      It's been awhile, but I thought I said so in the video it doesn't show the devices until they're actually plugged in. They may also need to be bootable before being visible.
      I've also since updated my firmware (which I believe resolved some of these issues) so I can't confirm again.

    Thanks for getting this us so quickly! I'm accustomed to fiddling around HP systems I never considered that would a potential issue. I managed to get my Recovery USB detected but CD is still not visible. Either my system has a wonky disc drive or the disc itself is to blame. I'll report back after swapping out some parts.

      No problem. I had a few hours I could burn today so your timing was good for me to get to it quickly.
      Are you sure the CD you have is bootable? It's been awhile, but the only utilities I've seen that require a bootable PE would generally be used for recovery of the primary partitions. For drive cloning that shouldn't be necessary, but I suppose it depends on whatever the vendor of your hardware thought was best. If you happen to have a Seagate drive installed in it (mine came from Dell with one) you can also use Seagate Discwizard for cloning. I used that process on my Dad's Dell 3671 and there's a video on the channel covering the process.

      @@TheBrokenLife My SSD came with cloning software on a bootable disc. I've used it many times on various HP systems, this Dell is the first time I've gotten any issue with it. I just finished swapping in another disc drive and even using an external USB disc drive and still no luck. I went back to to my old HP and the disc is detected but getting a boot error. So bad disc is bad, I guess. My 3880 is sporting a WD Blue. I guess it's time to hunt for some cloning freeware.

    • @TheBrokenLife

      @@deny417 I think WD also offers Discwizard under their brand as well. The actual software is written by Acronis and various companies license it out.

    Your video is great regarding changing Lee Burt order for a Dell Inspiron 3880. However I have followed all of your instructions and my bootable external drive that is plugged into the USB port is not recognized in the boot sequence. Is that true or is there anything else you can suggest?

      @@TheAbrunqaj Oh wow... You have a lot going on there.
      I would probably disable/deselect things in every combination possible to see if you can get the error to cease. I've only ever run more than one wired NIC in a PC once and that was over 20 years ago, so... I'm not very knowledgeable on the topic.
      Speaking of things I haven't thought about in ages, you could also have an IRQ issue of some kind with that many cards in the machine. Windows, at least since around XP, has been pretty good about handling all of that and sorting it out on its own, but every now and then it gets it wrong. You could try moving your cards to different slots (and removing your wifi card since it sounds like you're probably not using it) and see if anything changes. Normally I would expect an IRQ issue to be a problem all of the time and not just at boot up, but, who knows? Good luck! 👍

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  Год назад

      @@JimmyNGX I've never heard of physical media containing BIOS information. By definition, BIOS pretty much has to be a chip somewhere else.
      It's the:
      B - asic
      I - nput
      O - utput
      S - ystem
      The BIOS is what defines access to to all I/O functions, including all available disks (your SSD is still a "disk"). Think of it like map you use to plan a journey. It shows you all of the places you can go, but you need roads and vehicle to get there. In this case, I'd call your SSD the vehicle. The bus and the rest of the chipset would be more like the roads.
      Anyhow... I suspect what might be happening is you could have a device with multiple partitions, with one being a bootable partition, but it's not being cloned for whatever reason. Since you have a Samsung drive, the Samsung utility (I think it's called Samsung Magician?) is the easiest way to clone the entire contents over. You'll just need a way to connect your old boot drive and your Samsung drive to the system at the same time.

