  • Hey everybody, in part a response video to some friends, as well as perhaps generating further discussion overall, and, as I said here...this raises more questions than coming to any conclusions...then again, it's all impermanent and transitory anyway, so it seems appropriate enough. :-)
Besides ‪@dulles1969‬ and ‪@bufoperiglenes8634‬ I neglected to also mention ‪@radishraven9‬ and ‪@olderinfpinsights‬ Another couple of lovely folks who do videos in comparable territory. Thanks as ever for tuning in!

Good evening Cuz Carm. Jeez. I can honestly say that I never expected you to do a video on stuff. Better still. I never imagined myself looking at stuff in a food for thought manner. Let me just say that I have always had a certain amount of stuff that had to come with me on pretty much every outing. Whether it be digging for records or taking off for the weekend down the Cape. Certain stuff would be packed in my backpack. I can remember years ago when I was about thirteen or fourteen. Right around the time of the release of Houses of the Holy. > I can remember certain dates better when I relate them to my favorite album releases. {smile} < Anyways. I remember my cousin hopping on his Harley and heading down to Virginia Beach. No change of clothes. No suitcase. Just a few bottles of water and the clothes on his back. I thought that it was one of the coolest things I ever saw. I could not figure out how anyone could just hop on their motorcycle and just take off with no worries in the world. I on the other hand would have started to pack my bags five days before I even left. With all kinds of 'stuff'. Really enjoyed this one Carm. It was very cool. Plenty of food for thought. Very positive and enlightening~

Hey cuz Rob, It was fun doing something a bit different here. I do know that inclination...having quite specific items with you when going certain places. I find that admirable about your cousin too, traveling light indeed.
Yes, also that too, marking dates according to notable album releases. Yes though, we all have our certain ways of preparing for an outing and figuring what is needed versus what is wanted. Well thanks as ever for being here. Hope your own endless summer is on the horizon soon. 🙂 Peace n love. -Carm

As I glean more Truth of the realities and lies permeating this temporal world (prep school), all material possessions hold less interest and value, while my spiritual walk gains more faith, peace, contentment, joy, fulfillment and understanding (despite potentially assumed appearances) with growingly less need or desire for material things. In time all the things of this Earth which we held of value will be worthless. Our souls are more precious than material wealth and possessions of course. Though the music hobby has provided lifelong enjoyment it can't fill the void which God or one's extracurricular assigned mission replaces it with. When anything takes precedence over our love and focus on God in our lives, we have a serious problem that needs correcting quickly, as we may die in our sleep. I've mused your same thoughts here Carm with my own nostalgia, sentimentality and daily strive to mentally prepare should the ride suddenly end. Consider Job's #1 focus on God with no Earthy possessions or idols above God, hence his ability to have much wealth easily, without it being the slightest hindrance to him, and God brought him even more after holding firm in his great tests, while even his wife tried to get him to curse God! Wonderful to see your recognition here as presented Carm. Thanks for sharing brother! :-)

Hey Jeff, such beautiful and fitting thoughts/feelings here. It's true, we "don't take it with us", or that which we do take to the next place may be that which is the one thing always carried within us all along, well beyond the objects whether comforting and heartening on one hand, or status-driven for others. We somehow return to what's basic. Great to hear from you on this. Much further discussion on this for sure. 🙂 Thanks as always! P,L,&J. -Carm & Meena

Carm, usually I take a good amount of time to reply to your videos. This time was different. I immediately thought of the Miles Davis tune,'' Stuff'' from the ''Miles In The Sky'' album, recorded in 1968. It is one of my all-time favorite listens. ''Stuff'' is the only tune on the album, on which Ron Carter plays electric bass and Herbie Hancock plays electric piano. Herbie was reluctant to play the electric piano, but Miles insisted on it. When I first bought the album as a teen, I endlessly wondered what Miles was referring to, in the title,'' Stuff''. I made a tape of that song along with songs by other artists. When I raked leaves or shovelled snow, I always played that tune on my Walkman.

