My mom was on clanazapam for 20+ years, different doctors and she didn’t know it ruins your liver! Didn’t read the papers that came with. hi tara!! as someone who was been on anti anxiety meds for half my life i would recommend not starting it unless you are your doctor are absolutely sure you need it. i've never experienced side effects nor do i know anyone that has BUT there was a period where i stopped taking them and it was HELL. just be aware that youre taking meds that change the chemical balances in your body/brain. they truly changed my life and i will always recommend the medication route if it is something you really feel would improve your life. i hope that doesnt come across as saying you dont "need" it, just that if you're still really unsure about it then i would say there is no rush! so many doctors are so quick to go the medication route when it truly isn't for everybody. meds affect everyone so differently and it truly is a trial and error with different brands and doses that takes months or sometimes even years to get right. i hope that makes sense :) and cant wait to see you start acomaf!

Hey Tara! There are many things you can do on a day to day to improve your anxiety! Don’t forget you just came off of a weekend where alcohol was involved. That causes a lot of anxiety afterwards. Just go back to cutting it out like you’ve been doing for the past few months. Also, try to switch to Matcha first thing in the morning so you don’t get the jittery, mind racing that coffee gives you. Yoga, walks, runs also help regulate the nervous system! You’ve got this, mind over matter!

Medication is such a personal choice! It personally changed my life - I take both anti-anxiety and ADHD meds, and I can say from first-hand experience that the side effects *do not last* and weren't as bad as the internet made them out to be! (Drowsiness, low appetite, headaches - all gone within the first couple of weeks for me) Of course, every medication is different, and everyone reacts to it differently, but take comfort in that your doctor only has your best interest in mind ☺

I have dealt with anxiety, stress, trauma, etc .. I started seeing a therapist and my therapist recommended I start breathwork, cold plunging and reiki .. since doing all that for about a year I have seen HUGE changes in my life. I was never someone who believed in these types of practices (I thought they were too witchy) but they have been life changing. I’d recommend trying those things before jumping into medication that will maybe cause you to have adverse reactions when you stop taking them. ❤️ ❤

Ah Tara! I completely relate as to feeling anxious when starting the anti-anxiety medications. I just started taking them about three months ago and something that my psychiatrist told me was, “you are going to be anxious about taking medications but that is because you are anxious.” And for some reason it clicked to me. Just have to remember as to why we seeked out help managing what goes on in our minds. I will say it has definitely helped. There will be side effects but they don’t last! Our bodies are just getting adjusted to is. Wishing you the best on this journey! I know it’s not an easy one ❤

I was on a similar journey recently with anxiety as well, and medication was too intense for me! Therapy once a month helps me, as well as remembering triggers: i.e. alcohol, coffee, not working out or drinking enough water, not sleeping enough. Think of your basic needs as a battery that you need to keep charged like your phone! If you're feeling anxious, it's a good chance that either your social, creative, or physical batteries could be low and need some charging. This always helps me remember to check in on myself everyday💖 hope it helps xoxo

My brother had the same conundrum with adhd meds and they made him so moody and unhappy and he constantly felt sluggish/had headaches. He found he did better after making some lifestyle changes after making a game plan with his counselor. Shockingly he thought the best factors were changing his diet (surprisingly, moving from vegan to whole foods with more meats) and also limiting his gaming/social media time and taking walks around other people at the park. Definitely would avoid if your doctor says you don't absolutely need them. But also you know you best, sometimes medications aren't always the answer! Hope you're having good day 💕

If I don’t take my medication I have regular panic attacks, insomnia, and social anxiety but I hate the feeling of having to be dependent on my medication so I wish it wasn’t necessary for my activities of daily living. So unless it’s causing you issues in your day to day life I would hold off until you feel like it is. But you know yourself best so follow your gut.

