This layout is a work of art. It is not how we wish the world to be, nor is it how we nostalgically remember the world to be, it is very much how the world actually was. Having lived through this period of the railway I really appriciate the honest and accurate approach. Great tour, great update, and look forward to many more videos!!!
This layout is the best in the country. More people need to realise this. This channel deserves 1 million subscribers! Also Richard is the cleverest modeller out there!
@JosephByrne My Grandad was a Guard on British Rail in the late 70s to the early 80s, he told me that a Drunk man actually did that accidentally while messing around with the door (Except the HST they were on was going alot faster than 60mph)
You have no idea of the sheer joy I feel when one of your newly released videos pop up. And I am not even particularly interested in railway modelling either. I’ve just spent a lovely hour watching this, and am looking forward to whenever you release the next one. Great to see, and great to watch. Thanks for all your efforts, Richard, both with the layout and the videos. You should be very proud of what you achieve.
Neither was I I treated in model trains then I took the next step in buying a class 37 of eBay you know just to sit on my shelf next thing i know i have a small collection and growing fast now I have track too before I know it I be confident enough to start a haunting depot. Beats selling drugs and fighting saved my life this guy having seen a copper in months on the up no more prison love life now
its my 60th Birthday today, i have been collecting 00 gauge for 53 years,, i have seen hundreds of layouts and built at least 15, this is beyond doubt the best, most functional well designed and detailed layout i have ever seen it was a joy to watch and well done, i cannot fathom how much work already has gone into this work of art
Absolutely beautiful layout. You've got the track/scenery balance spot on, and the trains look like they're actually going somewhere rather than round and round.
Hi Richard, hope you are well. I lived in London and Swindon from 69 until 94 !. Swindon last 8yrs. As you know, Swindon was Brunell GWR prior. A sleepy town dominated by the railway works that went from 30k to 160k population in the 80s. Have stood on that station and had pricey coffee in the middle of Winter. What a desolate place. You can hear London and Sth. Wales at the same time ⌚!. Your layout is mega lovely jubilee with mates included. Your details of the arse end of places is incredible. [ Enjoy, no rush ?. ] should be on your layout posters. Thanks to you and your mates for this diamond. Dave
Richard, I'm always impressed by how you've not fallen into the trap of the "track has to be everywhere" style of model railways. By being smart and relinquishing and devoting an entire scenic side of the room for your fiddle yard as opposed to the necessary evil of helixes to access under layout storage, you've absolutely nailed it for me. Of course, there's nothing wrong with wanting to fill up every piece of usable space with track, but for me it's so much more realistic with the planning and restraint you've shown and now you have a layout that has the uncluttered look and feel of the real settings you're modelling while still keeping the enjoyment of watching trains run with minimal derailments and other sometimes unavoidable issues. Keep the great content coming mate! Dan.
Cheers Dan, track everywhere is an easy trap to fall into but I'm pleased with how it's turned out. Some wider baseboards would really help but I've only got so much space. Glad you enjoyed it.
Nothing but praise for your RUclips videos. A few years ago I gave in to model trains again: finally I have the space, time and a little more money to spend than when I was a teenager ;) And thanks to your beautiful videos and clear tutorials I have already learned a lot. Keep it up: I will continue to follow your achievements with great pleasure. Good luck and I wish you lots of fun, 😊greetings from the Netherlands
That was amazing! ❤❤❤❤❤ I grew up in an apartment overlooking an elevated subway line in New York City. I know how those flats and shops around the station must shake and rattle with every passing train. I can feel it in my bones! Two businesses that I never could understand being so close to the tracks were a barbershop and a dentist office. Thankfully, there wasn't a tattoo parlor.
just an idea for you on the unfinished highstreet infront of the station. possibly a car accident scene.. you could use busted up cars like in the scrapyard. recovery vehicles and maybe some emergency services with the classic blue flashing lights. just an idea. ive watched all your progress on this Richard and its one of the best layouts on youtube :)
I don’t like modelling, I don’t like model railways, I don’t even like trains in the slightest but I’ve been subbed to you for years and I’m completely addicted to EJ, never stop mate.
