Listening to music on an old iPod feels amazing. What I love most about these is the fact that, unlike on streaming services, they can’t take the music away from you. It’s my little safe place, my world that I can step into using my headphones and the clickwheel. A place where I can sync music that isn’t even available on any streaming services. The feeling of carrying all your favorite albums that make up your personality and interests. They say ignorance is bliss, and so is listening of music without being interrupted by the constant fade-outs followed by messaging bleeps from that thousandth app that keeps reminding you. It really is a different experience. I prefer the Classic line because of their upgradability (you can actually replace the hard drive with SD cards using things like iFlash), but the nano series are cool in their own way. As a Linux user, it’s also worth noting that you don’t actually have to use iTunes to sync these (I’ve successfully been using Rhythmbox as an alternative instead). If iTunes ever stops working on Windows or macOS, there are most likely also alternatives available.
I love this video. I love when I run across people that feel the way that I do about music. I hate this streaming era. It’s cool to have so much music available with you at once but I’m not down with paying a monthly fee for it. I’ll gladly pay a one time fee for a physical album that I can keep for as long as I live and do as I please with it. I’m a big fan of the iPod also. I have an 160 GB iPod Classic that I got for Christmas in 2012. It’s still alive and kicking and works fine with no issues. I bought the latest iPod Touch last year because of the 256 gb option. The more storage, the better when you have a huge physical music collection. I can listen to my music without any distractions. I really like this because it allows me to listen to albums as a whole. Phones and streaming services have way too many distractions for my taste. I will consume music this way for as long as it’s possible.
@@richeyrich2203 You’re right! However, you can get rid of all the distractions and turn it into a music player alone. That’s what I did with mine. I just prefer to have a separate device for music and have built too big of a physical collection to let it go to waste and rely on streaming.
It makes me so happy that there are young people who still find old tech fascinating and worth investing in. Not so much the Ipod, but all the other gear you showed, like tape decks and vinyl record players. Very cool. : )
I think you would like to know that I think a lot of young adults, myself included, miss the tech of our childhood (late 90s to 2000s). So a lot of us collect and use tech from that era now! I myself use a digital camera from 2006 and a camcorder from 2007. They are legit better quality then my phone, and whenever I bring them to events everyone is willing to get in my footage and have fun! I feel like that is no longer the case with phones due to the toxicity of being posted without permission on social media and rampant cyber bullying... Sorry got off topic there omg but anyways! I also have a collection of vinyls, VHS, CDs, and I even burn CD mixtapes sometimes lol. Maybe I shouldn’t admit to that… But my point still stands I don’t think old tech will be isolate like big corporations want anytime soon lol. So I hope that makes you happy that love for old tech is very much still alive and well
The iPod will always have a special place in my heart. The 5th generation iPod was the first Apple product that my family ever bought. What makes that iPod even more special is that it still works. My dad still has it as a dedicated music player in his house. It’s amazing how the oldest Apple product that my family owns still works.
At some point my mom bought a 7th gen Nano that I recently found lying around. Either I or my brother must have gotten to it at some point cuz it was stuffed with meme music and stuff lol
I became an anxious adult, and for years Ive been wondering what was the cause of all of this. My mind was so accelerated and over the years I started to believe that this was the normal speed of anyone's mind. Just after I bought an ipod nano 3th gen, when I put my hands on my pocket to search something on google while I was having dinner, or check if I got new messages, or open a game that I was so tired of playing... only to notice that it wasn't my phone, it was actually my "new" ipod; I realized that we gotta do things one by one. Take your time, listen to your music while eating your dinner. You can do other stuff later. It is important to have different things in separate devices. You wouldn't do 5 things at the same time if you had to carry 5 devices, would you?
Got myself a Kenwood cassette deck and a couple of used tapes because of the cassette setup you had in a previous video. I have loved your videos ever since I discovered you. The writing, the music, the cinematography, the content, all amazing! Please don't stop being Canoopsy!
@@canoopsyFrom what I understand as of December 2022 apple itunes no longer allow you to download songs to your Ipod. I guess deeming ipods officially obsolete? Is there another way to download music to an ipod ? I own 2 ipod classics (5th or 6th gen I believe) and one of them I have to have repaired because of lock feature comes on .
@@BlackMusicGenreSo I ran into this problem myself. I ended up using iTunes on an old MacBook to solve the issue. however, you can use syncing in finder to put podcasts onto an iPod from current day macos, so maybe try syncing for music too. as simple drag and drop caused issues for me with digitally purchased music. (but not music I imported like Bandcamp albums or my CDs)
@@Eaton. I made a huge mistake by updating my iTunes in January of this year before I heard about the news of ITunes no longer supporting ipods of any kind.