coffee and alcohol can increase feelings of anxiety, maybe try lowering the amount of those you consume too and see how that goes. in this vid you drank your coffee before breakfast which can lead to your stomach absorbing the caffeine much quicker which won’t help with that either! i know when i don’t have much food in my stomach before coffee i’ll get the jitters and then i’ll feel like i just need to pace around and i don’t even have anxiety!!😂

Hi Tara! I don’t usually comment, but I felt like I had to let you know my experience with ADHD and anxiety! I grew up with HORRIBLE anxiety, tried multiple medications, and nothing really helped. I’m the same age as you, and for the majority of my life I just dealt with it/managed it as best as I could without medication, but in the past few years it got absolutely unbearable and I was actually diagnosed with ADHD at 28. My doctor suggested ADHD medication, and I was scared because I didn’t want it to make my anxiety worse either, but it’s honestly helped SO much and completely changed my life! I learned that having ADHD can cause a lot of anxiety, so for all those years when I was trying different anxiety medications, I really just needed my ADHD to be managed! Obviously everyone is different, but I just wanted to throw my experience out there for you ☺️ I’m also someone that absolutely hates taking any medication, even Tylenol haha, so I understand that too!

Hi Tara! So regarding the meds I have a special needs child with both severe ADHD and anxiety. Having the right combo of meds is key and just be prepared that if you take ADHD med you may also need an anti anxiety med too because it does increase anxiety. There is also a 2 week adjustment window for any med so it’s normal to have slight side effects until your body adjusts. Anything major you need to stop immediately. You also may feel great for the 1st couple months then need an increase. That’s normal they will generally put you on a low does to start. And there are many different kinds of anxiety/adhd meds so if one doesn’t work you got options 😊

I’ve been taking ADHD medication since I was five years old, with breaks in between. One thing I have always struggled with as well, was extreme anxiety. It wasn’t until I worked as a nurse through Covid that I realized I needed my anxiety addressed. My doctor was surprised I went as long as I did without it, as ADHD meds CAN worsen coexisting anxiety. I was also very stressed (and frustrated with myself) about the idea of another medication. I’d like to give you my positive experience since starting it, and remind you that when you see negative stories, remember that all medications work on a person by person basis. It has helped, and I have flexibility of modifying the medication when my anxiety is worse or better. ❤

Tara, my husband takes “time released” ADHD medication. he’s been taking it for a few years now, and he says it works well for him. Talk to your doctor. Also, maybe have blood tests more often…sometimes, as women we need to tweak our vitamin intake, and also take them in groups as some cancel out others or have negative side effects when taken together. Either way, only you and your doctor can figure out what your body needs. Tip: we always write a note in point form to take in to our doctor appointments, as time is limited and notes can help.

as someone who is on anti anxiety meds i can understand your concerns! it can definitely be scary to start something that’s going to be altering your brain chemistry, but out of all the medications i’ve taken i have truly not gotten any side effects! apart from one med that made me super sleepy but that is something you most likely won’t be taking haha. Obviously trust your gut on whether you want to go ahead with the medication but i honestly think you should try it!! the side effects that they list are purely there as just a POSSIBILITY! from what i know, the side effects typically rarely ever actually effect people. and if you do actually get side effects, you just have to talk to your doctor! also if you haven’t already i highly recommend seeing a psychiatrist, they will be able to give you a much more in depth analysis of what’s going on with your brain as well as a possible medication that you could take to help things settle down, they also might not give you any meds!!

I have struggled with my anxiety and unfortunately trying meds made mine worse.I tried a few different kinds and all of them made me feel bad and left me with worse anxiety than when I started. I wish I knew alternative methods before trying meds but doctors are pretty quick to prescribe without discussions of anything else. I began working with a psychiatrist who saw I struggled with meds and was pretty scared of them. We decided to try methods like magnesium, working out, journaling, cold plunging and therapy and found this was the best thing that worked for me. My psychiatrist explained meds as the absolute last option if nothing else works. I definitely recommend going the natural route first and see if anything of those methods help. I saw a comment about alcohol use and anxiety and 100% my anxiety is worse after a night of drinking but it clears up after a few days.

