I remember Ray Clemence writing about this game in 'Shoot!' magazine when I was a kid - I think his article was titled, Ëcstasy, then Agony". It's taken me 38 years to actually watch the game to understand what he meant. Incredible!

I was at this match and also the replay just a few days later. West Ham could and should have won, but Liverpool’s ‘experience’ saw them through in the end, just as it did in Cardiff in 2006.

West Ham had a great team during this era and they deserved to get something out of this game.
The replay at Villa Park saw the emergence of a young Welsh lad named Ian Rush. And the rest is history.

I agree. West Ham were an excellent cup side around this time. The previous year they beat Arsenal in the FA Cup final. We were all expecting the first ever all Merseyside FA Cup final when the semi final draw paired Liverpool with Arsenal and Everton with West Ham. We both lost! The Hammers were rank outsiders out of the four sides, being in the second Division, but deservedly went on to win it. Respect.

Amusing that neither the officials nor the players nor the commentator seemed to understand the offside rule!

Paul yes he did handle it, there was no argument from the Pool players, and the linesman rightly flagged for offside, Lee was on the ground but the law back then was offside no matter what but the ref was a Pool fan