I used to drive epbs through the Atlantic lines, down to Stewarts lane and round and down into Victoria. I know those houses in Brixton, drove past them about a million times. Every single detail is absolutely stunning, there are several places where the cable troughing is in poorer states than those displaced covers. When i did my traction exam going down to Basingstoke, there was an occaision when due to squirrels damage the wooden troughing blew up and caught fire, (they had nested in and chewed through cables, set all on fire) we used to say that you knew you were getting closer to London as the grafitti got closer together. You are marvellous.🏆🏆🏆I willingly award you these championship cups.
This layout is nothing short of a masterpiece in my opinion, my compliments on this video however are for your commentary, which is concise, informative, and detailed. Damn good show.
Richard take a Bow, I’ve followed you for many years and I still get startled when your hand comes into shot shattering the illusion you’ve created. Thank you for making the “Tour” I appreciate the amount of your precious time you’ve devoted to our enjoyment.
Great layout. My brother in law and I took Croydon North Street layout to alot of exhibitions a few years back, Same era as your layout. Lots of NSE livery rolling stock. Just what I like to see.
Lovely video! Excellent to see this in overview. And definitely keep the building side open - it would be a joy to see an open sided building at the edge of the layout with a detailed interior. The shots from through the windows inside showing the moving cars are excellent.
I had to scrap my last layout in 1987 when I had to leave home. I’ve never stayed anywhere long enough to build another until now, albeit in Thailand! Every video a massive help in planning so along with all the other plaudits. Thank you again!
I love your videos you attain a level of detail that I can only aspire to I don't consider myself old at 60 but it makes me feel old when you say you don't remember places like Rumbelows and Radio Rentals, my first serious girlfriend worked for Radio Rentals and my wife and I bought a lot of the white goods for our first flat at Rumbelows and we also decorated our flat with goods from Texas Homecare.
^ This. Where is it going to be?? The pub is like the second or third thing that absolutely needs to be decided in layout planning. Right after stations and fiddle yards. 😉
When I was a teenager (I’m now 55) my favourite part of my layout was turning the layout lights on and the room lights off. I found it so exciting. I even put lights in the carriages but had to use batteries. I think what Richard’s layout does is bring excitement as to the possibilities of what is achievable. Until I saw your videos I had no idea how stunning modelling can be i.e. a work of art and a true representation of a period. Well done , so much appreciated
I remember the old layout and how sad many were when it was torn out. Watching videos, especially during Covid-19 time, was a great amount of entertainment. Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Thanks Richard, that was a lovely way to unwind after a long day! 😃 It is amazing to realise how much you have done, but even more amazing when I started to remember the old bits of the layout, such as the original alignment of the working road along the front of the station when there was no canal, the original scrapyard and canal along with that small building (can’t remember what that was now…was it a gents?) at the water’s edge, and of course the old aborted ideas for the branch line such as the lifted track into the double bridge and the aborted sidings (were they going to be carriage sidings or something? Again I can’t remember! 😀), and each time you have been unhappy you have dived in and redone what you are not happy with, which is brave! It’s not easy to just rip it up and start again, but you seem to even thrive on it at times! 🤣😂 Great stuff mate, I always love when I see you’ve posted a new video 😎👍🍻🍀
It's absolutely amazing as always, Richard. Be very proud of yourself. Great to see you on the TV last night 😊. It would be great to see a Scania/MCW Metropolitan bus somewhere on the layout, maybe in the scrap yard. A Reading example, maybe 🤔🤔.
That's rather unexpectedly quick after the last upload! Lovely, and exactly what we have been waiting for to finally experience the entirety of this new layout. And what a brilliant one it is! Thanks a bunch!
Great layout tour, loved every minute of it. As you say the hobby is all about enjoying what you're doing and doing it in your own good time. Thanks for a great insight into all your hard work Richard. Atb Graham 👍
Thank you for what you do for the hobby... I've commented previously but not that often as I should. Your layout and your techniques have taught me basically everything that I know that I've used in The hobby since I've been in it for two years now. You are patient, you are thorough, and you are extremely good at what you do. From everyone in the hobby, I just want to give you our deepest appreciation because as a result of your talents and your teaching you have made it possible for me to also have a layout of my own. Thank you ...and amazing work my friend
Absolutely spectacular Richard! I'm sat here enjoying this tour in the realisation that your loft is pretty much the same size as the room I'm sat in - which makes the size of your layout even bigger than I imagined! Your layout's evolution has been amazing and almost matching real-time changes in the real world as developers strive to constantly change our environments and familiar scenes. That is what makes your uploads very enjoyable and believable for the era you base this on.... It might be hard work for you building it, but rest assured it is amazingly relaxing for us, the viewer, to sit back and escape into your miniature world which seems almost devoid of the troubled world we actually live in :) Thank you for keeping going on this, and as always, I look forward to seeing the next progress upload :)
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it. While I try to make it as gritty and realistic as possible it's certainly a welcome escape from the world we live in. Building it is very relaxing too.
