  • In the mid 80's BMW built the incredible E30 M3. But due to issues such as it being left-hand drive, and sanctions, the car was never brought to SA. So BMW SA decided to build their own version. I test drive them both

    Great vid. Bought back memories. My late brother had a 333i. Each 1 had a numbered plate. xxx of 200. In those days, manufacturers had produce 200 for sale, so it would qualify for racing, but they changed the rules, so it never raced. 3 series body, 733 motor & 535 gearbox. Another quirk was that the battery was in the boot. In it's day it was iconic.

    Nice vid, thank you.
    I recall the reason we did not get the E30 M3, it had nothing to do with sanctions.
    The M3 had a lot of changes to the body etc and BMW SA decided for the small local market it was not worth while for the retooling which would be a big investment.
    I prefer the 333i to the M3, it helps with the altitude, and it is distinctively South African.
    I strongly believe BMW SA made the right decision.
    If you wanted an M3, you could get one. Import duty was 125%, the duty was to protect local manufacturing.
    I would like to see a vid on the BMW SA version of the 745i !
    Thanks

      @@PerformanceWithPage Understood.
      What I wrote is what BMW SA stated at the time, I was disappointed at the time.
      Think of it, BMW SA would not have produced any cars in SA at the time if sanctions were that tight, no engines, no gear boxes or computers could come to South Africa.
      BMW AG, owned by BMW SA, gave them full support to develop these cars.

    My father had the 325IS, it wasn’t that great IMHO. I went on to own a Lexus IS 350, this was super special. Build quality exceptional and its 3.5 motor pumped out 233kw which is still by modern standards very high since it is NA.

      The fact that you're comparing a 2012 car (or newer if you have 3rd gen is350) to a car decades older nullified your statement... And while I agree the is350 is amazing (currently hunting a good 2md gen) the 2gr-fse is very good stock but due to the high compression and encrypted ecu it's not mod friendly so if you get bored with the stock power pretty much have to go IS-F or 335i

    Armed guards? is it so bad, meaning you cant enjoy your e30 peacefully.I own an e30 with m52 motor.It sounds bad ass, turns heads around when i rev it down the street, trying to do a complete makeover so its parked now,i am left with a few touches here and there and respraying.I think it would no longer be my daily drive since its becoming scarce and highly sought after now.Last year i could see quite a couple around being offered for sale ,but mid way through 2019 all those e30 have been bought and the parts are hot cake here in Ghana.The parts that sell most the under steer cover, the sun roof , doors , lights and fenders, lets say the body parts. and interior parts.I love this machine, its a car from God's well.

    • @nikobellic8284

      LOl you sound like a fool asking for documentation . Everyone knows this ! Also South Africa also made this First (e23) M7 , But the name was rejected and it was called the 745i it has the M5 straight 6 engine and other parts which is very expensive today .
      Also not many people knows that the 333i was so post to be Turbo charged . From the e23 7 series . It was canceled due to space in engine bay , But few 333i engines still have the Turbo sign on the inlet manifold

      Just to answer your question car manufacturers have manufacturing plants all around the world. To push out products 24/7 for sales. BMW South Africa has a one of these manufacturing plants and a motorsports devision which has been around for decades. The late Tony Viaana who was BMW's top driver in the 1980s and early 1990s raced these iconic cars on the track. I think its hard for you to believe South Africans can have the ability to innovate and build better cars than the Germans.

      The U.S E30 325is is not the same as the South African 325is. The South African one was specially built to be as close as possible in performance to the M3. It has a 2.7 litre engine, with lighter panels and upgraded suspension. It also had a different looking body. Only about 500 were made. Not taking anything away from your 325is bro, it is awesome and will only go up in value. Btw, I am South African and have two E30's.

    You needed security guards to drive around SA in a nice car. That’s pathetic. Fantastic video and great cars.Utter dump of a country.

    • @andrewb4470
      @andrewb4470 4 года назад +2

      The security guards were only needed as a precautionary measure because they drove through some 'poorer' areas in Johannesburg. You absolutely don't need guards to drive around South Africa in an expensive car. As in many countries, you wouldn't drive or park an expensive car in a high risk or slum area. Nobody has guards for their cars in S.A, not even if you drive a Lamborghini or Ferrari.

      @@Quattro_Joe You have just proved your stupidity and ignorance. I've visited South Africa a number of times, and it is definitely no 'dump'. There are plenty of upmarket areas and suburbs, and you see Porsches, Lambo's, Ferraris, etc driving around, with no guards. Cape Town is rated as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and it has world class facilities. I have lived in London and New York, btw. You are an ignorant fool.

    • @PerformanceWithPage
      @PerformanceWithPage  3 года назад +3

      Yea I know what you mean. I also heard later that another reason was the M3 was LHD only. But the fact that South Africans can engineer better cars than other countries in the 80's and 90's cos we HAD to is one silver lining in that terrible cloud.