@@BlackMusicGenrewhat do you mean? iTunes still works great and hasn’t lost any support for iPods. I still sync my iPod with my MacBook Pro 14 and it works fine
Thank you for this video. Has captured how I’ve felt recently with having unlimited access to music these days, which has shortened my attention span for a new song I like. With custom weekly playlists based on algorithms of your listening history, and new music weekly, with new playlists daily, I feel there’s more noise, and less music. I remember having a limited storage MP3 player, and would only put select songs on it, but then really draw out my appreciation for those songs vs looking for something new all the time. It’s not all bad, but definitely something I’ve noticed and am trying to be more deliberate in my listening.
Completely agree with what you said. I think the availability of so much content at our fingertips has made us appreciate and value it less. Even enjoy it less. And yes, the reduced attention span has really affected a majority of us!
this is what im really thinking, we were supposed to enjoy alots of music today because of easy access. but in reality, it only stresses out us. the minimalistic approach of mp3s are pure joy!
Last year I rehabbed an iPod Mini and I love it for all the reasons you list, but particularly for the peace from distractions. Still feels like a premium experience, even after all these years!
In simple words, this is a classic Quality Video You can notice minimalism, simple, nostalgic, motivation, creativeness and what not... Canoopsy you just nailed it!.
i still got my ipod photo .. i recently modded it to change hard drive to a flash drive and battery replacement and still work amazing .. love this device and still use it to this day
I did not know, why I cancelled my spotify, dusted out my mp3 player and started buying albums from bandcamp... I though it was just because I wanted my phone far, far away, but... With you pointing out that it is that tactile experience of music, it so resonated with me! Thank you for this video! 🙂
Well for someone who has a massive music collection, I Still use the 160gb ipod classic. Why, because i love the feeling of walking around with your entire music library like a deck of cards in your pocket. No apps, no surfing the internet. Just TONS of storage and solid battery life is all i need.
You bring back very fond memories of ALL my iPods. I bought every model that came out (and sold them to get the upgrades). I am happy to know there are people that still love this legacy device. There's something special about holding a device and actively clicking or scrolling to your song manually. So satisfying... I am glad to know you feel the same way. Great video.
This video inspired me to pull out my iPod classic. This week apple just officially died out the last iPods. It’s such a classic vintage thing that I will never get rid of mines. To be able to listen to music without interruptions is classic.
I have the feeling 2022 is going to be the year of physical media players come back into style - it’ll be slow but someone somewhere will start using iPods again and try to make it vintage trendy again - which I don’t mind. It’ll be cool to see
I’m 17 and I got my first phone in 2016 . Before that , I had an New iPad (3rd gen) + a MP3 . Come to think of it , I miss the old times using my MP3 , it was so convenient, as small as an USB . But now I have an iPhone 13 and AirPods Pro , plus Apple Music , so for me , its impossible to go back to using a MP3 , but I really had good memories using it .
@@npcimknot958 Lol that’s why I always download few songs on my phone . Money isn’t a big issue for me , I don’t mean I’m rich or something 😂 I just need a phone that is fast enough to do daily tasks . I don’t spend money often , so yeah iPhone 13 is still a good phone in 2023, the pros are too heavy and expensive for me
I still have my 5th generation iPod with the iHome dock after what 16 years??!! I love the fact that it has 1453 songs that I transferred to my iPhone 12. A modern day Walkman with more controls! ❤❤❤
I've been using iPods as well, and I love it. I blame Dank Pods for my iPod collection. I have a few more models I wanna get online and possibly even use. I've been growing my CD collection of my favorite albums as well as some good ones that I come across in a CD store. I've got quite the collection. I also have some vinyls that I need to get a player for at some point
I absolutely agree with this video, and is why I use an iPod Classic 4th gen, but I've realized why I still use Spotify (primarily when I'm driving). It's to discover new artists I've never heard before. I always love finding new artists to listen to and add to my playlists, but then again maybe I can do that at home then get them for my iPod and using it then. Idk, it's hard to avoid using a smart phone for entertainment on the go. It's sad, but I feel addicted. Maybe I need to take a break from my iPhone for a while, but I also need to take phone calls and don't have an alternative phone ugh, the world we live in
I started using a 2nd gen iPod shuffle with 1 (yes 1)GB of storage as a limitation, and as a mean to focus on my music instead of having literally millions of songs and dozens of playlists I made at my fingertips. And It feels real, nothing more nothing less.
What's also important is the songs that we listen to and cherish can and will disappear in a matter of seconds if all we do is stream from streaming services. Given the recent Spotify fiasco, what if the playlist I made has now songs missing because an artist decided to take their songs off of the platform because they do not agree with the content of some other creator.
I have a classic iPod which was a birthday present in 2003. The battery died a few years ago so I bought the iPod touch but it was never the same. Yes I still had the same music but there’s something special about that wheel to select music. I didn’t realise it was possible to change the battery. Luckily I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away even though it won’t charge. I’m now going to look for a new battery and see if I can bring it back to life. Thank you for your video.