Haha, well I'm glad this all evoked...something for you here, Michael! 🙂 You have me really wanting to hear that tune/album now too. You're reminding me too, something I used to often listen to on my own walkman while shoveling snow in particular, was Tomita's 'Snowflakes are Dancing'....appropriately enough. Thanks as ever. -Carm

You've got such a fun lane to swim in Carm -- your knowledge of music is encyclopedic, that's before going into your (IMO) very healthy outlook on life. If you like and recommend an artist, I find it's worth a listen. Just the Klaus Schulze library(...!) Will be working on that for a long time to come.
It is hard to feel out and conclude what it means to lose or say goodbye to things! To your point about having nothing but what's in your heart and memories, a wise and thoughtful sentiment... For decades, I had a big box of collected personal letters and cards, going back to high school and college. Then about five years ago ... just pitched it into recycling. My wife had been pressuring me to get rid of it. But it was my decision: Time to part ways with the physical artifacts. The people -- who we were when we wrote to each other -- were important. The words on paper might've been a bridge, but it's really about the memories of who we were at a certain time and place, whether those memories are now accurate or distorted.
And while I've named myself after an airport that in turn named itself after a founder of the CIA (not a well-considered move), I am actually a Brian. And I'm very glad that we met -- someone in the community some time ago found and recommended your channel and it's great to follow.

Hey Dulles..er..Brian... ☺Very interesting about all that, and thank you for a large part of the inspiration here. Ahh....it really is...a fun lane to swim in with the videos I normally do, though honestly, I don't know much of anything else, so it's probably safer for me there too. 😉
Oh gosh, one could explore Klaus endlessly! His catalog is so vast...
Very moving about that with the letters and cards, and with letting go, recognizing that which always stays with you regardless. I'm not quite there yet, as I have a couple envelopes full of a couple dozen letters from a dearly departed friend I like to keep nearby....even if going a good long time between looking at them. Yes though, however the memories are manifested, at least there's those.
Same here, so good meeting you, sister Bufo P...quite a few kindred souls....whether we're the same "personality types" or not. 🙂 Thanks as always. -Carm

I enjoy my stuff and belongings. Could I do without it? I guess, but not willingly. I've worked hard to keep and maintain a certain lifestyle, so there's no need to dispose of all that now. We live in America, which is a capitalistic, materialistic system, which doesn't mean you have to buy or own a lot of things, but I don't mind. Do I find owning things a burden, no not really. Some guys might like to hunt, go fishing, golf, etc. etc. I don't do any of that. I like to collect stuff and enjoy listening to music, reading books, watching tube, so that's my thing. I think living out of a carry-all would be a burden.

So nice seeing you again, and surprised to see a new video since I know work has picked up. I recall Carlin's 'A Place For My Stuff' so well. I originally bought the LP for my sister the Christmas after it came out all those years ago. Fast forward a few decades and I ended up buying her the CD many years later.
Once again. I love the view and your little corner of the world. These tight spaces always appealed to me.
By the way I caught a comment regard Miles Davis' 'Stuff' tune from the late 1960's. Well in the early 1980's I spent 2+ years listening to almost nothing except Miles' music from this period (1962 up to around1968) and I know the track 'Stuff' quite well. So here it is-Miles-trumpet, Wayne Shorter-saxophone, Herbie Hancock-electric piano, Ron Carter-electric bass(!), Tony Williams-drums

For sure Michael! 'Stuff' is one of the less harmonically dense things from that period-it's fun and it works, and is something very different from the other music made by that 2nd Quintet, much of which is VERY difficult, intellectual, and kind of obscure thematically...

Loved this video, Carm! These are things I’ve thought about many times. The older I get the less materialistic I get, and I’ve never been that materialistic to start with. I could relatively easily dispense with everything I own except my classical guitar and Wordsworth’s “The Prelude” and be perfectly happy. I’ve always been able to make my own music anytime I want, and “The Prelude” reads as if I wrote it, it resonates with me so much. All of this sounds very narcissistic, I imagine…me, me, me. But I am just a very independent and self-contained type of person. Of course I want friends and family around me, but left on my own, I have never been bored. Anyway, great topic, and I really appreciate your approach to such things. Cheers! Jeff