I would love to do a layout one day... As an artist and enthusiast I've always had the eye for details and the love of making, so all I need is money and space 😂 Keep up the good work, this layout is amazing!
Thank you Richard. It's nice to hear your thoughts behind what you've done, why you've done it that way etc. Thanks too for reminding us that it is a hobby, that we do it for enjoyment and for many of us, it is an escape from another life and not your total life. Thoroughly enjoy your videos, as and when they appear. Well done sir.
Hi Richard, thanks for this video. What an amazing layout, the level of detail is absolutely fantastic, the modeling is superior. Looking forward to the next updates! Regards, Paul
A really in depth tour around the layout Richard. Very enjoyable viewing. Have you already decided on the buildings that will go in the high street section against the scenic break? If not, perhaps the frontage of a 2 or 3 bay fire station in the middle of the row of buildings to break up a solid row of shops etc? I know there was a low relief cardboard kit available online of "Blackwall" fire station from the "London's Burning" tv series which could make the low relief stand out a bit more. Just an idea. 👍
NOT "hard to appreciate" the attention to detail and the intelligence of your design to maximize the space you are in. Heartily agree with @adelwulf8864 about your track/scenery balance - "spot on" indeed. Don't know if the sound of trains running is enhanced by a sound sytem, but especially in the opening sequence, sounds really realistic, including some "clickety clack". Look forward to every video, which are QUITE well done. (applause). Thank you again for sharing with us.
I love this layout not only the sheer scale of it, but early 1990 is when I got my first electric train set and lived in the southeast. You couldn't really all it a 'model railway', but being set in the modern day at the time, it had this sort of rolling stock. Never did get the NWSE stuff to replicate the real thing I travelled on though. I had HSTs and class 58 freight which we don't tend to get in my region.
Absolutely amazing and how far you have progressed. I remember you building the baseboards and the stands. You certainly have a good eye for detail. A great hobby to take your time at. Nice one Richard 😊😊😊
Brilliant update thanks Richard for your expert detailed information and excellent photography I look forwards to the next one as ever when you have had chilling time again cheers good inspiration for me to start a smaller layout now I have downsized and moved over nine months now and in planning stage 😀
Lovely walk through time and place. Thank you for sharing your passion and modelling skills. Your detailed commentary is really helpful too, reflecting on your thoughts and consideration for each element.
There would definitely be a Charcoal Grill burger/done kebab place in the parade of shops under the flats. Also have you considered railings for the end of the Bay platform? It'd definitely have some kind of hoarding there. Love the comparison shots. The early branch pictures look like something from 1985 compared to 1989/90
Fantastic job, Richard! Thanks for the updated tour. As a twenty something back in the eighties, your layout transports me back to that time. I remember buying my first Sony Walkman in Rumbelows in Friar Street in Reading, summer '84! Wonderfully observed detailing down to the appropriate graffiti, sodium glow street lighting and grime! Please go for the Texas DIY superstore - pure eighties nostalgia!
Thanks for showing us around your layout and explaining everything so succinctly. Your attention to detail, (especially with the era), is inspiring. The large stuff, like the shops etc, is perhaps more obvious than the background bits, like the collection of rusting rail - (Nowadays these have to be removed for safety, or else chained or otherwise bound together, so bits can't be moved onto the track). It all seems very accurate to the late 1980's. Great job well done
Amazing detail and great to have daily life away from the railway featured in your landscapes. Much more interesting and pleasing to the eye. Still one of my favourites and think it always will be. Great work as always Richard, hats off to you..👏🏻👏🏻..Chris
I’ve got no inclination whatsoever to build a model railway set for many reasons but nevertheless I thoroughly enjoy watching these videos and have watched them all,it’s model making on another level and I for one appreciate the work that has gone into it
A stunning accomplishment. Good to see the trains running at realistic speeds. So many excellent models seem to be spoilt by trains running unrealistically fast.
