What happened to NECROPHAGIST?

- Arguably the most influential Technical Death Metal band of all time, but Necrophagist haven't released any material since 2004. What actually happened? And is there a 3rd album coming?
- Видеоклипы
Saw someone with a Necrophagist shirt at Black Dahlia Murder’s last tour. This guy looked angry af. I went up to him and said “stay positive, the next album’s coming out soon”. I’ve never seen someone flip a frown to a smile to a laugh so quick.
😂😂😂

Super wholesome

Could you imagine your unassuming mechanical engineer coworker is the godfather of technical death metal and a living messiah to a subsect of society.
Godfather? Ok calm down dude…
That's pretty much what happened to me years ago. I met Muhamed when he worked on his diploma thesis at Mercedes. He sat about 5 meters from my desk. We didn't have any common project to work on and I wasn't his tutor so to me he was only a nice enough young man and we never talked much except for saying hello and goodbye. After some time he was gone and I assumed he had finished his work. About a year later I needed to speak to his former tutor. He was just trying to online register for a metal convention and deciding whether to attend the cast iron or the aluminum alloy speeches. Jokingly I asked about speed or death metal. He looked at me and asked if I listened to such stuff. I told him yes. So the next day he borrowed me his copy of Epitaph and explained that the young student was in a band and had given him the CD as a gift when he left. I didn't expect much, as all those "brother of a friend" bands usually are pretty bad. Boy was I wrong lol.
Muhammed had quit university to go on tour and several years later he picked up again, finished and indeed became an engineer at BMW. Don't know about climbing up the ranks.
Had I only known who was sitting at arms reach for months...
@@Baumscheibenkunst such a cool story!! Thank you for sharing :D
Well he IS turkish so kinda hard to resist a BMW or Merc deal
@@D2ezbmu Chuck Schundler maybe or Steve Vai.
Epitaph is timeless, it could have released today and it would hold up as a modern masterpiece, & 50 years from it will still be awesome
Ok "expert".
That's exactly it!
The technicalities from that album is still way too complex for today's tech metal.
@@Pussinator.69 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
@@Pussinator.69 it's the unusual riffs and harmony that matters in necrophagist's music
I have only watched the first 2 minutes and have it on my watch list for later but thank you for making this 🙏
Surprisingly useless comment from a huge name

