    The Slater Designs Sci Fi, and Omni, as well as other boards designed by Daniel 'Tomo' Thomson are made in a range of Firewire Technologies, from Future Shapes to Linear Flex to Timbertek. This video explains the difference between each Firewire Tech, and illustrates how the way a surfboard is built can impact your surfing, just as the way its shape does.
    All three of the Firewire techs in this video are seen in a range of shapes from Jon Pyzel to Rob Machado and Slater Designs, in shapes like the Pyzalien, Slab and Almond Butter and Creeper.
    Which Firewire tech is your favorite?

    love FST and Timber tek.
    But i do like foot wells that mould to your feet, would love a board with LFT deck skin and FST bottom that would be an awesome combo.

    I've felt FST has the most of that "corky" feel that you get with EPS foams. Both boards I've had in FST also had big compressions on the deck where my front foot goes. The only thing i found to reduce that corky feel was to go down in volume a fair bit but then sacrificing paddle power. This took me back to PU boards. Not sure if LFT would feel closer to a PU board? The only thing that's drawing me to back alternative technologies is the retention of flex over time compared to PU boards but then the buoyancy needs to feel similar to PU. Can't have it all I guess...

    You didn't comment on it, but I picked up on something from the cut-away. They have figured out a way to do something I have had various ideas about for a long time, but their idea is better and more advanced than Mine. Namely, they have the stringer below the surface of the deck, allowing for the foam to get crushed down, without causing it to crack along the stringer, like what happens with typical surfboards. This aids in not getting water intrusion through the cracks and prevents delaminization of the deck from the foarm. -- Briliant!

    • @firewiresurfboards
      @firewiresurfboards  8 лет назад +6

      Thanks for noticing Mike. You're right about LFT. Its designed to have the footwells some surfers love but without the risk of cracking where the deck would meet the stringer in other center stringed boards.

    Have a 5'5 evo- LFT. Got it last July and for 6 months it felt like the best board I've ever had. From 2-5 foot all types of waves it was the bomb. Only problem, it doesn't now. It feels like it lost its 'pop' very quickly. I felt the same thing happened with a sweet potato (rapid fire) . Both boards felt great for a period then almost lost their response within a few surfs. Not sure if this is a common concern?

I also have the Vader in fst fot kitesurfing and the board holds up very well... I don't understand how the fst is lighter than the lft.... my 5'6 tomo feels lighter than the 5'1 Vader fst.

    Chris! Shred Show was my favorite board review video and I'm happy you got this great Gig, but please don't forget to keep it fun, wacky and light! There may be pressure to keep it more professional and talk slower and not be as wacky, but that's what made Shred Show so great. Keep it Funny and loose! Not over produced and scripted! That said, I found the video informative and look forward to more, but hope they let you loosen up. My friends been raving about the Evo as LFT. Can't wait to borrow his. Also, I'd love to hear where this stuff falls spec (flex and weight) Vs. a classic PU board.

    Good morning FireWire,A quick question 4U,& then some.Purcahased a
    6'2"Omni for the Winter here in NJ.Yes NJ,& we do get good surf, Especially in the WINTER.Thusly, I chose a 6'2" Omni.Thinking that 6'2" was going 2b
    2sm, Being a solid200 lbs,w/all the winter gear:5mm gloves & booties;RipCurl Flashbomb Technology.Works well 4 my cold needs in the NE.
    Anyway I find that my 6'2" Omni works rather well in the more powerful surf& not as well in smaller, weaker surf.I also feel that I could go a bit shorter6'0" or maybe even 5'10 for a " better fit"+ a loss of 10+ lbs.Unless your coming out w/a
    groveler???
    Thanks...

    Question: Why has Machado decided to go with LFT for the Go Fish after using solely TimberTek for the Creeper and Almond Butter?

    • @firewiresurfboards
      @firewiresurfboards  7 лет назад +1

      Rob will be on The Wire podcast this month. Maybe I'll get into it with him.... In the meantime... If you look at his three new boards (Go Fish, Midas and Almond Butter) they all have the same concave. Somehow Rob got to feeling that LFT was most in sync with his three new shapes, and around here, Rob gets what he wants without us asking too many questions :). So his new boards are in LFT.

    I find the 7'6" Seaxe at 3" thick ideal but i have yet to find a fin setup i am happy with. Any feedback from you or others appreciated.

    well, 2.9 kg for a PU construction is a lot. I asume that board is something like 5'10? Any pro poly glasser could take it to 2.6 if not below with a light foam blank.
    I miss your show Chris. I hope they r treating you well.