      @gorvo31  Год назад

Hey thanks much, Jeff! I could definitely see that with you....Someone who knows what's really meaningful to you and what you would deem as truly enough material-wise. I suppose I'm materialistic in a certain sense though not another....more of a sentimental association sense than an object fetish or status-symbol way.
That very statement really resonates with me though in and of itself, about 'The Prelude' reading as if you wrote it, yes! I feel that way very much so about 'Don't Push the River' and 'Burst out Laughing' by Barry Stevens. Like reading my own thoughts from moment to moment there, just much more intelligent, eloquent and coherent than I.
Also what you said about not being easily bored at all alone....It took me years to convince my dear late friend who I visited for many years in Arizona that I wasn't bored there amidst all that stark beauty....since I was spending so much time sitting or walking alone doing nothing, it looked like I wasn't having a good time..though I really was! It's just that my outward demeanor has always been rather....placid, ha.
I'm going to experiment and really look for some essential things to fill that bag with and honestly as myself "Is this all and am I content?" 🙂 Thanks as always, my friend. -Carm

Hi Carm… great topic for discussion. I like the exercise of if I had to fill a gym bag/ suitcase and that’s all I could have I wonder what I would take. Definitely music, books framed photos that mean a lot to me. Perhaps a journal to write and some of my fav movies, tv series etc. . It’s definitely an interesting question as to what means the most to us. I have often thought what if something happened to my cds and records like say a flood or fire and they were all destroyed. How would I rebuild my collection. Would I only start with what means the most to me plus my favourites or would I replace all of it ? Thanks for this video and question Carm. Have a great week ! I'm going to try that soon for fun, with seeing if I could fill that bag with some very favorite items and see how I feel, looking at those. Neat hearing of what you'd pack yourself. Mine would be similar. Yes too...I didn't even go into that: how we'd rebuild our collections if at all if one had lost everything. I wonder if at the least I'd wait a while and see how it felt with just that space and openness for a while before looking to buy anything back again. Hey Brother Carm,
I am glad to see this , and an sorry to be such a ghost lately. It has been a year of getting up to speed and adjustment in my professional life. It all matters , our stuff is very important. And at once completely trivial. Incongruity is a part of the madness we are initiated into. Oh yeah, my wife and I got a cat Barney, a couple of months back, he is adjusting from a nervous nelly to a more trusting soul little by little , it has been a joy to see him transform. He was a stray that we picked up at the shelter , he is about 2 yrs old (apparently) . he gets loads of play and love, and treats .... we love him. Thought you would like to know that. Today I was thinking about messing with synths, and finding this on my YT feed will make me do the very thing.
As is mentioned in other comments you are appreciated, the vibe is calm and it feels warm and welcoming.
It has always been a main attraction for me. I hope all is well and one of these nights I will have to do a random crash pad

I really do not have any except the Bible and maybe a few Christian books. Lately I have realized I will soon be 71 years old and before I know it I could be 90 years old in 19 years. It bothers me greatly realizing how I do find comfort or security in stuff when I know deep down they mean nothing in the light of eternity. When I die I will go to Heaven with nothing but my love for the Lord Jesus/

I come from a long line of hoarders, so I am always very conscious and burdened by the amount of stuff I have, but also come from a household that went through close to a bankruptcy so having STUFF is also important. I also think, what happens if there is a fire - which is one reason why I keep going back to trying to build up my digital library, photos in the computer, etc - because that I could get down to an object that is the size of a deck of cards, duplicate and save it in multiple places, and have ALL my stuff and still really only one thing - my digital collection. Even that, I curate and edit - I used to keep books but I move them along now - and also have a digital library as well so they are safe with me, but not burdening my space. But, a digital book isn't a book, a file isn't a record, and a screenshot isn't a polaroid.

Hi Carm - good thought... when you have nothing / nothing to worry about . . . but even after losing lots of possessions in the forest fire, I never really had nothing as I saved a lot of "stuff" before the fire got there. So as normal, stuff tends to overwhelm me, which is why vandwelling didn't work well for me, in part, plus I like the security of having a home base apparently. I need that peacefulness in order to have peace of mind for creativity. If I had to travel light I'd take my phone, not my Bible. The Bible is heavy! The phone is lightweight and contains a Bible app with dozens of versions. I'm practical that way. I don't even take my Bible to church because it weighs so much, and the phone suffices.