He just does that.
Muhammed dropped a near perfect 1-2 combo then disappeared into the engineering world, fuckin madman. Epitaph is a tech death masterclass
While Necrophagist released only two albums, both albums are great in the genre and without reproach. They entered the metal stage at their best and left the same way, which is something respectable. In their touring during 2009 they played a new song "Dawn and Demise" which teased us with the mythical 3rd album that never came out.
Was honored to share the stage with this band on two different occasions. One of the best!
Lucky
did you get to hang out with them? what were they like?
Same
Necrophagist was that band , that influenced my guitar playing most. I looked for good tech death since then, and there are great bands that's for sure but necrophagist was something else. Melodicality connected with technical and theoretical side was one of the best. Many tech death bands, struggling to sound melodical and yet technical at same time, to not sound like random shredding and mindless fast techy rhythm. But necrophagist epitaph to this day has not been beaten. Muhamads brutal growl voice added with those sweats riffs , with Hannes Grossmans blast beats for me was and to this day is best thing that happened to Tech Death.
Check out First Fragment.
look into deadborn youll like it
is that a joke? tha majority of their songs are 95% just vague unplaceable palm muted chugging and random pinch harmonics.
@@FingerinUrDaughter You mean necrophagist????
@@viktorsexpression6832 obviously. in between his overly long drawn out boring sweeps, its nothing but "chugga chugga open E baby"
I totally agree that Muenzner is an underrated virtuoso (and also very prolific, apart from Obscura there are his solo albums and Alkaloid and Hannes Grossmann albums and Eternity's End!). He is my guitar hero that shaped my guitar playing style.
That's awesome, man! I love his work in Eternity's End. It's crazy how he can switch between Tech Death and Power Metal, just shows the ability the guy has.
Muenzner is my favorite guitar play
Great video! I've found out a lot of new stuff from it.
It's insane to think that the album so many people wanted to hear was lying on a dusty HDD for 10 years.
Thanks a lot, man! Yeah i tried to show some of the more recent Tech Death stuff coming out of the scene rn.
Monstrosity's Millennium (1996) is an often overlooked landmark tech death album.
Real shit right here
Saw Necrophagist twice, I believe in 2006 and 2007, once opening for Cannibal Corpse and once headlining summer slaughter with a ton of other sick bands. They were always monstrous live and you can find shitty flip phone footage of the solos from that time and the guitar work is soooo clean and amazing. I remember Muhammed got that guitar deal with Ibanez I think and they made him a seven string and the new album was gonna be in A standard I was stoked for that but alas it never happened. I had a good laugh at your "wishlist" at the end I had to pause it to read it all, this wishlist is very similar to mine. Anyways great video!
I still listen to their two albums on a regular basis. Listened to Epitaph today at work in fact. I don't think I'll ever get sick of listening to the same two albums. They're just so fucking amazing. I was lucky enough to see them two or three times and I remember the most recent which was quite a while ago, I think Summer slaughter up in San Fran, they played a new track. I have yet to find that track. Someone help me for the love of fuck. IT WAS CALLED Dawn and Demise but I'd love to hear a recorded version if it's anywhere on the long lost internet. But it's most likely on that forgotten "hard drive" :(
Necro-fay-just
"A Loathing Requiem" is the closest to Necrophagist stylistically, while being fresh. Diminished harmonic minor riffs for days. It's an older project from Malcolm Pugh of Inferi.
Spawn of Possession is also another band I am longing for a release.
Unfortunately I think they split-up a few years ago, they kicked ass 😢
@@TheQwer176 yes 😓 too bad
Yeah Dennis Rondum and Bryzz confirmed they weren’t doing anything else, unfortunately. SoP was absolutely incredible. I’m happy with their three perfect LPs 😁
@@heyimgoingtoplaysomegames really? I thought they would have another new band/project or something..
@@MichaelMai Yeah it sucks. Through, Christian and Erland are still playing in a shit ton of bands, it’s just that the heart of the writing was done by Jonas Bryssling, and I don’t think he’s writing much these days.
I'll never forget the day I was first showed Necrophagist in 2005. My jaw was on the floor for the entire album. Got to see them live on 3 or 4 occasions. Once with Marco on drums.
Pretty sure if they released new music, it wouldn't take from their timeless legacy. I really hope they'll come back and blast every other tech death band away.
Epitaph by Necrophagist and The Sound of Perseverance by Death will be Forever Timeless.
Untouchable by the test of time.
There is another unreleased album by another extremely underratef technical death metal band. Anata. The Conductors Departure is a masterpiece. Apparently the follow up is shelved due to a dispute with Earache records. Anyone unfamiliar with that album should give it a listen.
poor, poor Anata. Earache seem to have this, along with a few other labels, more than most in the industry.
they are gods, didnt know about shelfed album what a pityyyyy
Didn’t know about this, I played that album to death back in the day. That’s a real shame
I saw both Anata & Necrophagist at MDF in 2006. Both absolutely pummeled.
@@groundscum4-ps4pd I didnt get into death metal until the year after, and i saw that insane line up at summer slaughter in md in 2007. But hearing about anata and necrophagist playing mdf in 2006 is really makin me wish i had known about this stuff sooner. hell yeah that you were there tho!