This is a great video showcasing so much skill. Watching it reminded me of all the videos you have posted showing all the various sections and now I can see how it all fits together. I agree with you about not feeling pressured to work on the layout. It can't be rushed. My layout is tiny but, none the less, it still needs to be worked on when possible. I like to think of it as waiting for 'The Muse' to visit me and give me inspiration and ideas. Adds to the enjoyment for sure. 😊
Hello Richard, thanks for posting such an interesting video of your layout. You should be extremely proud of what you have achieved. It is one of the best on RUclips. Regards Greg
This is absolutely fantastic. I have nothing but admiration for your layout. You may well beg to differ but I will say its perfect. The level of detail is exquisite. I have never seen a layout anything like that before. Sublime simply does not do it justice. Seeing a new video from you is eagerly awaited and enjoyed when they arrive. This really is a real railway in miniature. Superb.
Certainly a long way from perfect but there is certainly a lot of work there that i'm pleased with. Always room for improvement, that's one of my favourite parts of the hobby. Cheers
Never seen your work before, but I think this looks fantastic. Love the use of the station high-street and bridge to conceal the fiddlers yard rather than a tunnel. I grew up in Somerset, and lived in Swindon for several years, regularly travelling to London so recognise a lot of your design inspiration. Great to see you enjoying your hobby and thanks for sharing it with us.
The best model railway on tube, you are the primary source of inspiration for me getting into the hobby. Many thanks Richard, I really look forward to your next build, hope you are settling into your new house and job. All the best, Ross
This is the bench-mark all us modelers strive to attain, great stuff Richard as usual - I regularly go back to your various "how to" videos for inspiration. Chris
Really nice work all around. I bet it looks even better in person at night. I've always been into astronomy, so it occurred to me, if I had access to your attic, I would experiment with suspending high overhead a single, cold white LED to simulate moonlight. That way you won't get pitch dark areas on the layout. Also would maybe add some atmosphere if you could get the brightness just right. Just a thought. Thanks for taking the time to video all this. Cheers.
I cannot begin to tell you how much I have enjoyed watching this layout be built. Thank you for taking the time to show it to us. You should be very proud of what you have done so far, and I cannot wait to see what else you do to it.
Beautiful layout. My favorite spot is the canal/scrapyard. Will there be flashing lights in the rooms to simulate tvs in the future? Maybe you can build a little music studio or an aerobic studio in the new building.
Stop putting yourself down, what you have created is absolutely ruddy marvellous and typical of my train driving experiences for BR. F i could shrink myself down to scale, i would fit right in. I am retired now, but what you have made is fantastic.
Incredible work... I absolutely love the care and attention to detail... the scrapyard and canal look so realistic! 😃 Re Rumbelows... I remember them, in fact I remember my dad rented our telly from them back in the day!
Having thoroughly enjoyed so many of your videos ( I am late to the party and catching up) I just jumped forward too this one. Your layout is an absolute delight and your attention to detail is quite incredible. A favourite part of this video is the explanation of the heat insulation you did on the loft, especially not insulating the wall to next door because “budget was an issue”, then cut away to a fiddle yard with literally hundreds of pounds worth of rolling stock! I love it. Thank you for providing me and others with such joy and inspiration.
Beautiful, as always and very inspiring. I love your colour palate choice, it looks right to me. Here in Australia basically all British model railways use a super bright mid-dark green, having never been to the UK, it just looks fake.
Just planning to start building a model railway in N gauge myself. Your layout and work ethic is very inspirational and has my design mind overflowing with wonderful ideas. Thanks for you time and effort to make the video, keep up the great work.
Simply superb! I have not seen Everard Junction for many months and certainly appreciate the great efforts you have made. Over here across the pond my shelf layout will benefit from your instructions. Thanks so much for sharing!
I have been following you for quite a long time, and how your layout has evolved has been a pleasure to watch. The detail is amazing. Just when I think what else needs doing, you launch into a rebuild and make a great looking section into something amazing. Well done you. Thanks.