You are right Issac. It's just like books nowadays where we can simply download epub books on our kindle or any ebook reader, but reading through an ebook reader just lost the great sensations while reading an actual book. I'm not audiophile too but I do enjoy playing music on vinyl and cd as it does provides that cozy feelings on my experience. It was a great time back then and I wish to maintain that now and forever. Great video as always Issac, where your videos bring us back to our joyeous memories.
Some of the artist mock-ups of a modern iPod look really cool. To be honest I went with the silver iPhone 13 Pro Max exactly because that color gives off massive iPod vibes with the white back.
Sat through the entire video knowing that I have the first generation iPod Nano somewhere in my room. What a rush it was to revisit it, albeit without listening to songs on it, yet. You've convinced me, I'm going to try this out over the course of next week. Great video, Isaac!
recently started using my old 2nd gen iPod touch to listen to music and one thing that blew me away was the immediate realization of how much better the songs quality appeared to be compared to listening on Spotify.
I picked up another 5th gen video iPod and replaced the broken headphone jack, battery and replaced the hard drive with an iFlash. I also use my 12" powerbook for ripping CD's and syncing the iPod lol. As fun as all that is, I honestly don't use it often. Same with my Sony discman and walkman. They serve more as decoration at this point.
I pulled out my old iPod nano a couple weeks ago and realized how much I missed JUST listening to music. Exactly what you said … there something just special about it. I went and picked up an old iPod classic for more storage. Loving every time I can remove myself from the phone and dedicate time to just enjoy music and nothing else.
I remember watching the iPod Classic at the mall when I was 12, dreaming about having one. Years later I bought and sold hundreds of them but still use a few for my personal use: a 3rd gen 40gb, two 5.5 gen 80gb, a 7th 160gb and an ipod shuffle 2gb. I'm emotionally attached to some of them but I completely agree with your video, the feeling of not being connected to the streaming music and actually disconnect with your own music it's something that only an mp3 player gives you. People still sees me as crazy by using an ipod in 2023, and I couldn't care less honestly.
I still use an old iPod to permanently hook up to my car stereo. It’s just more convenient having all my music already there and ready to go without having to worry about bad internet connection when I’m trying to stream music on my phone. I go on many road trips and I always go through dead spots.
To avoid shuffle an alternative method is to create an iTunes Smart Playlist. Use the "Limit to" setting and pick a size or a duration. Then tick the option to select by random. Then copy the items to a static playlist and do an iPod sync. This method seems to ensure a good amount of track selection randomness.
The 3rd Generation was my first iPod. I bought it new in 2003, and still own it. I used it for several years before I wound up getting an iPod Video (5th Generation). I really like it as well!
I still use my 120gb ipod classic, it's old, the paint is worn out, but there is something wonderful about its operating system, the click weel and above all the time you can spend curating your music and playlists, the space limitation is something that makes you appreciate every song you put on there. streaming is great but nothing like unplugging for a while just to appreciate the music.
This was interesting. If I can put my "millennial who acts like an 80 year old" hat on for a second: I grew up with cassettes, transitioned to CDs, a MiniDisc player, an iPod Video, and finally an iPhone. Through every step of that process, the endpoint would've completely blown my mind: I have a single device that's also a phone, a really good camera, out-performs a PS4 for gaming, has internet connectivity, and gives me access to basically every album ever for the price of less than one CD per month...!!! But, I kinda get it. For me, the iPod is firmly in nostalgia territory and doesn't really offer a functional difference to what I do today with my Apple Music library (I still obsessively curate my library, I still add content from Bandcamp here and there). I still throw on my headphones in bed and just listen to music for a while before going to sleep (apparently able to resist the infinite scroll feeds waiting for my attention also on the device). But, those cassette days were their own thing... Pre-Spotify/iTunes/Limewire/Kazaa/Napster, new music was a legitimately precious resource. Buying CDs was fun, but there was something super personal, deliberate, and indeed tactile about compiling a mix-tape of my favourite tracks, throwing it in my Walkman (or MiniDisc player later), and just listening to it obsessively. It all felt very special. On top of that, the mix tapes other people made for me are realistically some of the most meaningful, thoughtful things I own (and seriously need to search my parents' house for). My dad recorded me a mix tape from vinyl of all his favourite Beatles tracks. My friend in 6th grade made me mix tape full of the Offspring and Rob Zombie. And there were many more - in each case, they went through time of listening to every song in real time while recording it and put some thought into what they thought I'd like! If that's what the iPod is to you, have at it!
As a fellow millennial, it's not just nostalgia member berries to argue for the iPod. Phones have replaced iPods and they're far more capable... however... phones are so freakin' huge now!! My first iPod was a 2nd gen nano - it fit so well in that little pocked jeans have. Then the touch came out, and I could use iOS without having to fork out for an iPhone. My current iPod is a refurbished 80GB 6th gen classic - it's still only HALF the height of my phone! It's also lighter. I don't feel like it's pulling my pants down when I walk with it in my pocket. If anything, I'm nostalgic for when consumer electronics were striving to be small and lightweight. I never got into streaming and I've managed my iTunes library for almost 20 years - it's still the one and only thing keeping me tied to Apple in any way.