Epitaph was the album that made me want to perfect drums; not to pick up and start but to stay dedicated to practising technicalities and music as a whole.
I'd now sing along to the Backstreet Boys in glee because Necrophaghist taught me to appreciate music as a fundamental form of art that can be expressed in any way the musician chooses. This had roll on effects that are still characteristics of how I view the world. Necrophagist were quite literally life-changing for me and notably for other musicians - they deserve every shade of glory that could possibly be shared as it is absolutely right that you can hear some Necrophagist in all death metal since.
As a kid that was in 6th grade around 2006 (when RUclips first took off) I discovered Necrophagist and Wintersun and still to this day I’ve never seen a metal band that can match them. Funny thing is when I was in 4th grade the 1st metal band I ever heard was SOAD who I also still love to this day… All my favorite metal bands had short but sweet careers. I don’t blame them for stopping, its their choice, I’d rather have quality over quantity if they think they aren’t satisfied with what they’ve made.
i think it's better to burn out than fade away. who would have ever believed that Morbid Angel would be legitimately in the conversation for both best and worst death metal albums, or i guess it would be best and worst albums from a death metal band bc "I" isn't death metal
Great video bro.
I was lucky to see Necrophagist Live along with Suffocation, Black Guard, Ensiferum, Decrepit Birth ; summer slaughter 2009 at NYC. Imo it was the last good summer slaughter tour.
Good times 🤘🏽
Saw them at summer slaughter in the beginning I'll always hold out for a return! Even if it's just touring and no new album I'd be stoked
Hey man, your channel is great! I hope you get bigger eventually. 🤘
motivation is such a huge factor in a bands drive to continue, more so when its the founding or core members so its totally understandable that the album will almost certainly never see the light of day. But hey we can all keep our fingers crossed.
Underrated band, underrated RUclipsr. Dropped a sub
Good channel. Glad to have found it.
Obscura is definitely the most similar band to Necrophagist. Nice video by the way. From time to time I come back to the internet to search for Necrophagist news, at this point I really think they're never releasing anything else ever.
Subbed for sure. Was wondering why so few subs vs the quality of the content, then noticed channel isn't even a year old. Keep it up man
Cheers mate! Haha i'll keep trying to grow, it's a lot harder than i thought!
Thank you for this video. I will text here from two account just because i want to up this video. I am loving Necrophagist and doing it all my life)))
Thanks a lot, mate!
Wife and job that pays more than metal. We miss you Muhammad.
we may never get another necrophagist album but ill never give up on necrophagist
Great video. Thanks for summarizing this!
Thanks for this video and your commentary. Long live necrophagist and Muhammed Suicmez! Wish we could see the third album :(
Great video, I hope your channel grows quickly.
i think its pronounced necro-fay-jist
Correct
muhammed said the literal way to pronounce it is “necro-fah-gist” but also said that any way is correct
Mohammed explained that the word Necrophagist comes from a dead language that no longer exists. He said that there is no right way to pronounce it.
The letter G could be hard like 'guard' or soft like 'giraffe'. And the letter A can be pronounced hard like 'game' or soft like 'cigarette'. That means there could be at least 4 correct ways to pronounce it.... 💯
@@ChucksterOLove Thanks man if only you could respond to every single person saying i'm pronouncing it wrong haha!
Either way this way sounds better and it’s what I’ve been calling them for years.
hey brother just a heads up the "g" in "Necrophagist" is soft
like how it is in "phage", which means "eater"
"necrophagist" is "eater of the dead"
I've heard it pronounced 3 different ways by members of the band itself
when i was in high school back at 2004, i saw this album and bought not knowing the band at the time, and i was blown away…. still one of my top 10 best records of tech death metal of all time…also influenced my guitar playing like a lot!!!!!!!
This really goes to show how much record labels fuck up the music industry
One of my favorite bands. Insane guitar work and songs always wondered why the never put out more. Sometimes a statement like making only those few albums makes them that much better. Great video on the band and other bands to check out in the genre. Thanks and hail!
Yeah definitely, I think their legacy and the mystique surrounding the band will remain fully intact this way.
Thank you for your input!! this has been a huge burning question for me for years. Cheers bro.
Spiral Architect's second album and Necrophagist's 3rd album.
the legacy Mohammad left is enourmous, he influenced a generation, beautiful video btw, most metal videos i've seen don't have this almost documentary quality and don't really meddle in the history of more "modern" bands (epitaph has been out for almost 20 years) cause it's not *TrUe MeTaL*, as a fan of bands like beyond creation, fallujah and archspire thank you so much for shedding some light on this absolute legend
Appreciate that, mate!
Awesome video bro. Let's hope for that third album, we're starving out here.
Besides Necrophagist, I'd say Spawn of Possession were also really, REALLY, influential to the wave of Tech Death that followed both bands. They didn't get the exposure Necrophagist did, but anyone playing Tech Death these days will more than likely tell you they were a big influence on them.