Hey Linda, Oh yes it sounds like you've been through so much in terms of living situations over the years and deciding what's important/essential material-wise. I certainly see the practicality of the bible on your phone for traveling to whatever extent. I must say, even not being much of a phone person to begin with, even a quarter of the way into this century I'm using it less and less...getting back to pre digital basics as I age and come full circle. Have you ever seen those Shambhala pocket books? They're tiny and really do fit in the pocket. I'm wondering if they have a version of the bible, in case one got tired of the screen and wanted the book book. Anyhow, it's great to hear from you, and I must catch up further soon. Thanks much for being here! -Carm

Hello Carm Just passing through again, interesting video. Collecting stuff is interesting in itself, because you have all these things that you use over time, then it breaks, goes to the permanent holding area, either the garage, or that special place in your house where unseen residuals rest until they chemically break down the rest of the way, and spiders build nests in LOL When we moved the last time we seriously took into consideration where some stuff that we had not looked at in years was going, either to the junk yard or a yard sale. I must say though, if money were not an object, I would get a few more pieces of synth hardware, that would be the only thing I would think of collecting. When you ponder this over, as yourself, you rather become more aware of how important or not some stuff actually is. The adage that you can't take it with you when you pass away does cross the mind from time to time, well, I guess that's why we have wills, so we can pass stuff on to a fortunate survivor 🙂 Enjoyed the video! Take care, cheers!

Hey Wiley, Thanks much. Yes....in a sense our dwellings become like these museums for items that we just never getting around to parting with, and the older and older relic quality makes us often want to hang on to it until one can no longer stand it, ha.
I'd probably do the same, music-related stuff if one didn't need to worry about money.
Indeed, we can't take it with us, plus we can soak up the very best of it all while we're still here. Thanks as always for joining me. Hope all's well your way. -Carm

Hi Carm, This was such a timely video ! I am of a certain age,and recently I've been taking stock of all my "Stuff". A friend of mine has an aging Mom and has the task of cleaning out her house. After seeing her "hoard", I decided to purge my collections. My sons have no interest in inheriting my dolls, and Christmas ornament collections. They told me, " Mom, when your gone we're donating everything, or throwing it out". I don't do eBay,or garage sales,so... I've been very busy donating to my local Thrift shop. Yes, I'm extremely sentimental, and memories are attached to many objects. For two months now I've been going through my collections. I get rid of things that I know someone else might enjoy. I've saved a lot, but I will reevaluate again. I have many albums,Cd's, dvd's, books, and other collections. There's also "Things" from my kids childhood that I have a hard time parting with. I don't like to think I'm "materialistic" as much as I feel I'm extremely sentimental, and Nostalgic. I have interests in too many subjects, which leads to the collecting. It does feel exhilarating to have a cleaner appearance, and more space in our home, and I like to think that my donations bring joy to others,it helps with the process. Please do more videos like this, I enjoy your thoughts on subjects such as this.Let us know if you were able to part with some of your "Stuff" ! Happiness always, Cindy😊🦋

Hey there Cindy! It's wonderful hearing all the various perspectives on this, and yours is particularly inspiring. Yes, being in a state of continuously reevaluating as one goes, and valuing the things we want to keep more for nostalgia/special place in our heart, rather than merely materialistic or as status symbols or fetish objects, so to speak. For sure...our respective interests can lead to lots of collecting, and knowing where to draw that line whenever at all, is an ongoing process. All the best with your own!
By the way...off the subject, the other night I had a dream that I visited Tink and you were there too! I mean, how I imagined you since I've never known what you look like. Though you had a strawberry blonde pixie cut....Is that close, or was my dreaming self way off? Ha!
Anyhow, I really do want to visit her and hopefully meet yourself along the way.
Thanks so much for sharing and being here....and the encouragement to do more of these kinds of videos. Certanily as they come up. Much love and happiness! -Carm & Meena

@@gorvo31 Good Morning Carm ! Reading your comment really made me smile ! The thought of us meeting up with Tink is as she would say, "Magical" ! Our precious Tink is going through a tough time and the loss of a loved one is indefinite. I strongly believe we will see our loved ones again in the other life. yes, it's curious to how we picture our friends who leave comments. You really channeled me ! I have Blonde hair (not strawberry) I had a "Pixie Cut" when I was little ! Your dream sounds like so much fun ! It's funny what our subconscious delivers in our dreams ! That would be another great Carm discussion ! Thanks for thinking of me, and making me smile ! Love, and Happiness, Cindy☺
