    Before we get more "you didn't play the original so how can you review this!?!" comments, this review is from a new player's perspective for potential first time buyers. If you want a detailed analysis on visual upgrades, there's plenty of other reviews for that.

    • @KArchine
      @KArchine 2 года назад +5

      Personally, I think that is fair. If this was a bigger departure from the original, I'd suggest it should be somewhat alongside. But when it really is only a graphics overhaul, it is more 'do the new graphics work on a remaster' not 'how much better than the original are they'.
      Though that is only my humble take on it 😊

    • @deebzscrub
      @deebzscrub 2 года назад +7

      Oh you didn't know? You can't have an opinion on one game unless you've played every game that has ever existed!

      Tbh if you played the original you'd know if you'd want to buy the remaster. The combat is so grindy and annoying.
      I'd rather play Alan Wakes American Nightmare than the original. The enemy and weapon variation make the original look bland as hell.

      Will this in some way end up becoming a Slightly Something Else topic? Like, reviewers not needing to research every possible thing about a game prior to making a review of it (or something along those lines)

  • @UnreasonableOpinions
    @UnreasonableOpinions 2 года назад +42

    The references go so hard they even have an entire 90s novel published as a part of the collector's edition, so yes, it's VERY on purpose. The plot's only so-so, but an a matter of executing the plot it excels.

  • @davidbamposo4575
    @davidbamposo4575 2 года назад +48

    Nice review! But I would like to point out that I dont believe this game is a survival horror. It strikes me more as a thriller than anything else, something we actually dont see that much in games. Its not very scary, but the atmosphere is haunting and the plot leaves you on the edge of your seat. Even Remedy themselves said the game was a "psychological thriller" back when it was released.
    Knowing that is good to keep expectations in check.

    • @jakubspacekspajdy7270
      @jakubspacekspajdy7270 2 года назад +2

      psychological action thriller, it is not survival, by any means, it can create that weird tension for first time players, who does not know what to expect

    • @franzfanz
      @franzfanz 2 года назад +6

      He probably classified it as survival horror because psychological thriller really is more of a TV/movie genre than a game genre. Which is basically how the game is structured and plays out.

    • @davidbamposo4575
      @davidbamposo4575 2 года назад

      @@franzfanz Yeah I get that, but when people say its X genre, others will expect something that maybe the game wasnt aiming to deliver in the first place.
      But I see how he may have struggled to find a term for it, I did not want to be harsh on him, this review is quite good. I'm just pointing how some games cannot easly be fit in a genre.

    • @quaza2001
      @quaza2001 2 года назад +1

    • @VonFreklstein
      @VonFreklstein 2 года назад +2

      Yeah that description fits the bill a lot better. A good psychological thriller can be quite horrifying if done right though. E.g. se7en or shutter island.

  • @3ndlessL00p

    Fun fact, when the original game was released for Xbox 360, Remedy sent a copy of it to Stephen King as a way of saying thanks for all the inspiration. King was thankful, though he didn't end up playing it, as he didn't own an Xbox 360 system (and probably hasn't bothered to get one since then).

    Personal take, yes the references are intentional. I appreciate the reviews uncertainty but (SPOILER)
    The fact you are writing the story you are escaping, and you are a successful 90 era author in the game, lead me to not only believe it is designed as a parody of 90s horror writing, but it is infact a perfect representation of it.

    Oh cool - i just finished Control and all it's DLC today and loved it! It was nice seeing how Alan Wake ties into it. I'd be tempted to get this to remind myself of everything that happened in it, but i dunno - i wasnt super keen on the original when i played and finished it back in the day. I didnt find it that scary, and the combat got a bit samey. I guess i just wanted another Silent Hill too much hehe

    • @tylergarrett8066
      @tylergarrett8066 2 года назад +1

      On the plus side, it's only 30 dollars so it's relatively affordable compared to a full price new release. I can definitely see where the combat gets a bit stale but the atmosphere and pacing are pretty good if that's your cup of tea. I'm a little biased as it is a personal favorite of mine from back when I was a kid. All comes down to whether the visual improvements are worth the price to you.

    • @NuclearAbyss
      @NuclearAbyss 2 года назад

      Its only $30 and its way better than on 360. It runs at 4k or close and 60fps, alan wake its all about the story tho.

    • @Hermaticlus
      @Hermaticlus 2 года назад +1

      I would say it' a confirmation that Alan Wake 2 is in development and is Remedys next game. They release the remaster now so that old fans gets to refresh their memories of the story in preparation for the sequel. And get even more people invested that have not yet played it. The timing of this release is so off that it can't be anything else. The game was 10 last year so it's no anniversary thingy tobgive you an example.

    • @NuclearAbyss
      @NuclearAbyss 2 года назад

      I wouldn't pare control and alan wake as the same. Its been rumoured that epic is funding and will publish alan wake 2. All of this has been rumours tho, but everything seems to be pointing to it.
      Originally xbox owned the rights to alan wake, but they didn't do anything with it.
      Control was published by 404 and has a contract with remedy to publish the ip control for 10 years.
      Right as Remedy announced that control was getting dlc and one was named AWE (alternate world event) people speculate that is would be Alan Wake Event. Durning that time the rights for alan wake reverted back to Remedy and in fact the AWE dlc was about alan wake, witch tied in both games. Then rumors of AW2 being published by epic and AW remastered started, suddenly we get AW remastered. So everything points to AW2, but epic and 404 games are publishing different ip.

      Both yes and no I would say. It depends on if you feel like playing it again. The biggest update is updated facemodels with better animations which adds quite alot in my opinion. Other than that I would say that you will probably get the feeling that it kind of looks the same as it did before. But there is actually quite big difference in texture and detail quality of you put them side by side. I'd say that if you are actually in the mood of playing through the story again you should play this version. But you probably shouldn't play it just because it is a remaster if you get my point.

    3. Game constantly shifts player position on you, trying to force a certain view down your throat. Always clicking down on right stick to fix.