Hi Richard. you are to be congratulated on constructing this outstanding layout. Your attention to detail and the thought and research that you've obviously put into it is evident in the realism that the layout creates - first class. Thank you for the entertaining and instructive video. The addition of the people has brought the scenes to life.
Oh wow. I've been watching your videos for a while, so thanks you for the tour. It puts all the previous videos I have watched into perspective. Also, thanks for the tips and advice you provided as you took us around your truly magnificent creation. I echo every superlative written by my fellow commentators. It's epic!
I have watched this layout build over a long period of time and I am aways impressed my your attention to details and keeping every thing within the time frame that you are modeling. I find working on my layout more enjoyable when I have a train or 2 running on the first board. This also helped me with a radius problem i was having with a B12 loco slowing on the inner track curve at one end of the board. I had laid radius one curves without realizing it. I am using old steel track and nickel sliver track as i am very much on a budget. The raising costs of model railway prices is not helping a lot of people including me and how are the younger generations going to climb the first step into this hobby? Keep up all the good work. Martin. (Thailand)
I don't get time to spend long at the PC these days and have this evening sat down for one of the rare occasions I have a few hours spare. Its been a year or so since I have looked at your channel but my first thought tonight was 'Everard Junction, I wonder how he is getting on?' And lo and behold you have recently done this. What a lovely hour its been. So many things you mention bring many fond memories back and although we were not doing things as good as we should have been 30 years ago we have perhaps gone a little too far these days and its hard not to hanker after the days gone by especially after watching this. You have nailed the feel and look and im amazed at how big a layout you have created by your clever management of what is really a small space. I remember watching you make some of the areas and to find out you have completely redone some entirely is mind blowing. The re spacing of the tracks in itself is hard to comprehend let alone the effort involved in too many other areas to mention. I am going to have to look through the many videos that I have obviously missed in the last year or so. Simply lovely to watch. Thank you. Oh and I have also been in a Texas !
The attention to detail is just outstanding, so much interest to the eye and I remember many of the shops that don't exist any more, great tips for track laying, fantastic tour. 👍
This layout is a work of art. It is not how we wish the world to be, nor is it how we nostalgically remember the world to be, it is very much how the world actually was. This layout is the best in the country. More people need to realise this. This channel deserves 1 million subscribers!
Also Richard is the cleverest modeller out there!
Remember the slam door trains? They were still in service when I moved to London in 2004. You could jump out of the train when it was doing 60mph.
@JosephByrne My Grandad was a Guard on British Rail in the late 70s to the early 80s, he told me that a Drunk man actually did that accidentally while messing around with the door (Except the HST they were on was going alot faster than 60mph)

Easy to fall into the trap of too much track, I'm quite happy with the balance here. Cheers

Beautifully delivered comment.
Just Awesome. WOW .
Full watch .
Love this layout.
Mike Espo .
Fabulous attention to period detail - looks great !
Absolutely stunning track. I was 8 in 1989 and you have nailed the urban decay beautifully. And nice to see an Austin Maestro too!
Looking forward to adding some more Maestros and other proper 80s cars. Cheers
You have been doing an amazing job with this I wish I had the patience like you do.

Amazing layout, greatly presented! In my point of view, a State of the art class layout! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks very much for this very comprehensive tour. Any Everard Junction video is worth watching multiple times.
fantastic layout inspiring

Tremendous layout. Thanks for posting these updates.
Great layout. My brother in law and I took Croydon North Street layout to alot of exhibitions a few years back, Same era as your layout. Lots of NSE livery rolling stock. Just what I like to see.
Go to the area around Bethnal Green Station. The arches, the shops, retaining walls, street scenes are *exactly* like this. It's amazing!
#1 model train layout channel. Professional and beautiful layout. Such details. Amazing!
Lovely video! Excellent to see this in overview. And definitely keep the building side open - it would be a joy to see an open sided building at the edge of the layout with a detailed interior. The shots from through the windows inside showing the moving cars are excellent.
Amazing tour and great eye for detail. I really enjoy your updates and the narrative. 😊
Superb work Richard, no other words needed !!
what a beautiful layout..those trains just look so so adorable and sweet chugging round. mate your amazing..this has made me smile so much.
