    Kevin is the man! Stoked that he’s on the firewire team providing valuable feedback. I would have liked to hear him talk about the 5’6 since that is one size up from the 5’5. Also, keel fins seem to be on most people’s radar because they are bigger fins and provide more hold and drive, so it would have been nice to hear a little feedback on those style of fins. Other than that Kevin is ripping and the board looks so good! 👌

    Great review Kevin! Very interested in this board..My normal go to boards are 5'7 and 5'9 both are 31 and 31.5L epoxy for small to head high and a bit over. I'm only 153lbs but I like the extra volume for paddling and getting into a wave ( I'm 56 y/o but good shape). I have trouble these days with HP shortboards maintaining speed after hard turns, so doing more of a hybrid thing with more foam, softer rails, and wider boards. So...your (and Firewires) recommendation on this board...Is it more of a hybrid board or HP shortboard, or?? And if I were to get one you guys say the 5'8 or 5'9? Mahalo!

    I'm interested in buying a Flat Earth.
    I have a question, I'm an intermediate surfer 192cm tall and 95kg weight.
    For now I have a 7 'Seaside & Beyond.
    I was thinking of taking the Flat Earth 6'4 "and I wanted to know, if the board helped in anticipating the start on the waves.
    The wave size here is approximately between 1.5m and 2m (Mediterranean Sea not Ocean: D).
    Thanks for the attention

      Hi mate, just had 1st surf in Mediterranean on flat earth 5’9”.
      The board definitely requires dial in, paddling and catching the waves is quite hard (harder than typical daily driver, like pyzel phantom CI og flyer etc), you need to be really in the pocket .
      The board is extremely nimble and love pocket (honestly you cannot ride it in a shoulder , at least on our Mediterranean wind swells)
      Overall I got exactly what I want, a craft, which pushes me to be a better surfer, although it is quite a hard way 😉

    Is the Flat Earth the black twin fin board that Kelly rode at the Billabong Pipe contest?
    If it was... I noticed that Kelly’s twin fins had his Slater logo on them. Is he or will he be following suite with Rob Machado & coming out with fins for his board’s in the future? You were lighting it up on both board’s!!! 👊💪💯🔥

      Hi Shannon - The board Kelly was riding at the Pipe contest was a prototype by a friend in Bali named Mike Wu. Kelly is always experimenting with a variety of shapes from many different designers, and the same holds true with fins. He's been constantly tinkering and experimenting for as long as anyone can remember.

    Hi, I'm really tempted by this board, but I was wondering if you felt there was something about the design of the board that makes it particularly special as a 2+1, because can't you just stick a pair of 2+1 fins in any model and feel the skateiness. I've got a Sci fi 2.0 that I find so user friendly, that I've got to wonder if I really need a Flat earth too...except I wants it.

    Kevin, great review. I do have (a lot)...2 questions for you: it is a good paddler (easy to catch waves...it is because at 47 years old - and not a professional surfer :) - this is important aspect for me) ?
    Then #2: I am riding a 5.9 AM Neck Beard 2 with 29,4L ...from your review I would say that I should go for the 5.9 with 31.7 liters, is that correct ? I am just a bit afraid it can somehow "float to much" (for example I have just tried the Dominator 5.10 at 33 liters from a friend and I could not make the turns because the board rail was not " entering" in the wave). THANKS

    • @kevinschulz4178
      @kevinschulz4178 3 года назад +2

      Jose,
      1) this board paddles incredibly well, lots of foam in the chest and tapered off into the rail line.
      2) in my experience, the extra 2 liter jump in this board made a huge difference for the better. Because of it being a 2+1, it is more loose feeling, so even with added liters, I was still able to push the board around!
      Hope that helps!

    2 Questions for Firewire Surfboards - 1. It seems like the number of shortboard models offered by Firewire has been recently reduced with the website update. Is this the end of all the older models not listed on the website? And 2. Any idea of when you will have increased inventory? Thanks!

