US Navy *and* US Marine Corps *fighters*!! I flew C and D's for the Corps. Loved it. Legacy Hornet is a GREAT aircraft. We had the AN/APG-65 radar, a revision behind what is used on this lot 20 jet you are flying. I flew the "family" model longer than the C and loved having the WSO. We were *excellent* doing FASTFAC and CAS/SEAD work with the D. Put one of the Q squadron Prowlers with us, we were unstoppable. (I personally flew with VMAQ-2 a lot) good times...

Just saying as a former avionics technician who spent five years in a Canadian F-18 squadron... Always appreciate the F-18 matchups. Now, of course, the "C" models are single-seaters, totally fly-by-wire, so you really do need to protect your flight control computers. You know, no backup mechanical horizontal stabilators to help you out, lol. More seriously, F-18s are such great airplanes. Built tough, just look at the landing gear, efficient, multi-role. Built for maintenance with quick access panels and a modular approach. Very unique for the time. And they have like 30 different computers. All based on 1970s technology, lol. But still good and still extremely relevant. And most people probably don't appreciate how many computers are actually on an F-18? It's like two flight control computers, weapon system computers, an INS, an ADC, MSDRS, radar, IFF, radios, displays, strain gauges, RWR, HUD, you name it. Oh ya, forgot the datalinks, helmets, FLIR, lasers... What else? F-18s are such great airplanes.
Good kill for the Flanker-D. I think it's one of my favorite versions, possibly because it was the first Flanker simulated by Eagle Dynamics in the venerable "Su*27 Flanker" published by SSI.
its funny, i never played DCS but i watched so many GS videos that i thought - hrrrm, that was at least one evasive manuver short of shaking that missile before he was hit
Quick tip,, at 3:49 instead of moving the TDC over the target any radar contact with a + through it, just press the NSW Steering button to auto lock it..

I'm trying to get into dcs on the hornet and used your old tutorial to understand anything with regard to it's radar, but still seemed to struggle with it a lot. Would love a new one!

Could you do some videos where you show everything on a certain aircraft? What buttons do what, what the tones mean, what the aircraft is capable? If it's too many things, it could be a video series.
I'd like to see a video that does a deep dive on radar jamming and what the capabilities and shortcomings are. I've seen it mentioned a few times here but there hasn't been a real good look at it, as a strategy or something to be overcome. For instance, does jamming work against Fox 3's in a BVR fight, or is that even modeled in DCS?
Full Murder Hornet load out got murdered. Good fight, a smaller plane like the F-18C slinging a lot of missiles against a big missile slinging Flanker Variant.
Even though I saw the missile in the corner of my eye a second before impact. i still got nailed by jump scare. I even saw it coming when you were saying you need to regain control etc etc. Whenever you say it's going well. I'm like Jester with my hand itching on the ejection handle.
priceless, explained in detail how the AC has a 45° dead zone. the missile warning goes away in the steep bank, just comes back the moment he levels. And I think ... wait a minute, if that's beeping now the missile is still incoming hot - and at that range ... but by then it was visible in the window. ... is chaff any good against the m variant?
You’ve got the gouge on radar and missiles. An ounce of gouge is worth a pound of study. Old naval academy saying. Naval Aviator gouge: one peek is worth a thousand scans. When under the bag or wearing foggles.
So, we've learned notching works. I watched the f22 vs 2 31's just before this mission and those hypersonic missiles saw you and nearly hit you, in the Raptor. Yet here, hardly any evasive action. Understanding the differences wracks my brain. Radar appears to be a complicated science.
When will DCS have more WWII fighters? I would love to see a Dogfight over Darwin between Zeros and Spitfires (Vb or Vc, I cannot remember, but Zeros were A6M3 Type 22 ones I think).
Any reason you're using RWS mode vs TWS on the radar? I've been having good luck using TWS mode on for my AMRAAMs while using SA page to keep an eye on where the enemy aircraft are.

While the F-18 may be versatile, in terms of being an ACTUAL beginner, wouldn't something simpler, like the F-5E, be better suited for learning? My reasoning is that it's a smaller aircraft, far less complicated than an F-18, and It's based on the T-38, which we're STILL using as a trainer aircraft.

I have found that DCS is scary accurate. I would say 75-80% accurate. What about your experience?