Listening to their Incurso album because of this comment, and it’s SO damn good 🔥
"Stabwound" was my breakthrough song to move forward from bands like Devildriver, Lamb of God, and Slipknot. After hearing Stabwound, i immediately listened to every necrophagist song i could get my hands on (all 15 of them). I haven't looked back, and Epitaph is still in constant rotation on my playlists. Hour of Penance and Exmortus are 2 bands fans of necrophagist should check out as well.
It's kind of shitty how Muhammed has talent that 99.9% of guitarists would only dream about and chooses not to use it.
This might sound crazy, it could all be a hallucination or a lie, but I swear this album was online once and I downloaded it from a P2P site only to delete it later without realizing how insanely rare it was about to be. It had like 10 tracks and the first one is called "Pain is God". I think the cover art was in a fuzzy black and white art style. That is all I remember. Hopefully someone else has some living memory of the third album existing and being available for a minute back in the day?
I remember around 2012 or 13 I found a single by them that released a few years earlier here on youtube. And I remember thinking to myself how on earth I missed that. It really sounded like Necrophagist and also I was'nt so impressed thinking just like suggested here in the video that they can't match the original anymore. Months later I tried to find the same song again but I couldn't. I truely believe it was by them but also I might be mistaken. specially knowing that there always been false rumers about their new release here on the internet.
I came across the same lp online on a blog about 10 yrs ago, me and some friends came to the conclusion it wasn't necrophagist, I don't remember the bands name but that album with pain is God on was from an original band, probably inspired by necrophagist
@@bhunivelze420 Oh for sure. That actually makes pretty simple sense.
I believe this is the band "Deadborn" where that song is from, but indeed I remember that it was shared here and there as the new Necrophagist album.
I’ve heard that the 3rd album was on RUclips or online years back around the early 2010s, but no one I’ve seen online has said any solid proof of it.
Such a shame that we don’t get to experience any more of Muhammad Suicmez’ absolute genius. And I use the word genius very literally. I’d be fascinated to know more about the guy, and his interests, career in Engineering, etc. I like to think he’d dig my old E46 M3 as well as my Spotify list 😆
great video, man, very well summarized. i really appreciate the varied vocabulary used in your script- youre very well spoken. my ONLY critique is regarding the Metal Health title music... its *SOOO LOUD!* if you edit these yourself, next time around, just be sure to balance your intro music more closely to the peak of your spoken audio, as i cant be the only viewer that scrambled to adjust their volume at 00:10, heh. that being said, thank you much for the video-- have a safe holiday season!
Thanks man, really appreciate the feedback. And yeah I'll definitely dip the volume on the intro; I think you're right haha!
Another worthy mention would be Grossmanns solo project. Espacially „To Sow the Seeds of Earth“ sounds so much like Necro.
First Fragment mentioned!!!! I have to say that if you're watching this video i'm sure you will love Gloire Eternelle album.
Can't imagine if they making new album and tour with Archspire
Nevrophagist was the band that got me into modern death metal. Before I heard them I didn’t appreciate the vocals but the music was so good that I couldn’t stop listening to them. After a short time death metal vocals became something I love. And as a guitarist they are one of my biggest influences.
If you like Necrophagist I recommend:
Obscura
First Fragment
A Loathing Requiem
Spawn of Possession
Beyond Creation
& Archspire 😎🤘
Psycroptic, Alarum
Haven't listened to A Loathing Requiem, will definitely give a try.
Obscura has always been boring to me 💀
At this point, I'd be happier if the album never came out and we had a concrete answer to all of our questions. We need that closure. Stranger things have happened then a long awaited album dropping out of nowhere though.
The band formerly known as necrophagist
Actually there was a band like them but before them they were pioneering as well called Theory in Practice, Also two other killer bands that were kind of pioneering and flourishing at that time and did more albums we're Into Eternity and Biomechanical . And it's a shame that both these bands were at again the peak of their careers and then just kind of fizzled out several years later for reasons unclear unfortunately
Theory In Practice is leagues above everyone else
I hope if necrofagist ever release a new album they use 7 strings cause they were all over the fretboard on the first 2 albums and those were just 6 strings, so it be cool to see them utilize the 7 string.
All the bands that have come after Necrophagist also would make any new material from them less important. When Necro first came out that style was still pretty fresh and since then we have tons of progressive death metal bands. I love Epitaph and I'm glad I got to see them live at the Summer Slaughter tour in Dallas.
Assuming recording is finished and it just needs a mix if not a master or modern remaster, the man is sitting on a gold mine and yet he cares more about his career and following other passions.
You have to hand it to him, that is a superhuman level of humility and integrity.
Found necrophagist about 12 years ago.. and still listen to epitaph album ! Seems every winter i go hunting guitar covers on youtube to see who can get solos spot on . Love those solos 👌

