Miniature painter here - For your mini you, I'd strongly suggest another round of highlights on the flesh, mainly the brow, nose and chin and then an ultra matt varnish, as that will bring the scheme together more, and not make the hoodie highlights look as stark. Excellent project, I'm really enjoying it

Another fascinating video, warts and all. On soldering, a decent iron will do. Mine is 25W and works well for most jobs, even 7mm etched brass kits. Yes, flux is essential. Electrical solder usually comes cored with Rosin but if yours is uncored you can get Rosin separately, this is my preferred method. Here's a tip, get some brass wool and dip the iron tip in it frequently. Your tip needs to be kept shiny and clean. If the tip is black, it is done. Great piece on painting ModelU figures. I didn't realize there was a section on painting in the catalog. My results are OK and I've used black wash to finish. The idea of using Titanium Buff struck a chord and I have a tube on order already. I will mention that on my current layout, I used Woodland Scenics foam roadbed. It comes in bevelled strips and sheets. I also use Ayleen's Tacky Glue (which I believe to be equivalent to WS Scenic Glue) to fix the foam to the board and the track to the foam. Looking forward top the next installment. John

Hi Andy, great progress! I cannot remember the name of it but Charlie at Chadwick (and myself now) uses solder with the flux already mixed in. I think it’s called 70/30. I visited SDR for the first time last month. What a fantastic location to have on your doorstep.

Keep up the great work AND your very explanatory descriptions of each of the MANY and varied tasks. I particularly liked the ModelU - very realistic - almost like "Honey, I shrunk the kids!" Great stuff. Though I think some of the exhibition layouts you showed could benefit from getting some inspiration from you, rather than the other way round! Glad you found a workable solution to the board ends. My one suggestion would be to be able to fix some protection to the rail ends when the sections are separated: it's very easy to snag them with clothes or otherwise twang them - think of something like a blanking plate for the ends.

Another wonderful film loved it from start to finish, I was getting a bit worried as it had been such a long time since your last video. For a good electrical connection, you should always use flux even if you get the solder to stick you could end up with a dry joint. I loved the finished ModelU figure I have a few of these to do so seeing how you approached this was very interesting. By the way, your landscaping skills are truly epic. Keep this up.

Great update, I thought you had disappeared :O But I'm glad you're back, interesting way to join the tracks etc, I take it you're going to hide the welds etc on the joins?
I must be the only person who enjoys ballasting then, especially when there are no points ! 😂 Something i found worked well to dirty the ballast was once it was down, i mixed up some black weathering powder and cheap black acrylic with iso and mixed it to a really thin colour, then literally grabbed a brush and went around the track. random pigments get caught up naturally and you get a general weathering down of the stone. The iso doesnt hang around long enough to cause any issue on glue etc and a track cleaner gets it shiny again. Careful when ballasting the points... Absolute nightmare if you rush 😂 Can someone fill me in with why the screws are used on the track joins??
Thanks for the ballasting tip. I think that will be good way for me to go so will pick up some iso as I don't have any at the moment. Sorry, I didn't explain the brass screw part very well as I was fed up at that point! It's just to have something solid to solder the rails to to avoid it moving if it gets knocked during transit.
Just found your channel today. Looks like you're building something similar to me (www.youtube.com/@FrontingtonandBackwoodsRailway), though perhaps with slightly more skill and budget! I too tried soldering my track to screw heads, and also ran into the issue of my screws not being brass. I ended up just gluing the track firmly either side of the join, and that's worked fine so far. You've done well with those scenics though, I'll be taking some inspiration from that!