    I am actually having a reoccurring crisis that’s turned into a nightmare because I can’t stop a corrupted firmware update. I have entered bios by repeatedly hitting F2 on my keyboard for my dell optiplex 3000 system when turning it on after having to unplug it from power to stop the update failure from staying at 0% for 12 hours or indefinitely if I let it. It was a brand new system as of 07/2022. Can you please help me get this fixed? I have gone into bios and unchecked UEFI as an option to boot from to detect where the issue is stemming and of course what I have found after over an hour of troubleshooting is that the windows 11 23H2 update is corrupted and I can not get it to stop trying to update. I have deselected auto updates altogether. Its freaking insane they won’t let me decide how to secure my computer and they have no fix that I can find for this so called critical update so I’m basically stuck forcing delayed updates and not shutting down my computer at all because if I even try to restart it triggers that stupid update again and this starts all over.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  4 месяца назад

      I'm a little confused about what's going on. I'm going to try to break things out into steps.
      1 - Normally a firmware update failure would result in the entire machine being dead. As in: you wouldn't be able to enter the BIOS settings and change them (that's what the firmware is). Are you still able to enter the BIOS by hitting F2 and change your settings at will? If so, this doesn't sound like a firmware issue... which is good news.
      2 - This sounds more like a Windows update issue. It sounds like you're able to run Windows pretty much normally as long as you don't reboot? If so...
      3 - Back up any critical data on your PC immediately. Pictures, files, browser profiles, whatever.
      4 - Create a "Windows Installation Media" (search for exactly that and you find a Microsoft article along with the require links) USB stick. If you create that stick successfully, it will be bootable so all you should really need to do is put it in the USB port, turn your PC on, and Windows will guide you through the process of getting it to repair itself. If you're really lucky, you may ever have a restore point set that you can roll back to.
      5 - If Windows _can't_ fix itself, that same stick will allow you to create an entirely new installation of Windows, which is why step 3 is important. You normally can tell it to just install Windows again without effecting your files, but you never know how that is going to work out and I personally prefer a fresh start from zero. Again, make sure you cover step 3 thoroughly.
      -----
      There are other ways to repair failed Windows updates, but I find that it's usually easier to just let Windows repair itself or start over. Especially when it comes to the "big" updates like 23H2. For what it's worth, I've only encountered this situation a handful of times over the years. It's nothing to do with 23H2 specifically and I generally encourage people to allow Windows update to run as intended.
      Good luck with it. 👍

      @@michaelgriffin5257 If it was just a raw ISO, then I can see why it wouldn't work, but if you made bootable media with Rufus I would think it would have done something? Weird problem for sure.

      @@michaelgriffin5257 You're welcome! Glad it worked out!
      This does illustrate why it's goofy that Dell doesn't even show it as an option unless it's bootable though.

    This looked like a one-time boot device selection? What if you want to permanently change the boot order?

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  Год назад

      I think the one-time boot menu options (what you get when you first hit F12) are indeed, one time. If you go into the BIOS settings and change the boot order there, _I think_ it's permanent.
      It may remove, or reorder, those devices if they're not present since it can't "see" them (they're not even listed as options when they're not installed), but if you wanted to _always_ boot off of one drive or another, and you _always_ have that drive installed, I would imagine it would do it.

      @@TheBrokenLife When I go to the bios the UEFI seems to show a list of drives with WIndows Boot Manager at the top of the list. To me this seems to imply that Windows Boot Manager should be allowed to select the disk -- but I don't see how to accomplish that.

      @@davejoseph5615 I think Windows Boot Manager is capable of that, but I think it's more commonly used for people that want to enable dual boot on the same disk. It sounds like what you want to do is boot from individual disks. I would suspect if you have 2 bootable devices installed that the BIOS would see them both and allow you to reorder them.
      Do you have 2 bootable devices installed and it's refusing to permanently alter the boot order? If so, what happens if you disable UEFI boot? Same thing? Does each bootable device boot on its own when the other is removed from the system?

      @@TheBrokenLife I used Macrium Free to clone the HD onto the SSD but I have not tried to remove the HD from the system. I don't see videos describing how to set boot order in Windows Boot Manager.

      @@davejoseph5615 Remove the HDD and see if it will boot from the SSD if that's where you want it to boot in the long run. That will verify that it _can_ boot from the SSD.
      I may have misspoken... WBM will allowing booting to installations that are not Windows. I'm not sure if it will control default, but I think you can.

      It's most likely not bootable. You need to have it configured with some sort of OS that boots before you will see it in the order.