Hi Tara! I am a long time follower and I am a clinical mental health counselor. So I have a lot of history working with anxiety and I deal with anxiety myself as well. So there are a lot of factors to consider with medication, and I would never try and diagnose or treat someone I’m not working with, but I definitely would want to know more before giving you any advice. First of all, what is the medication? Because there is a huge variety in meds and they do different things to target/treat anxiety but that will make a big difference in both how they work, and the possible side effects. There are TONS of pros and cons to taking medication for anxiety, plus there are lots of other options for managing your anxiety besides (or in addition to) taking medications. I’d love to hear more about your symptoms, and what med they are recommending, but without knowing any of that, I’ll just offer some super basic and general ideas. First of all, keep running/exercising, that is one of the best things you can do for anxiety! I’d also recommend yoga or meditation in your weekly routine as well. And caffeine can have a huge impact on your anxiety, so maybe consider looking at that as well. I’d also look into therapy, as it can really be helpful with managing symptoms and thoughts/feelings around anxiety. Other than that, I’d say just a couple super basic tips: if you do decide to take the medication make sure you take it as prescribed, and definitely do not stop taking it cold turkey, that can be dangerous. Also be careful and aware about your alcohol intake, both because it can interfere with how the meds work, it can increase side effects, and also alcohol (specifically alcohol withdrawal, so the days right after drinking) can drastically increase anxiety, so please just be aware of that too. Please feel free to reach out if I can answer any questions for you or help in any way, anxiety can be such a major struggle! But I’m happy to help you out with any information I can. Thank you for being you, you and your content have actually helped me a lot over the years. Sending love, Becky 💗

Hey Tara!! Not at all advice - just personal experience: but I was diagnosed at 18 with ADHD and was put on anxiety meds for the following 6 years - tried so many different kinds and nothing ever helped, only made it worse. Since then I got on aderall and it changed my life. My doctor (and personal research) said often people who actually have adhd have poor experiences with anxiety meds because it’s not the root cause - the feeling of anxiety is the symptom of the adhd, not the reverse. ANYWHOOOO - again, not advice - but I also know it can take a couple tries to find the right adhd meds to get it right :) sending love! Xo

As someone who’s had anxiety their entire life but hid it well from others, starting medication helped sooo much! I had avoided it for so long because of what other people thought of me (they didn’t think I was an anxious person cus I hid it well) and really wish I hadn’t and had just tried it for myself. You might not get the perfect match the first time but you won’t know if you don’t try. Also meds won’t fix everything. You’ll still have anxiety but they just make it easier to get out of those deep spirals. I’d also highly recommend starting therapy in conjunction with the meds to really learn different techniques that can help you cope with those emotions better.

I take Xanax for anti anxiety, but only as needed. I have panic attacks, or at least I used to. Now when I get that feeling-heart pounding, detached, can’t breath or maybe I’m breathing too fast, so I feel like I may pass out, I take one. And it’s wild because it acts so fast. I actually wonder if it really could’ve gotten into my bloodstream, or is it just because my body recognizes it as soon as it hits my stomach so I can feel all of those symptoms going away instead of continuing to escalate. My doctor told me she had one patient who didn’t even need to actually take the medication, just look at the bottle. Her anxiety would start to dissipate just knowing she COULD take the med if she had to. Thankfully I don’t get like that very often, but it sure does make life so much better and easier knowing I have a way out if necessary. I always carry a couple in my purse too, in a little pill compact in case my anxiety acts up when I’m meeting new people, or going to a new place, or trying some new skill. I really think it allows me to live more fully, because I’m not afraid of the panic attacks. Anymore. They are so scary to many that their world gets smaller and smaller. My first attack was on the freeway driving. Then I wanted to avoid driving on the freeway. That happens to a lot of people. First they avoid freeways, then the grocery store, then restaurants, then theatres. Every time they have those scary symptoms in a new place, it’s another place to avoid. Until some become house bound. You’ll have to gauge where you’re at with anxiety. But let me say this, when they do drug trials, they have to list everything every person in that study experienced while taking that med. Whether or not it was linked to that medication. Even if just one person reported it they have to list it as a POSSIBLE side effect. Which is good. We should know. But don’t let it stop you from trying it. It could really improve your life a lot. My medication has improved mine. And give it a month, if you experience any side effect at all, it’ll probably go away once your body adjusts to it. If you don’t feel better, if you do have side effects you can always stop and try a different medication. Of course it’s up to you what you take I just wanted to reassure you that a lot of us take meds without any side effects and feel better than we did. Take care!