Though I've never been into tech death, I certainly share many of your musical tastes like most things you quote on your other vids, so gotta check Necrophagist and give it a try.
Dude, that wish list in the end of your video was on point, never had someone yearning the same album releases, so sad but comforting.

That's amazing, man! So nice to hear, you and your wife have great taste in metal then haha! I just have this one account, I'll continue to try and grow the channel but it's certainly harder than i first thought!
I’ve seen someone comment on another video that back in the early 2010s the 3rd album was leaked early on the website Grooveshark but was taken off shortly after
I'm gonna put the most common comment when it comes to Necrophagist on your vid.
" Half life 3 of Metal "
Such a pity they are not around anymore.

Dude Neuraxis was in one of those fliers! Always wondered what happened to them too
Also dude I wish you would have recommended Hannes's solo albums too and not just the Obscura stuff haha. IMO Hannes is the greatest techdeath composer ever.
Probably should have done, mate 😅
@@MetalHealthTV Haha it's no biggie yo :) I just feel as a drummer he gets all the rightfully deserved praise in the world and a lot of people love his songwriting of course with Obscura and Alkaloid and even his solo stuff but when people talk about him usually it's as a drummer and not a songwriter because of his mega madman chops. I feel like one of the few people where when I bring Hannes up it's usually the other way around XD He's such a massive influence on me personally through his compositions.

I remember Necrophagist in my top 5 in the death metal genre when I was heavy in it 2006-2010 personally. I was frantically searching for more bands like them like Decrepid birth, Decapitated, Behemoth but nothing filled that void that I so much needed for more Necrophagist. The late 90s death metal bands were kinda getting old too. I felt like the guys in Necro were just doing a fun project and moved on. Also, it's hazy but I think I saw Necrophagist during one of those summer slaughters or something like that.
The Faceless did help haha
Anata, Psycroptic, Defeated sanity Deeds of Flesh, unique leader records hell back in those times there was a ton of tech death on that label
Ihsahn self title album is better probably why
Rodney Mullen just went back to skate man
So there's a chance
Would love to hear what Muhammed had in mind for the 3rd record, maybe it's the same as the first 2 albums or is something different and he's afraid it will upset some fans either which way.
Yeah i think that will play into his thinking! I'd love to hear the direction he went in...
That Caladan Brood drop x'D. Another ground breaking Symphonic Black Metal band \m/
The third album has been recorded since 2008. However, it will never be released because Muhammed breached the contract he had with Relapse Records since 2004 of some albums for separating the band in 2010. So Relapse Records as a result of this, they stayed with the name of the band. Contract and business stuff, nothing personal. I hope that if one day he returns to play and create music, he will do it from deathcore since he has a lot to contribute in deathcore world and also to be more successful being independent. I hope this helps 🙇♂️. Bleesings and good vibes ❤️
The Faceless' Planetary Duality was a good filler after these albums for me but before and after are a mess.
Planetary Duality is one of the few albums at first listen thought could give Epitaph a run for its money
The Faceless helped feel that void for me too. I actually like Alkedama, the song Pestilence was like a meme for me and my friends for some reason.
"we love this band so much lets break into the frontman's house and steal his shit"

Muhammed, to me, is that once in a lifetime musician where anything he releases would have been top tier. The third album would have been amazing, Too bad everything worked against him and his band to where he gave up. I'll always secretly hope for a comeback but it's been 18 years since Epitaph and Muhammed is pushing 50. I don't think it'll ever happen.
Yeah it is definitely unlikely we will ever hear it if it truly does exist.

Never saw on market the last album mentioned of THE ZENITH PASSAGE : there are 2 CD from them only ... I think you can add almost in this list the ARTISAN ERA catalog too : Inferi , INANMATE EXISTENCE ... and not forgetting ARKAIK. I think there was 3rd album already written because of my friend met Muhammed like around 15 years ago and they discussed it. AFAIK Muhammed is extremely perfectionist person and since a lot of technical band emerged ...maybe he is affraid to disappoint. It remind me situation with Dissection when the King Jon Nodveidt came back , situation was different after his jail , and Reinkaos did not meet the expectation. I am bit affraid that it could happen with Necrophagist.
necrophagist released epitaph and i haven’t heard anything like it since
I've got a hunch that Necrophagist grew to being a legend not just because of their music but also because they quit. They never disappointed with their next album. So they became a constant to compare other music to.
Sadly, even if the market wasn't so saturated, Extreme Metal has never been (and probably never will be) a money-maker. If there's any corporate legal nonsense happening behind the scenes, it would simply be not worth the trouble in my eyes.
'Seven' is such a great song! That opening riff, man...
Great video, please do YATTERING! PLEASE!
Homie really hit necrophagist with a hard G

Great fucking video man. Thank you 🤘😍
Great video! I recently started listening to Archspire so it’s nice to have more bands to look into.
Thanks a lot man, glad you found some more cool bands!
The answer is simple. Being in the music industry was destroying his love for music. So he quit touring so he could still enjoy music and going to shows. He's very smart, can make many many ways. He clearly doesn't crave affirmation. He knows he dropped 2 perfect records. End on the highest note and let the legend build. Genius.
They need to just release the third album as "Necrophagist A.D.'" follow in Entombed A.D.s footsteps. I understand wanting to leave a mark as legend instead of fading into obscurity. Sucks, but i get it.
He making big revolution
If he's really a senior engineer at BMW he probably makes around €80,000 a year
Makes sense he would give up being in a band
Way way more than that, brah. That's low-level engineering pay.