@@MattExzy I revived my old 30gb 5th gen iPod a few weeks ago. It's 16 years old and the original battery still lasts 4 hours... not bad! I also dug up my old MiniDisc player (failed lens assembly) and Walkman (had to order a new belt), but the iPod just sprung to life after I charged it. Yeah, you're not wrong. I never really noticed how phones gradually got bigger, but it's absolutely tiny compared to my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I don't seem to mind the girth of this phone at all, but that's likely in large part due to the sheer utility it offers. I've fully embraced streaming at this point, but I never gave up my original iTunes library, including ripped, downloaded, and purchased content like 20 years old at this point. It just sits alongside everything I've added from Apple Music, and I honestly just love that. I think I can see myself using the iPod here and there. But, lame as it sounds, I think the experience at this point is more about just living the iPod nostalgia for a little while than the music I'm listening to.
I had an iPod tough second gen (I think, it was curved, 3inch, no camera) and because of that I had a ton of mp3s to download onto my phone when I first got one. Didn’t have enough money for subscription services then, so that’s how I listened to music. To this day it still feels different when I go to my music player app instead of Spotify. There's limits to what I can play cuz I don't have all the music I’ve ever listened to at my disposal, and it really changes how I approach my listening time. It’s quite calming actually. Limits sometimes can feel freeing. I do love Spotify and all those magical services that gives us so much music, but I also don’t think I could ever give up having my own library. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for this video. I've got a few iPods, been using iTunes for 15 years, and I'm using a Classic 4th gen daily while at the gym or when I'm having my evening walk. I put a new battery in it, and swapped the old hard drive for a 128GB SD card. Works like a charm! The main appeal to me is the following: no one can call you and distract you while you're listening to music on an iPod. Each time one of my favorite artists release new songs, I'm buying them, transferring them on my iPod, and have a first listening session on it. Just to put all my attention towards the artist and its new material. I'm sad Apple discontinued the iPod Classics, but I understand why they did it. And it would make no sense to release a new model in 2022. It's such a niche market nowadays. By the way, where did you find your yellow Porta Pros? They look so sick! Best wishes and thanks for all the videos!
Great vid. I recently came across my old iPod in a drawer and out of curiosity charged it up. Still works fine. Sure, I wouldn't swap it for my iPhone but it's nice to have in the same way that I have a classic car. It's a different experience. In the same way, 12" vinyl is enjoying a comeback. It has much more of a sense of occasion. More special. You find yourself sitting down and listening rater than just have background music playing.
I have nearly every iPod version yet ive never spent any money in iTunes. I just copy the link of the youtube version and search up youtube to mp3 converter and then download an image of the album art. Saved like $300. iPods are great.
I had an iPod classic and recently found it at my parents house. What a trip down memory lane, mixes and songs I forgot I owned from limewire days (plus a few I paid for). I’ve been jamming out with my old wired beats solo, it’s a vibe.
I use my 1st gen nano for travel, the battery life is so good. Itunes still works on Pc's so the transferring process is really easy for people trying to buy refurbished ones now a days. Great video.
Still have my first ipod from when i was in High School. 2nd gen mini in blue. One day I'll grab another classic for the sake of having one (my last one died) . They're not really needed, but I'll always have a soft spot for these dedicated music players. I still have my old discman as well as Mini Disc player
@@canoopsy just made sense to do whilst i was changing in a new battery and the extra space from the m.2 drive gives me lots more choice. Still looks OG but the more modern inside are a great bonus
Honestly, collecting iPods especially nanos and shuffles is really not worth it. These iPods were not made to be worked on and eventually the batteries will swell and break the screen. Dankpods shows this and he is correct. Don't get me wrong, I love and miss the iPod era but the nanos are a nightmare to work on aside from the the first gen and 3rd gen. Both first gen and 3rd nano is the easiest because they open up just like the classics but the battery is still soldered to the board. I have a few but I would not work on them. The classics are def the iPods to mod. I have a 7th gen with 512gb in micro sds and a huge 3k mA battery which lasts me 1 month or so before charging and I use it everyday at school.
i used a 4th gen touch for years as my main mobile music player and also as an reader. it is now with a family member in a nursing home with a bunch of their music on it. i still have and use a nano 6th gen in a DAB radio dock in my bedroom. it's my "can't sleep and want tunes loud late at night device" some standard samsung wired ear buds and away i go.
I'd been watching DankPods' videos prior to watching this video so I was already pretty convinced I would get an iPod if I had the chance, but this video specifically was what pushed me to finally look for a used one up for sale. I'm so glad I got one, I feel so much more connected to my favorite music than how I did listening through RUclips Music and Spotify. My first ever gadget was actually an iPod touch 5th gen and I think I never really saw a classic model at all, so having a 5th gen classic now is both nostalgic but so new to me as well. The clickwheel is so amazing to me haha bonus points for how the replacement parts are easiest to find for this one, I hope to have it working for a really long time. Great video, thank you so much!
