    I've learned that an adventurous life requires 2 things: being uncomfortable and going anyway. For us camping and hiking started in our backyard - literally. We bought a cheap Walmart tent big enough to sleep all 8 of us. And then we literally pitched the tent in our small suburban backyard. Eventually, we got brave enough to try a weekend in a local campground, and gradually went further from home. One of my 2023 goals is for us to tent camp in each New England state (our "backyard"). We don't have to live near epic National Parks to have epic adventures! ❤

    I love that you spoke about your many moments of thinking about not going with Ryan. Sometimes I feel that too when we are doing something. Listening to you talk about it made me see it from a more positive perspective. Ryan won’t remember any of those moments you thought about turning back. He will only remember that you did it! Thanks for that so much!

    I’m from Texas…let me start with that lol. We are a military family. We do what we can in each location & try to take advantage of what’s cheap, free, & close if we can. We have also done some really cool, once in a lifetime trips b/c of our location. We picnic, bring snacks, we do what we have to do SO we can do ALL the things. We are in JAPAN RIGHT NOW!

    Hi Christine, I have really enjoyed your RUclips channel. Learning a lot. First I'd like to say I am blind and I really love your energy and the way you describe things in your podcasts whether it's shopping, cooking or your budget breakdowns I'm able to follow along very well. Second I would love to say I am a camper grew up camping and have been going camping with my children They are all now 15 to 22. The time that we have been able to spend with our kids camping is priceless. We always do it as cheap as we can. We love to go hiking it's a unique and different experience for a blind person but I hold on to my husband and he guides me through it My kids have always worked together to take care of each other and any thing that comes up that we weren't planning on whether it's a car that breaks down or a rainstorm it's super amazing to me to see how resilient they are and able to problem solve and handle these situations and do it joyfully and be able to continue on our journey with our adventures and they love it so much I encourage anyone to give it a try if they're interested. I live in Utah so I have lots of places to get out and experience nature. And I definitely think it is a gradual thing when my kids were little camping was just sitting by the lake or a campfire. But as they grew we have added more activities and it's only been the last five or six years that we've really been able to call it an adventure definitely start where you're at and if you love it continue to grow and try new things. Thanks so much Love your inspiration.

    I watch another channel where 3 guys biked from the great lakes to the Florida coast, the one guy said that there is something special about suffering. When we are out of our comfort zone, out of our norm something cool happens. Memories are made! I want those memories for myself and my family. Thats where life is lived.

    Thank you both for taking the time to share! I really enjoyed this podcast because you speak truth. You give us glimpses into your lives but one has to know it took hard work, and focusing on your family to get where you are. You all inspire me along with my family to work on my health both physically and financially. My son and I have started to walk together and just get out and move. Financially I made a huge error many years ago in school debt, the amount wasn't necessary. Meaning I borrowed way more than I needed. I asked God to forgive me for not being a good steward of it. I got it right years ago and pay income driven payments. I work for a public service agency so I was able to pay and take responsibility and I just got word that I actually overpaid. I will be getting a refund and my school debt will be clear! I'm sorry for rambling, I just appreciate how you all give us teachable and take aways.

    I just LOVED this podcast topic!! It’s so true - you build up to this life! I’m a runner and have found that since I branched out to start running longer distances like half marathons and a full marathon, that there’s so much adventure just in running. I started watching your channel for the food and “mom” aspect, but then found myself so engaged in the other things you do that all of a sudden I wanted to start mountain biking too! 😂
    Another thing that I think you guys do, and that I’ve found myself, just being an early riser helps lead to that adventurous lifestyle. There’s something about getting up before the sun, and the whole day is in front of you, that makes you feel so much more alive and ready to go take these things on.
    Several years ago, I decided that “show up,” was going to be my “theme” of that year. And I feel like I’ve lived by that ever since. “Showing up” can be applied so many contexts, but for me, it’s made me push myself out of my comfort zone by telling myself I just need to show up and get myself to - insert activity. I only have to show up once if I hate it, but at least I’ve given it a shot. And 9 times out of 10 I show up again because I didn’t hate it (I was just apprehensive to try it).
    Keep up the great work, you two! You are so fun and inspiring to watch!

    I was very unhealthy & turned all that around & one of the great blessings is being able to physically enjoy adventures! Although I am 20 miles from a National Park, I prefer our state parks. Since I usually go alone, they offer many free or low cost activities so you can be with others. I have met the most wonderful people. I have gradually added gear & actually find sleeping in my SUV instead of a tent much better. Easy peasy setup/tear down! Love your podcasts!

    Agreed…I live coastal mid Atlantic and we always go hiking and to the beaches, basically free adventures. The local parks have many free programs that we used all the time. Plus we live where history took place. So bonus these places are mostly free also!! Adventures are what you make them! Enjoy those moments with your family!!