    • @firewiresurfboards
      @firewiresurfboards  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for this question Shayne. The number of models has been reduced because of all the demand for each of the new models. In order to make the most popular boards available to everyone who wants them, we had to make less of some of the older models. Stock has been an issue because so many people have been surfing over the past six months as schools, offices and team sports have been closed. We're doing everything we can to get stock levels up soon. Give us a couple months, please. Thanks again for asking this question, because we know it's on everyones mind.

    I ride a Dominator 2 with 2+1 and what you describe and show fits exactly what that board feels like.
    Persuade me I should get something similar. I have waves that depending on the tide go from waist high to overhead and firing in 15 minutes. Can this handle that kind of change better than the Dominator 2, which gets a bit squirrelly in overhead firing waves?

  • @pullinside9
    @pullinside9 3 года назад +2

    Thanks for the review. The board looks fun. I think it's interesting how bigger board holds better than thinner lesser volume one. Usually it's the other way around in my experience. Is this board a strict Twin + trailer design? I'm curious if straight thruster set up for the smaller 5'5" would make it less squirrely. Or maybe bigger center fin. I'm 5'6" / 145lbs so maybe 5'6" stock dims is my jam.

    • @kevinschulz4178

    • @kevinschulz4178
      @kevinschulz4178 3 года назад

      Hey! It was not so much that it was sinking... but the 2+1 setup was much more loose than a traditional thruster at a lower volume, therefor I jumped 2 liters to account more for 'hold' but still have that 'twin fin' feel! The rails on this board are relatively tapered from the center of the board making them more pinched down vs round. Hope that information helped!

      Steve, quite a few of the above clips were actually filmed at barbs/uppers/cottons area. If you were to jump from a No Brainer to a Flat Earth, you're going to notice that the FE has a bit more rocker than the NB and also a more tapered rail line... and of course, the 2+1 fin setup in the FE will give you that 'twin fin feel' but with an added smaller center fin for stability. If you are surfing the areas you mentioned, I would highly recommend the Flat Earth, as it is a playful, quirky board in that style of wave. It would compliment the No Brainer nicely.

    • @kevinschulz4178

      Hey Noah! Again, this is personal preference, but I recommend going up 2 liters! I believe a 5’5 hydro short is 24.1L? I think the 5’5 Flat Earth @ 25.9 liters would actually feel good under your feet. The way the rails taper on this board let the rails sink into the water easier and the twin fin + 1 allows for plenty of maneuverability!

    I know you mentioned it’s better in chest to head high. Most of the time here in Newport Beach the sand bar/ beach break waves range from 1-4ft maybe 5ft on a good day. Would you recommend the board for the smaller surf as well or just more so for the bigger stuff? Looking to get my first twin fin for 1-4 foot Newport Beach waves. Also, I’m torn on sizing. My shortboard is 31-31.5L and was leaning toward the 5’9 at 31.8L but after hearing you should I go up to the 5’10 at 33.4L? I’m 6’1 185lbs and intermediate/ advanced surfer

      Connor, I am 6'1, 160lbs (165 in a wetsuit) and rocking 28.4L, my typical board is 25.5-26L...
      With Newport being a faster, steeper wave, a shorter board might fit better into the pocket. However, the 5'10 might help a little more with paddle power (earlier entry) and glide through sections... If I were to choose for you, I would recommend the 5'10, just because you are going to get that 'twin fin' feel opposed to a traditional thruster hold. Hope that helps!

    • @kevinschulz4178
      @kevinschulz4178 3 года назад +3

      The 2+1 fin setup is the biggest point of difference, giving the board more of a 'twin fin' feel, where the Dominator II has the more traditional thruster or quad feel. The rail on the Flat Earth is also more tapered and pinched, compared to the Dominator II's more round rail. I absolutely love both models, as both handle a very wide variety of surf! It is a complete personal preference as to how you want a board to feel under foot.

      Lee, I haven’t had the chance to ride the NB as a 2+1. I will have a go on that set up next time I ride it. I would consider the Flat Earth a compliment to the No Brainer... FE has a bit more nose rocker and of course the winged round pin tail. I also ride my Flat Earth at 5’7 and NB at 5’5 (stock dims), so a bit more length in the Flat Earth might give you the ability to surf a wider range of wave sizes. Hope that was of help!