      Just this month the Evo became available at many surf shops in Timbertek for the first time ever, and even though we've made a few test prototypes of the Evo in FST, we don't' have plans to release it to surf shops right now. In regards to surf shops - we think they're an integral part of what makes surf culture so special, and we want to support them, so for the moment, they are the only place where you can find Firewire Surfboards.

    Good video... I've gone through about 13 or so boards in the last 11 months, all but 2 were Firewire, and found by far my favorite construction to be FST. Currently have 8 boards on my rack, 4 of which are Firewire - all FST. Tried RF, LFT, TT and of course FST. RF seemed very similar to LFT (but with carbon rods instead of the springer?), both techs dinged too easily for me, though still OK, just prefer the durability of FST. TT on the other hand, I had a bad experience with and would find it hard to trust again, as it was constantly getting splits along the grain for such minor things PU boards wouldn't ding over... was in for repairs more than it was in the water.

    • @Ed-wm8dx

      13 boards!!!!?? 13 x £700 = £9100, this doesn't include fins pads leashes. Nor wetsuit gear, that's insane what job do you do? Can you buy me one I'm struggling to afford one board as they're so ridiculously priced now

    • @ingoFX
      @ingoFX 3 года назад +1

      @@Ed-wm8dx you're right, that would be nuts 🤪 - a little less nuts was the way I was doing it ("was" because I don't have as much time to go surfing as I used to 😟)
      I haven't actually bought a brand new board in years 😉 most of my boards were bought and sold on Gumtree second hand... 99% of the time resold for what I bought them for (which was the key to being able to do this - and the fact that the second hand board market is pretty big on the gold coast).
      It all started after I originally used to hang onto a single *new* board I'd use for everything - then every few years would move into another new board, until a bit over 7 years ago, I bought a new board that I absolutely hated.
      I couldn't afford another new board so soon after just buying one, so started looking on Gumtree etc for something I might like better, and over the next 5 or more years got obsessed with finding the perfect board, buying and selling more than 50 second hand boards in that time... I'd only buy a board that was priced well enough I knew I'd be able to re-sell for the same money if I didn't like it.
      I found that generally, firewires were the easiest to resell... Haven't really done it much for the past couple of years both due to lack of time as well as being pretty happy with the quiver of boards I ended up with 😁
      BTW - my comment above was a long time ago now... Been through a lot more boards since then, but I still like the old FST construction, as well as the newer helium construction from firewire, but one of my favourite boards has turned out to be an old Tomo SKX in LFT, which I still can't seem to get off of in months as my daily driver... It still goes so well for me, I just don't feel any urgency to try something new like I used to (of course there's always new boards I keep an eye out for, in case a bargain pops up on Gumtree etc 😉 )

    Awesome video. I have a question. Almost everyone on forums etc who rides Firewire seems to prefer FST construction followed by TT so why is it that so many models are only made in LFT? I hear so many people saying they would be sure to buy certain models if they were available in FST or TT. Why then, do Firewire release their most popular models in their least popular tech?

    • @firewiresurfboards
      @firewiresurfboards  7 лет назад +1

      The way that each shape gets built is usually a mix of what surfers are asking for, and what the board designer prefers... For example, Rob Machado was excited by TImbertek, so his Almond Butter and Creeper were made that way, and Tomo prefers LFT most of the time, which is part of the reason the Sci-Fi and Omni were released in LFT, with Kelly Slater's support. Any specific model you want to see in TT or FST?

    • @samsstreets8684
      @samsstreets8684 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply. I would LOVE an Omni in FST. Dream board. The thing is I just can't justify spending full price on LFT because the main reason I can justify spending the money on Firewire is the durability of them. Also, the eco issue is important to me and a disposable surfboard is not eco no matter how much bioresin you throw at it. Thanks again for the reply, I really appreciate it. Also should say I love your shapes, innovation and philosophy. I'm just frustrated that so many of the boards I would love to ride aren't made in FST.

      I would definitely consider TT. I had a TT Potatonator which I liked once I got used to the lower flex and it was certainly very durable. I really like everything about TT except for the flex which I think lacks a bit of spark. For me, FST has the best balance of flex and durability of any surfboard on the market today. I know lots of people agree with me too. With my salary I could never justify buying LFT at full/new price!