Hey I am rocking an iPod classic, 60 GB and I LOVE It. I agree with all your points. For me specifically though, it’s the being able to detach from my phone and just go for a walk with my music. And I love how durable the original OG iPods are!
3rd gen! My first iPod was the 10Gb 3rd gen iPod, and it was magical. I've made a lot of upgrades over the years, some were incremental that I regret wasting money on: 4G, "Photo"... if I'd been patient, I could have skipped straight to the 5G with video! Or waited even longer, for the touch! Though at that point, iPhone happened and killed iPod. So I guess I should have just kept rocking the 3rd generation - though upgraded capacity. I have a similar story, buying a used 3rd generation 40Gb iPod from somebody at a Starbucks (Craigslist ad) - I even brought a friend, for "security". I've replaced the battery on it, and modified the display/buttons to be green, like an old computer display. When I saw an opened but *unused* 40Gb iPod on eBay, I had to grab it. I thought $400 was a steal, considering they originally sold for $500, and this was mint in box on a 20-year old product! The back is SO shiny! That one's staying on my desk, and **never** leaving the house. Now, I'm considering doing more upgrades to my green iPod (Flash drive... maybe... I kind of like the hard drive aspect of it, even if it's more "fragile" and slower... Bluetooth? Wireless charging? If possible, those would be the ultimate upgrade!), while keeping the other one stock and mint. I've also always wanted a 1st and/or 2nd gen iPod, just purely for nostalgia. Great video! :)
Not to be harsh, but this dude is one of the biggest posers i’ve ever heard of. Always trying the hardest to look super cool and excentric. Cmon, everybody knows you don’t actually use that.
My opinion doesn't matter, u rule Mr.ratatatatata but......... Just bcuz none of the people in your lives or you don't use this doesn't mean he doesn't, I know people who don't even use phones and even the young generation of people in their teens who would much prefer a modern nokia rather than a proper I phone
Love my iPod video. btw you can get a lot of cds from a local library that can be ripped or even buy cds secondhand which is much cheaper than just buying the albums digital. cds can also rip to higher quality versions than iTunes provides.
I’ve had two iPods, 4th generation, classics and recently upgraded them with iFlash and larger batteries. This reactivated my 15 yr obsession, and I ended up adding another reconditioned 4th gen, two new (old stock) 4th gen Touch, and one new old stock 6th gen Touch iPods. Still loving them! ❤❤❤❤❤
I had one of the digital sony walkmans (NWE something) and that one had the best shuffle algorithm I have ever used. I never used the skip song after setting it to play on a specific set of songs and letting it go to shuffle thru the whole library. That was something amazing for us that have a wide range of music taste
Still use a iPod 5.5G Enhanced (2006). It's on it's 3rd battery and 2nd HDD. It does one thing: Play music, and honestly it does that job better than my iPhone SE 2nd gen. No e-mail alerts, no interruptions, just music. It plays for 10 hours per day at work in the background, and it never fails. It also has one hell of a DAC chip and it sounds great even today. Eventually it will get a new battery and a SDHC card conversion, but it's still my iPod.
Great video. I’ve got a iPod classic gen 7 160gb. loved it, filled it, dropped it, broke it, missed it 😢 saved for the flash mod and new battery now she’s 256 gb and the 3000 mah battery lasts for nearly a month wouldn’t be without it. Offline is the new luxury 👍
I have a 5.5 gen and a 7th gen. My 7th gen is my flagship so to speak. Upgraded battery and I'm upgrading it to 1TB when the parts arrive. It has all my music on it and I'm planning to add a lot of shows to it too. A disconnected device that can entertain me everywhere I go. I'm giving it a new front and back in gold and black respectively. Something Apple would never do, but that makes it even more fun! Not the prettiest though, but that doesn't matter to me. I use my 5th gen alot too though. That already has a storage upgrade to 512gb, but needs some maintenance. The battery is getting old, the hold switch is not working right and it's dinged and scratched to bits. But that actually helps with using the device, because you're not scared of damaging it whilst using. I just chuck it in my pocket and get on with my day.
I do have an iPod, but I have been reluctant to mod it to make it useful in modern times. However, I've been going the route of using older Android phones to as digital music/audio players. I have my entire library on a micro SD card, has a removable battery, headphone jack, and bluetooth. It took awhile for me to have a workflow to migrate my existing iTunes library to it, but it's been a wonderful experience.
I agree with everything!! I had about 3 classics post iPod era and I loved them, the audio fidelity the storage and the tactile feel.. at that time streaming services didn’t have 320kpbs streams so having that quality in my iPod was the best.. but sigh water damage killed my last one. And iTunes (now the music app) feels super janky whenever you try to move music from your hardrive library to your phone it’s just… straight metadata issues and no one seems to care to fix it so I surrendered sigh.
