to add risks for a strong deck to function. Engines filled with starters that also function as extenders and engine requirements being replaced with extra deck slots have made so many older deck strategies nearly unplayable.
While I do love Yugioh and am trying to sort of get back In, I’m definitely not taking it as seriously as I used to compared to pokemon. The cost to compete outweighs the rewards, regardless that it’s a “hobby”. Pride be damned. Imperfectly fine playing locals and regionals if it means I can compete at a lower price.
For now it is. Eventually it will be powercrept as well. What he wanted to say is that konami makes a step back every once in a while "fixing" the format by hitting the best decks just to make it unbalance the very next set by releasing decks that are much stronger than the rest of the current format. Like tears were, like snake eyes/ yubel were and now maliss/ryzeal is
For Maliss I wish they would've full committed to just high-end and low-end prints. The deck actually isn't that expensive outside of Rabbit and the field spell, but if you think I'm spending $150 - $200 on a playset of ultra rares you're out of your got damn mind.
Even Ryzeals best boards don't feel as opressive as Yubel or snake eyes last format. If Ryzeal is the best deck, compared to last format it is so much more fun. It's not "draw at least 2 handtraps or you lose turbo"? You lose. I managed to beat Ryzeal with my Ashened deck due to Super Poly. It's got a good matchup against it surprisingly, but one solid way of removing/negating Detonator and checking plugin/imperming Duodrive and the deck crumbles. Now the Fiendsmith variant I can't speak to haven't played against that yet.
I want to address some points in this video 1) ryzeal being dominant is a good thing as the deck is increidbly easy to build against. From a competative perspective formats like this where there is a de facto best deck but has clear weakenesses is way less annoying than the previous one where only weakeness to one card combo decks was you having to play a million hand traps to stop them. SE was a problem deck before OSS was not banned because if you let 1 starter or extender resolve they won the game. 2) power level of the current 2 decks is lower than that of SE or Yubel a few months ago. While both of them play to specificallt hand traps better and after a year of this type of deckbuilding, yugioh players are I think unable to comprehend they can evaluate a deck based on more things than "how much non engine can the deck run". Detonator is busted and if you opened only engine or 2 hand traps into maliss you are dead true but you can even sometimes play into detonator with only engine. These decks are weaker compared to oppressive boards that yubel or SE made through 2 or 3 hand traps. 3) with crossover breakers this is entirely vendor's fault and people refuse to acknowledge it. Its a deckbuild set and best cards are URs and you can probably pull a full ryzeal core in 2 booster boxes give or take, but since the decks are even remotely competative the "poor vendors who have to keep the lights on for their card shops" have to artificially inflate the cost so that they quadruple the profit. Crossover beakers is a profitable set and so was infinite forbidden but vendors want to milk them as much as possible for cards that are not worth the money, this is not another bonfire scenario when there was only 1 good card in the whole set. But people will not put in the effort to actually understand that vendors are at fault and will instesd make another "konami bad" video where konami wants your money or something. Konami is shady and has some really corrupt peactices to sell new product but crossover breakers is entirely the vendor's fault.
Let's be the real a big part of why ryzeal is this dominant isn't only that it's the best by far but also because it's far more accessible (compared to snake eyes yubel etc) far cheaper of a core(fiendsmith not included)
Actually we always got new fairer cards that not vomit everything in turn 1. If only Konami make an alternative format with fair decks like them. But too bad, those "fair" decks usually just a tool to highlight the power of other unfair cards. So, it will bait players to buy those expensive cards because they're look strong, or maybe just to create some kind of "peer pressure", because sometimes you cannot even play the game if your deck weak.
The voiceless vs ryzeal matchup isnt actually that bad, nadir servant beats detonator + field spell by itself, and theyll never be able to crossout your dominus purges. Format is pretty fun imo

This format is way more healthy than Snake-Eyes/Tenpai/Yubel. In fact, it’s far more healthy than recent years. Not perfect but no, Ryzeal is not an issue.
It's an issue for those that want to play rouge or non meta, 3 pops + dweller kills so many rouge decks even good ones like memento. While a agree the format is the best we've had in a while that dosent mean it's a non issue

But one thing thats certain is that just because a deck takes a lot of top cut doesnt mean its bad. Josh just covered this in a recent vid. The format is fine. Its not blow my dick off good but its fine. Also in terms of price, its not bad. The ryzeal core is only around 280. And maliss even cheaper. Fiendsmith is expensive but you dont have to play it. Ryzeal pure is plenty good enough for your money.
I can’t stand every yugituber bitching about the new format. These two decks are much more fun to play both with and against than snake eye or yubel or tenpai ever were. There are deckbuilding choices you can make to beat both, you can run a smaller, more diversified nonengine package, you have options with different engines to build your deck. Yes the decks are amazing, but they have clear outs that almost any deck can run. You just ult slavered the ryzeal player? If you have literally any other card in your hand you’ll win. You just lancea’d the Maliss player? Same thing. The great part about this format is each player can turn skip their opponent so there’s at least more counter play possible than just “hope you’re on 22 handtraps bucko”
Also each meta deck is about less than 200 dollars for the main engine. Disingenuously using staples to additionally add to the price when every person attempting to play this game competitively will already have their ash’s, imperm, etc. ryzeal and Maliss are both 200 dollar decks in their entirety

It's been the norm since 2017 with the release of Links. It's not that the Link mechanic was a bad idea on paper, but it made the game speed up to a degree that caused board breakers and handtraps to become even more broken as a necessity. It's not a healthy game