    I love your podcast! And I love hiking. I just got into it this past year and it definitely is the only time when I truly feel alive. I’m always saying that hiking is just walking! Hoping to get into it more and more - there’s little better than getting outside, moving your body and breaking up routine. You provide inspiration. Also a big yes to just getting out there and doing it in spite of doubts and obstacles. I’ve taken my 10 yr old daughter hiking and she always rises to the challenge and subsequently basks in the accomplishments. 💯

It wasn't man, they are rich! or anything like that. I live 2 minutes from a state park. You can ski, hike, bike, you name it for free. 500 acres of fun. Oh, and a lake. FREE Great podcast.

    I love skiing and I wish I lived locally and/or in a place where it's "cheap". I grew up near the Alps in Italy, but a skipass for the day is crazy expensive... We are now in England, and there are no mountains near us, so just traveling somewhere is not cheap... I'm sure it looks like we have an amazing adventurous life from the outside though, my husband is in the military and we've lived all over, from Texas to DC, from Germany to London, and we take advantage of what we can do in the areas we live

    I agree with location - I’m from Kansas and there isn’t much to do there. We loved our summers like crazy - visited friends who lived at apartment complexes with pools or went to the lake. We have lived in Florida for 6 years and there is so much to do and many of the events are free. When we didn’t have a lot of money, my husband and I visited/stayed with family members who lived in Colorado for hiking and skiing. Military members pay $125 for a lifetime pass for national parks.

    I'm so glad I tried this episode first! I love to hike!!!! My kids don't love it though😭 They go with me, but they don't have the love for it that I do. Maybe I push them too hard? What advice do you have to inspire my boys to love hiking (nature walks) more? (I'm mid-40s, with 13 and 9 year old sons - 2 boys. We aren't athletic, but hiking is the one athletic thing I love, but they don't so much.)
    Also, how did you decide to move to Idaho? We love the mountains, but have no family that live in any of those areas. Moving away from family with just me and my kids is scary, but I want to so badly. Have you done that in any of your moves? If so, how did you overcome the fear/uncertainty?
    I also love national parks, but I live FAR from them. In 2020, we adventured a LOT... we did a week in Colorado and a week in the Smoky Mountains, and then a road trip to Mt. Rushmore (4 days in a car with my Dad...THAT was an adventure 🤣). They loved each trip! We made a TON of memories! We haven't been able to travel like that since because of my new job. I think I've been overlooking the essence of adventure, that it's about trying something new, and you don't have to go far to do that. Thank you for the reminder!!!! 🥰

    I so wish to be more of an outdoorsy person, my son would greatly benefit from me being that since he could spend all day outside, but I can’t figure out how to overcome my anxiety and IBS to be that way. If I know there’s no bathroom around, I’ll have to go. Can’t even go into stores with no public bathrooms.

    • @stephaniegaddis1716
      @stephaniegaddis1716 Год назад

      I also have IBS (Crohn's). I understand the anxiety of "will I need a bathroom." My recommendation is that you start small and build up your confidence. Start with a walk around your neighborhood, maybe 10 minutes, and gradually increase how long and how far you go away from home. Then find a local park with a public bathroom and walk around the park and/or play with your son on the playground. Keep stretching your comfort zone. It is possible to NOT be held hostage by the bathroom!!

    • @bowlingmaniac1761
      @bowlingmaniac1761 Год назад +2

      @@stephaniegaddis1716 yea, I’ve struggled with the walk around my neighborhood too which sucks because we have 5 miles of walking trails. In the summer we have 2 pools that are open with bathrooms so I’ll have to just try and build up walking to the pool and back or something, knowing I could go there if I had to. I’m a little better with bike riding because I can pedal faster if I need to. Lol.

      It is difficult for us to do certain activities outdoors bc my younger daughter has Horner syndrome where she only sweats on one side of her body and she overheats very easily in the summer and it just not comfortable. So we stick with pools and the beach. She also has scoliosis so her core is not very strong. I feel like the marine slogan. Adapt and Overcome. We do the things that we can do safely and comfortably. I do feel sad for her that these options mountain type activities are not very conducive for her. I think the point of adventure. Is just leave the house and do something. Does not even have to be physical. It could be volunteering or playing a board game at a picnic table in the park.

    • @bowlingmaniac1761
      @bowlingmaniac1761 Год назад

      @@rebeccabaca559 that sounds like a sucky condition. We have a lot of lakes around here and a boat but it’s kinda the same issue of there’s no bathroom on the boat and the close lakes don’t have quick to access bathrooms (I was dealing with a lot of urgency issues over the summer). I’m hoping I can work towards overcoming these this summer, but we’ll see with a newborn. Lol.

      There’s always hope. First, you don’t have to be athletic to enjoy the outdoors. Second, beware of labels, they create self-limiting beliefs. Finally, be willing to be experiment with activities, outdoor spaces, and groups until you find something you do like.

      I used to be the same way. Like many other commenters have said, just slowly push your limits. Try different things until you find what you like, it doesn't have to look the same as someone else. Also, there are lots of things you can do to be more comfortable in the heat (like wearing loose clothes and putting a wet cloth on your neck).