I still use my 5th generation 60GB iPod. I use it with headphones and a Bose iPod docking station. About three weeks ago I dropped it on a concrete floor and damaged the hard drive. 😢 I am waiting for my iFlash board to be delivered so I can repair and upgrade it. I like to use the iPod because over the last 30 years I have acquired a huge collection of albums (starting with vinyl then replacing them with CDs) that contain my favorite music. It’s really nice and convenient to have all that music contained in a device that I can hold in my hand and or plug into the docking station. Long live the iPod!
I love how you enjoy the iPod. I grew up with them from kid to adult. I have the iPod classic and iPod nano 6th gen but had to return it cause it didn’t work with my computer and iPod 7th generation that has an arm band that I use to run with!! I really hope to fix the batteries in them because I love them and miss the listening experience with the wire apple earphones and the block breaker game. I love this video.
The thing I enjoy most about iPods is the amount of customization that's available these days. Lots of new custom parts and mods allowed me to make a 512GB violet and black iPod classic 5th gen. That and never having interruptions are perhaps the best parts of iPods even today.
Interesting take for sure! I adore Apple Music, as the convenience of looking up a song or exploring new music on a whim is absolutely sweet. However, I find that iPods are great for my massive mp3 collection that I don’t want cluttering up my iPhone. Great video!
I understand what you mean. Instead of using a streaming service, I used to get the iTunes m4a files from a site, and transfer the music over to the iPhone’s music app. It was basically as if I purchased the music off of iTunes. Each album meant more because after transferring it over, I would focus more on that album. With it being more of an inconvenient process, the music means more. I now have Apple Music, but I’ll pick up an iPod and transfer over some favorites. Thanks for the reminder.
Me too buddy me too. For me its about the Wolfson AAC lossless audio, the ability to store upwards of 80GB sometimes more (an entire audiophile library) off network ideal for those of us who hike or do outdoors stuff. The special place it holds in my heart may be considered lo-fi tech to kids today but to me and folks like us it's still top of the line. Some of us love music to the extent we want it in our life every moment the ipod speaks to the heart of apple Corp. And by that I mean the force that turned it into the powerhouse it is today the iPod was a big part of that story it shouldn't have been discarded and it definitely shouldn't find itself entirely unsupported. If apple reaches a point they dont care about them they need to make it open source the ipod was a technological love letter that held a simple but very special place in many people's lives many of us had a massive CD collection and it allowed us to carry those and evolve. The IPOD in some ways contributed to the survival and widespread appeal of music that otherwise may have been lost or only found in someone's vinyl vault. To a music lover their ipod is a cherished item each library tells a story about the person who owned it. Today we have phones that seem to be stripping features and almost downgrading from a question that was answered over a decade ago a product that made it possible the kids who legit had a CD player that skipped every time the bus hit a bump, or an actual Walkman cassette tape with black sabbath on sides A/B who had to carry a handful of tapes or a case of CD's in their backpack to change songs and maintain know the value of the ipod classic it was a miracle to us actual 90s kids when retro wasn't just a fashion sentiment we were at the mercy of lo-fi tech as we were basically kids that were handed down late 8os stuff something as crude as a Sony brand anti skip disk player and some high quality headphones capable of bass output were life we lived in a world of scarfing AA batteries just to hear our songs or to play a simplistic game on a non backlit LCD. We are a group of people that learned to use DOS, then windows 90-8, then eventually the early forms of vista. Hand an IPOD classic to a young person today and they will very quickly realize how incredibly not lame they are.
Totally agree, for me it’s the size, my iPhone 12 max is huge in a pocket when mowing the lawn, Strimming weeds, ect ect where as my Apple iPod nano 16GB MP4 player Grey is so small and convenient, only thing it lacks is blue tooth.
BTW, you can restore the mirror like finish on the back with some aluminum polish and a dremel. And there is something to be said about owning the music on your device.
It took me 5 years to finally find a quality used 160GB iPod Classic 6th/7th generation. (It was from a local tech recycle store- see if your city has one.) it’s awesome I take it with me on every road trip and whenever I get in the car. I have the opposite problem: sometimes I can’t decide what to play so I don’t play anything at all, when I get tired of shuffle mode. Now I have several and couldn’t be happier. The only thing I would like to change is a way to interface with my car deck, so that I could see what’s playing on the car stereo on the dashboard, and could select and change the song on there, instead of on the iPod itself, which can be dangerous when driving. (Luckily, you can feel all the buttons without looking at them, but in terms of finding a new song I mean.)
