got a 6'0" carbon wrap baby buggy and holy shit it's the best small wave board I've ever ridden. low continuous rocker and not a super wide nose, the wider tail keeps speed and flow amazingly. so much spring in the tail. I can even grovel with it and still whip it around because it really is a shortboard and not a step down.

eps marko blanks are probably the best for shaping for bead tightness but it's worth remembering to leave the water immediately if you ding it because ALL eps will take up water. Even poly cups which are super compressed do, you just don't notice because its a throw away item used for a very short time. once eps takes up water capillary action will take it a long way so it's pretty much impossible to get out again. I was told this by a blank manufacturer/supplier worker who does dings on the side and hates dealing with eps .

lol I love how passionate this guy is. He would have made a cool science teacher. I carve old boards and blanks into art- I am trying to find the best styrofoam to work with - I normally have to cut the stringer out and replace it with a piece I have to cut from a blank. :( which is a PITA. Any recommendations on what I should order from you? I need something that will do cleaner cuts using an Exacto knife and is easy to sand.

I ordered a 6'0 20 2 9/16 baby buggy carbon wrap got it a hair thicker cause I'm moving back to the east coast soon so I was thinking of the extra wetsuit weight

I've been using Marko foam and it is the best to shap with . when you polish it up good it almost acts as poly. EPS is hard to shape, if you're not careful you may end up taking way too much material , more then what you intended because tends to flake off . MarkoFoam is the best in the west homes.=)...

Great Episode. I love all of the information regarding EPS Blank production and Carbon Wrap technology. (Oh and your board review as good too...haha). There is so much alternative technology out there right now it's a bit hard to sift through all of the options. Are you still a PU most of the time type of guy or are you migrating to one of the many new options for production?

If you had to pick one board to use in all conditions and wave sizes , what board would you pick?? , just asking because I'm a young guy and can only afford one board so just trying to find a good all rounder that enables me to do a bit of everything , thanks
ALL conditions and wave sizes? Very tall order, but I get where you're coming from. I think your ability to meet 'all conditions' goes up dramatically with two boards. For example a Lazy Toy and Bean Bag suit 80% of the soft waves in CA above 2 ft that look fun enough to get me excited. But if you can only have one I think a Quiver Killer or a Hypto Krypto can give you insurance on the high end while leaving out the really small waves. A Lazy Toy or a Puddle Jumper or a Potato Nator gives you insurance on the low end while getting a bit out of control in big waves.

Cool and informative video. My main thought throughout: Damn that's a good looking surfboard.
I know boards flex, but I am skeptical that they flex to the degree that you emphasize in your videos.
It would be cool if you would do a video where a board is flex stress-tested to demonstrate what kind of flex parameters are possible given the materials and shaping in a typical modern board.
This is why I reference everything as totally subjective. Some swear they feel certain flex/performance while others don't' notice a thing. I think Lib Tech has got a fancy contraption they use to test flex characteristics of all sorts of boards up in Washington... wonder if I'll ever get to goof off with it..
Someday soon cameras will be small and precise enough, someone could just put a small GoPro-like camera on their board and we could see how much flexing actually happens in the rail during a turn. I'd be REALLY interested to see how much a fin with a specifically engineered "flex pattern" (like Blackstix) actually flexes during a turn. I've always wondered what those things are doing under my feet and the timing of when they load up and release.
The GoPro still seems like it's too big to do this right now, and you'd need something that isn't a wide-angle lens.

idk if it's just me but I have a hydroflex glassed varial board and a varial board with polyester resin. the poly board feels so much more natural and smooth going through turns. like it's doing alot of the work for you and the hydroflex board feels kind of stiff. you have to push on it alot harder to feel the same kind of input. I guess it could be from the difference in shapes also? But it really seems like a flex thing to me.
I loved the review you did on Channel Islands Average Joe . The average joe has carbon panels as well right? Does it have a similar design pattern as these Carbon Wrap boards? Are the panels in the average joe running down the nose and splitting in the tail? Does it have a panel in the middle?
The method of wrapping carbon around the board from bottom to top like this is patented by Dan MacDonald in Aus, and I think Lost is the only brand licenced to use it in the States or anywhere. Joe just has carbon on the deck to protect against compression under your back foot, nothing wrapping around the board.
Just picked up a 6'2" Puddle Jumper in Carbon Wrap but New England waves have been flat the last 7 days so waiting for a nice 2-3ft day to roll in so I can try it out! Im 5'11" 220 with my wetsuit and average surfer. I think this size is right for me, but some are saying its too big. Waves around here average about 2-4 from spring to fall with bigger days sprinkled in here and there. What do you think? Also, how about doing a BLOOPER reel just for kicks. You talk so fast and pack so much info into your videos I bet you have some good bloopers...
Yes :) bloopers happen for sure. Regarding Puddle Jumper dims, I'm happy you asked, because I recently had an experience that changed my thinking on this - here's some backstory: I enjoy boards like the Bean Bag, Baked Potato, etc at around 5'4 to 5'6 with 33 - 38 liters of volume. They're so fun. But I was in Mexico last year at a right hand point, and one day the crowd and the soft, small waves had me bumbed out, so I borrowed someones MASSIVE Sweet Potato (6'2, 56 liters of volume) just to pass the time. It wouldn't turn at all, but on a fast, soft wave that went for about 50 yards I would just glide glide glide over soft section after soft section in three or four foot waves. And it was 2X as much fun as I expected on a board I would usually never look twice at. The same experience happened to me on a 6'0 Puddle Jumper last month. It took effort to turn and control, but for going straight and floating over sections it absolutely gave me a fun, unique hour of surfing in 4 foot weak waves that I wouldn't have had on my normal dims. So did you go a bit bigger than most? Yes you did. But it doesn't mean you won't have fun. Also remember that resale value on ...Lost boards is usually real good, so you won't be hurting too much if you sell it.

I bet those carbon strips are hard to accurately glass-in. Can't even imagine how they do it with a single peice wrapping the rail. Maybe over the laminating coat?

I seen a video of how they did it.. It's pretty much the same way as they put the lams on, they get a brush with a little resin brush it where they wanna lay it put down the carbon then a squeegee over it

Can I just make a nerdy comment? The term cubic liters is wrong used. The right way to say it would be just liters. If you want to use the term cubic you're referring usually to a uni-dimensional magnitude and you add the cubic word before to say that you're talking about volume and not distance. So for cubic you can say cubic centimeters or cubic meters. 1 L + 1000 Cubic Centimeters. Sorry about that.... The show is great!
@Federico Ponsa Thank you for this. Nerdy is a good thing and I'm grateful for the insight. I say 'Cubic Liters' in reference to Whitney Guild's 'Guild Factor'' - the scale used by Lost, Super, Arakawa and others - where surfer body weight is correlated to fitness level and skill to spit out a surfers perfect volume (in theory). I've taken Whitney at face value that 'Cubic Liters' is just as accurate as saying 'Liters', but if this term is wrong, I don't want to use it. For reference, Whitney's 'Guild Factor' and a list of ...Lost's team riders ideal volume in "Cubic Liters' are shown at the link here: www.lostsurfboards.net/volume-calculator/ But moving onward, I'll continue with my normal habit of just saying 'Liters'. What is the flex life on this bad boy? I ditch my PU boards every 6 months. I am making the full transition to EPS because i need my boards to last a year. I have 4 FF Chemistry's, a EPS VEctor Net Vampirate, and am looking to replace the remaining PUs with Carbon wraps. Just trying to figure out the ROI on my investment because they'll be custom.
Was wondering if you have any opinion on Degree33 Surfboards, reviews were extremely mixed!
