I feel like this only feels rushed to fans that know the songs really well, to everyone else it probably sounds fine and they managed to fit in the whole cast and a good chunk of the beginning storyline in 4 minutes
But beyond it just feeling rushed to avid fans, the performance just didn't land well. Because it was so rushed, the singing was out of tune and shaky, the actors didn't seem nearly as in line with their characters as in the cast recordings or clips of the show, and almost none of the jokes landed. It's just disappointing because we know this cast is capable of so much and this performance unfortunately didn't show it off well.
Yeah I heard this song here for the first time and it doesn't sound like they were rushing to me but then again I haven't heard it recorded in the studio so I wouldn't knoe
To me it sounded off and kinda unentertaining. This was before I got in the musical and the performance kinda drew me away from it :0

Mean Girls fans are the worst critics. I'm glad CBS shut off the comments. This was the only way they could give all the leads a solo and feature the entire cast. Also, every show only had 4 minutes. Squeezing "Revenge Party" into only 4 minutes would have been even worse. This performance frankly wasn't even for fans who have already watched the bootleg and already like the show. It was about attracting new people. Everyone else thought the performance was fine.

Dear Ariana I mean it’s mostly pink, but it’s purple cause pink and blue make purple. Pink represents her status as a plastic, and blue represents her sadness and anxiety about being Regina’s “best friends”

Did you even consider the logic I had behind my original comment or do you just go straight to insulting people's intelligence as a hobby?
I think it's funny that people are complainging about what was performed. While I would have liked to see 'Meet the Plastics', it probably doesn't have enough ensemble work to showcase the musical. What they did pulls in a majority of the cast, includes 2 songs (both showcasing the witty lyrics), and presents very creative choreography. The purpose of a production number on the Tonys is to get people who haven't seen/might be interested in seeing the show to go out and buy a ticket.
Think of it as a live movie trailer. And for that, it was perfect.
I agree with people that it should have been slowed, or maybe just Meet the plastics, but they were able to get the full company on stage for the performance tho which I applaud.

The cast was obviously awesome, I just thought the decision to include as much as they did wasn’t a good idea, cause the comedic timing had no time to land.
My biggest issue is that the rushed nature of it doesn't allow the jokes to land. But they did what they could, and I'm sure they wanted to use their full ensemble and this number is the best one to introduce a larger audience to the musical. I just hope that larger audience would listen to the soundtrack to get the full scope of just how funny 'Meet the Plastics' is.
This performance was just so underwhelming. They totally should have done another song like world burn
Everyone complaining, please remember as amazing as Barrett and Revenge Party both are, the cast members who were nominated at this ceremony were Grey, Taylor, and Ashley... and the song they picked was a combo of the only part of the show where all 3 of them get to sing. It makes sense they did Where Do You Belong and Meet The Plastics, to showcase their nominees.
I feel like Grey still has a hefty amount of lyrics in Meet the Plastics so they should have just done Meet the Plastics, and it would have been so less rushed.
Scostrich I think they did what they did to include as much of the ensemble as possible. Everyone in the show was in this performance in some capacity including swings and standbys.

I believe they had to showcase all of their nominated actors, which included Grey (who only has like three lines in Meet The Plastics, two of which are sung alongside others ?? maybe you got confused saying he has a 'hefty amount') so this was the best combination of songs in the limited time they had to display Taylor, Ashley AND Grey.
Most of the other shows that performed did not feature all the nominated actors. What number(s) a show performs at the Tonys is almost entirely up to the production team of the show performing, so I think they could've picked something better.

I think Meet The Plastics was nice and funny, and introduced the main characters which are the plastics and they all had there own singing parts that displayed there personalities.
they had to showcase their nominated actors; grey, taylor and ashley. this set of songs is probably the best fit to do within the time span while showcasing the actors though it’s very rushed.

i wish they had done another song but it would have been hard because both “where do you belong?” & “meet the plastics” don’t require a ton of background knowledge on the plot and they kinda introduce the show and because it is a short performance for an award show they had to pick songs that wouldn’t confuse people too much.
Plus it’s the only song that features Taylor, Grey, and Ashley, and those were the ones nominated at these Tony Awards.
Not hating on the performance, but you can tell that taylor wasn't prepared for higher key they put it in, as in the professionally filmed version, you can see it on her face. She adjusted quickly. Props to the actors for pulling two songs off in 4 minutes performance!

yes the performance was A LITTLE rushed, but they were able to mashup two songs, and include all of the cast, as well as swings and standbys. all of their tony nominees were showcased in the very small time limit. all in all id say that it was a really good performance given everything they were able to achieve

The “her hair is full of secrets” and “she asked me to spell orange” lines from Damian are just not funny like they were in the movie. I think stage-Janis is waaaay funnier than stage-Damian whereas I always thought the opposite with movie-Janis and movie-Damian. :/

Even if this performance is rushed, it was still a great one. Mean girls the musical is amazing for people who wanna have a good time and want a good laugh (which is what the tony voters didn’t want smh.) I felt like Tina Fey was robbed of best book and Grey Henson was a great Damian and was also robbed. I still consider this one of the best movie made musicals, and the songs convey the ideas presented in the movie really well, especially I’d rathe be me and world burn :)

I hate how some people are commenting that it is pitchy. Of course it’s going to be a little pitchy, this isn’t the cast recording. Singing live is hard, and unless you’ve somehow mastered not sounding pitchy singing live, then I don’t want to hear it!
It reminded me on “This Is Where You Brlong”, don’t quote me on the title, but the song that Corden sang at the Tonys as an opening number. The final beat is quite similar

Danmaku Express this is a reoccurring theme with Barrett's live performances of songs from this show so chill with the sarcasm. She tends to do this a lot with her high notes. Not to mention I am such a huge fan of Barrett's and desperately wanted to fall in love with this show. Nobody's free of criticism.

I was just trying to get the point across that yes, she's off-key, but to base it off on the album is like comparing a chef's cooking to an artist's cooking and I thought you were just not understanding how taxing singing in such conditions can be.

I completely comprehend that it's insanely difficult to sing that way under so much stress and while performing such an intense number, Phillipa Soo is an amazing performer, and even she had trouble at times singing on key in "the Schuyler sisters" when she was doing Hamilton! She's still amazing, so is Barrett, those conditions are admittedly ridiculously difficult to sing under and I'm not trying to discredit them, just pointing out what unnoticed.
I agree. People are still mad that they didn’t do Revenge Party. Barrett is very nervous singing in a group here. She might’ve been too nervous to do a solo on the Tony’s which I totally understand.