Hi! Coming here to this vid with 2 years of delay lol. Anyway, it is so fascinating how old technology can bring you back to the good old days when everything felt more genuine. Recently I’ve been turning into digital minimalism to rescue my connection to everything and everybody that mean something important to me. I own a 7th gen 160gb IPod classic, and although I don’t believe for a sec it sounds better (cause everyone knows apple file compression via iTunes wouldn’t allow it) I still use it for the sense of having a dedicated music device. Just having piece of tech that won’t be throwing notifications to my face, one after another, continuously. A device without the superficiality of the social network apps constantly trying to steal my attention and my “Me time”. It is so important to use technologies to our best convenience and not allow to be used by them, and I think IPods are magical for this purpose.
Great video! This took me back and really made me want to find an OG video iPod. That was the first iPod I was able to get and I swear I used that thing more than any other device in my life. I would love to continue seeing more content like this in the future. The channel is definitely a vibe.
I have three ipods I use regularly in rotation. One for soundtracks, one for songs and bands, the last for ambience. I like having something that does one dedicated thing solidly and zero distractions. Also seventh gen nano plays videos.
Cannot believe I am just now seeing this. I love all my ipods and still use them in the car and in the gym. I never use my phone while working out to take away the distractions. I am surprised you did not pick up a 6 Pin Female to USB Male Adaptor. My next projects is to add bluetooth to one of my classic ipods and convert the drives now that I replaced the batteries. Thanks for bringing this "old school" tech back.
I still use iPods! Three, in fact. At home, I use an OG 1st generation iPod with its dinky 5GB drive. For everyday commutes and general listening at work, I use a modified 4th generation iPod that has 256GB flash storage, larger battery, and Taptic Engine. For long journeys, I use a modified 7th generation iPod with 256GB flash storage and a custom battery that can last over 100 hours without needing to be recharged, I've managed to take it on whole trips on a single charge. There's just something different about using a dedicated music device, one without any distractions from apps or needing a constant Internet connection and subscription for streaming. The iPod's interface is also perfect for its purpose, with intuitive controls and a wheel that can be scrolled infinitely through long playlists as opposed to linear trackpads on other devices.
I use my 160gb iPod classic when I go for a run. I still have some movies and tv shows on it that I can connect to a screen on the treadmill when I don’t feel like listening to music
Sometime around 2020, a certain dank RUclipsr got me into iPods again. It was thanks to him, I bought my first Classic, 4th gen, flash modded it, replaced it's bloated battery and bought the remote control accessory and loved it. Sometime in 2021, I got a 5th gen Classic, also modded it, replaced both front and back plates with transparent and iridescent plates, new battery too, 3000mah but really it's only 1950mah, also bought a remote control accessory, also by Apple but both remote control accessories were cheap on eBay, and it became my daily driver while my 4th gen was used at home with a stereo player which has a dock station for iPods. Sometime late that year I bought a Mini bundled with a 2nd gen Nano, both work, battery still great. I did flash mod the Mini which was super easy and that also became a daily driver, also used the remote control since both the 4th gen Classic and Mini had the same headphone component. I would switch between the 5th gen and Mini. I never owned a Classic, I've always wanted one but they were too expensive back then to which I just got a Nano. I still have my 1st and 5th gen Nanos. 2 shuffles (2nd and 4th gens). I did get an iTouch, a 2nd and 4th gen but because of that, I became less interested in getting a Classic and they were gifts. All of these iPods that I still own still work even till this day.
I have both 4th & 5th generations that I switch between, i think it’s that feeling that you own the music you listen to. As much as I have Spotify on my iPhone, it’s not the same feeling. What if Spotify or other streaming services disappeared tomorrow, I’d still have a large audio library to listen to. 👌🏽
Next video: daily driving a PSP 3000
Lmao
That’s me
I still do! 😂
Hello from 2024. Still using my iPod Classic, iPod Touch 1g an my PSP 😅
@@JoschaL same lmao, I fully restored my PSP and bring it around all the time
I love this video.
You should mod yr ipod to add flash storage. U can have more storage that way. Look up dankpods if you don't know him. He shows how to do it.
Paying for a physical or digital copy instead of streaming is two complete different things.
Lol the iPod touch has all the same distractions as a phone. Including calls and messages through imessage
@@richeyrich2203 You’re right! However, you can get rid of all the distractions and turn it into a music player alone. That’s what I did with mine. I just prefer to have a separate device for music and have built too big of a physical collection to let it go to waste and rely on streaming.
Don't say "consume music" FFS
Thank you so much!!
I still sync my iPod with my MacBook Pro 14 and it works fine
iPod forever
iPod forever cult!
ps: hypernova wallpapers are amazing
That transition starting at 0:50 was brilliant. Well done!
Last year I rehabbed an iPod Mini and I love it for all the reasons you list, but particularly for the peace from distractions. Still feels like a premium experience, even after all these years!
In simple words, this is a classic Quality Video
You can notice minimalism, simple, nostalgic, motivation, creativeness and what not...
Pirating:🗿🗿🗿🗿
There’s something about listening to music through an iPod that makes it sound so much better!
Great ! If a Device is fully functional then you can use them till they die. Its a perfect step to not produce e-waste.
exactly!!