I had to scrap my last layout in 1987 when I had to leave home. I’ve never stayed anywhere long enough to build another until now, albeit in Thailand! Every video a massive help in planning so along with all the other plaudits. Thank you again!

This just amazing ,especially those night shots .Work of art and very authentic to the period .Town needs a sleazy pub though .

Fantastic video Richard your layout is amazing as always the work you put in is just wow, look forward to seeing the next video, 🎉
Thanks very much, I appreciate that. I make these videos to hopefully inspire more people into the hobby, glad you've enjoyed them. Cheers
It might be hard work for you building it, but rest assured it is amazingly relaxing for us, the viewer, to sit back and escape into your miniature world which seems almost devoid of the troubled world we actually live in :)
Thank you for keeping going on this, and as always, I look forward to seeing the next progress upload :)
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it. While I try to make it as gritty and realistic as possible it's certainly a welcome escape from the world we live in. Building it is very relaxing too.
Spot on mate. These videos could be used in some sort of therapy sessions. I disappear into an alternate reality while watching them. Just lovely
Absolutley superb layout tour, really nice to see the layout in its entirety , brilliant modelling
As an ex railway modeller I cannot tell you how much I enjoy your layout and the videos you make. Thank you.
That is a lovely layout. So much hard work been put into it and all that detail. I bet that gets away from the outside world
Absolutely amazing and how far you have progressed.
The early branch pictures look like something from 1985 compared to 1989/90
Magic! My better half looked across from the kitchen and thought it was a full size railway!
Awesome layout! You've done an incredible job and are an inspiration.
Amazing detail and great to have daily life away from the railway featured in your landscapes. Much more interesting and pleasing to the eye. Still one of my favourites and think it always will be. Great work as always Richard, hats off to you..👏🏻👏🏻..Chris
Thanks Chris, glad you enjoyed it. I've really enjoyed building the surrounding scenery. Easy to fall into the trap of putting track everywhere.
Damn impressive! You're skill and attention to detail really show in your efforts. I'm very much looking forward to your future videos. Well done lad!
I do love this layout. I’m enjoying watching your page even as a US modeler.
Awesome layout and thanks for the tour - something for me to aim at emulating in my own small way!
Regards
Steve
This is the bench-mark all us modelers strive to attain, great stuff Richard as usual - I regularly go back to your various "how to" videos for inspiration. Chris
Really nice work all around. I bet it looks even better in person at night. I've always been into astronomy, so it occurred to me,
if I had access to your attic, I would experiment with suspending high overhead a single, cold white LED to simulate moonlight. That way you won't get pitch dark areas on the layout.
Also would maybe add some atmosphere if you could get the brightness just right.
Just a thought. Thanks for taking the time to video all this. Cheers.
That's absolutely fantastic! So much work, and realistic too! You're one of the few model railway videos I've got time for! Wonderful! Well done!
Probably the first time I've watched an hour long RUclips video in full! Brilliant work!
Incredible work... I absolutely love the care and attention to detail... the scrapyard and canal look so realistic! 😃
Re Rumbelows...
Very enjoyable tour, taken at a pace for us mere mortals to admire your admirable modelling skills. Thank you Richard. Arthur
I have been following you for quite a long time, and how your layout has evolved has been a pleasure to watch. The detail is amazing. Just when I think what else needs doing, you launch into a rebuild and make a great looking section into something amazing. Well done you. Thanks.
You have a beautifully grim layout that wonderfully encapsulates the period. Thank you for sharing it.
Hi Richard. you are to be congratulated on constructing this outstanding layout. Your attention to detail and the thought and research that you've obviously put into it is evident in the realism that the layout creates - first class. Thank you for the entertaining and instructive video. The addition of the people has brought the scenes to life.
Absolutely love your layout, something I could only dream of. Keep up the good work.
Amazing layout definitely one of the best in the country love the late 70s and 80s my era living in South Wales.
Amazing, your attention to detail and craftsmanship is unrivaled. Thanks for the tour
Martin. (Thailand)
Cracking layout! Perfect late 80s details & ambience.
Stunning, magnificent attention to detail and “reality” with litter, cars, etc.
Nice change from the “perfection” that is very often modelled.
The attention to detail is just outstanding, so much interest to the eye and I remember many of the shops that don't exist any more, great tips for track laying, fantastic tour. 👍