Love to see the old PowerBook up and running, Also great.
It’ll be cool to see
Never
No.
I’m 17 and I got my first phone in 2016 .
Before that , I had an New iPad (3rd gen) + a MP3 .
Come to think of it , I miss the old times using my MP3 , it was so convenient, as small as an USB .
But now I have an iPhone 13 and AirPods Pro , plus Apple Music ,
so for me , its impossible to go back to using a MP3 , but I really had good memories using it .
If u lose wifi or don’t have money for those services u will love mp3s lol😂
@@npcimknot958
Lol that’s why I always download few songs on my phone .
Money isn’t a big issue for me , I don’t mean I’m rich or something 😂
I just need a phone that is fast enough to do daily tasks .
Maybe I need to take a break from my iPhone for a while, but I also need to take phone calls and don't have an alternative phone
ugh, the world we live in
I started using a 2nd gen iPod shuffle with 1 (yes 1)GB of storage as a limitation, and as a mean to focus on my music instead of having literally millions of songs and dozens of playlists I made at my fingertips.
Great video, Isaac!
i still rock the ipod touch 4
You’re so right. In this age of touch screens - the tactile nature of an iPod is much less alienating and more engaging. Great video.
recently started using my old 2nd gen iPod touch to listen to music and one thing that blew me away was the immediate realization of how much better the songs quality appeared to be compared to listening on Spotify.
This is why I bought a dedicated audiophile DAP. A high end one. I own a lot of FLAC. No phone no problems
I have the I pod classic 2005 model that I love so much
I remember watching the iPod Classic at the mall when I was 12, dreaming about having one.
You could’ve done a firewire 400 to 800 adaptor and if you do get it and firewire USB-C adaptor after that. Because I use a second GEN iPod as well
I still use an old iPod to permanently hook up to my car stereo.
I’ve been rocking the 3rd generation classic at the moment, such a cool design and the touch buttons that light up in orange are a real treat
Got one of those back when they came out. Totally insane how far we've come in such a short amount of time.
As a gen z er I just used cds until I was 12 had a real shitty mp3 player for 2 years then I got an iPod video of ebay
I love the Relationship you have with Music. It made me realize how much more Music actually is…
You can also use a converter. RUclips to MP3.

Gosh this made me so nostalgic 😢
I use my 1st gen nano for travel, the battery life is so good. Itunes still works on Pc's so the transferring process is really easy for people trying to buy refurbished ones now a days. Great video.
What I use an iphone for, music and podcast
Still have my first ipod from when i was in High School. 2nd gen mini in blue. One day I'll grab another classic for the sake of having one (my last one died) . They're not really needed, but I'll always have a soft spot for these dedicated music players. I still have my old discman as well as Mini Disc player
Use my iPod classic that I updated with a 500gb hard drive every day and would be lost without it, love listening to music on it
500GB??? that's incredible!
@@canoopsy just made sense to do whilst i was changing in a new battery and the extra space from the m.2 drive gives me lots more choice. Still looks OG but the more modern inside are a great bonus

Problem is that the lithium battery will swell eventually and those slick all metal mini iPods are unopenable without destroying them.
Dude. I'm impressed. You're a great designer. Your videos are gorgeous and actually a cut above in a lot of ways.
Best intro period. ⚡️
i used a 4th gen touch for years as my main mobile music player and also as an reader. it is now with a family member in a nursing home with a bunch of their music on it. i still have and use a nano 6th gen in a DAB radio dock in my bedroom. it's my "can't sleep and want tunes loud late at night device" some standard samsung wired ear buds and away i go.
Great video, thank you so much!
i buy an a ipod nano 7th for 10 dollars last days, love it!
An incredible love letter to the iPod, the perfect device for what it was meant to do.
Not to be harsh, but this dude is one of the biggest posers i’ve ever heard of.
Always trying the hardest to look super cool and excentric. Cmon, everybody knows you don’t actually use that.
this might be super over-complicated being the og, but i just got a 5th gen, put a 512gb micro sd and huge battery in it and i'm loving it
My opinion doesn't matter, u rule Mr.ratatatatata but.........
Man this brings back memories, the good old days.. 😌
This video is such a masterpiece. Thank you for your work !
Totally agree, for me it’s the size, my iPhone 12 max is huge in a pocket when mowing the lawn,
Strimming weeds, ect ect where as my Apple iPod nano 16GB MP4 player Grey is so small and convenient, only thing it lacks is blue tooth.
Some iPods have the option to play certain songs/playlists at certain times which I don’t think any streaming service offers
I use my 160gb iPod classic when I go for a run. I still have some movies and tv shows on it that I can connect to a screen on the treadmill when I don’t feel like listening to music
With the ipod I like to change the settings to pop rock or r and b plus it’s so nostalgic I love it
when the internet grid goes down, you will be glad to have an offline music with you, plus ipod is a tank.