I was prescribed anti anxiety meds once, I took one didn't like how it made me feel so I didn't take any more. I don't have adhd or add but the meds made me extremely anxious so they weren't for me. I was so happy when that one pill was out of my system and I stopped clenching my jaw. The only way to really know is to try.

Hi Tara, in regards to taking anti-anxiety meds, while I have not yet been diagnosed with ADHD (still a work in progres), I do however, have severe anxiety and OCD, personally the meds have saved my life, and made my conditions so much easier to navigate. But it has been a journey to get here, I'm on a relatively high dosis now and probably will be for the rest of my life, it took some time for my body and mind to adjust. Personally I would contemplate if you really need it, if your anxiety doesnt cripple you and prevents you for living your everyday life, then I wouldn't take it. If it does however, I would. For me, it was rough the first couple of weeks when I started taking my meds, not only physically but also mentally, it took some time for me to accept that I needed this to live. But I did not have any life due to my anxiety, most days I couldn't get out the door, and all I would do was sleep, because my conditions crippled me. Take your time to outweigh pros and cons, it is not necessarily an easy decision to make and do what you feel is right for you💕

hey girl!! i tried anti anxiety medication and it honestly made me so depressed and i gained so much weight. What i found worked best for me was completely eliminating coffee because of the highly acidic properties of it and i just have matcha in the morning now and sometimes black tea. I also take greens supplements which balance the PH in your stomach so it allows for better digestion, more energy, and no more of that pit of anxiety in your stomach

My husband took an anxiety med for a few months & it really changed his personality. It did help with his anxiety though, I think it was just making him numb in general, so the anxiety was better because he really had no emotions towards anything. It was very strange and when I discussed it with him he hadn’t even noticed this change. This may be rare though & it’s going to be different for everyone. There are anxiety meds that you just take as needed, not a consistent med that you’re taking every day….maybe try that route.

As the saying goes: The way out is Thru. Meds might not be Your answer, if the thought of taking them is worrying you that badly. If you've enough self awareness to know that you're having Anxiety and what causes it I'd say Do the Work and Deal with the Anxiety as it comes along. Eg. I have Dyspraxia. Revolving doors give me Anxity. When possible I take the "Accessible" doors usually on the other side? But if there is no accessible door I take a deep breath, clear my thoughts to better focus, enter the door sideways, put my shoulder to the glass, and exit sideways. I may look like an idiot, but I did what I had to to deal with my particular invisible disability and I came out all right at the end of the the incident. You know what works best you, meds that help others might not be what you specifically need. good luck sorting it out.

As someone that takes an antidepressant for anxiety (I don’t have adhd) I actually feel better than I thought. I thought my anxiety was just here and there, but once I started taking medication I realized just how much my anxiety affected me on a daily basis. But I started on Zoloft, and that fucked me up. I switched to Lexapro and I feel a lot better and more “normal”. But not everyone wants to take a medication for it, so it’s all up to your personal preference 🤷🏻‍♀️

As someone who has anxiety & ADHD (and also works in mental health) medication is SUCH a personal choice. It can be very scary. Your doctor was right that most ADHD meds can make your anxiety worse. I was on anti-anxiety meds for years in college and I had a lot of side effects like super low libido (I literally didn’t even want to hug my boyfriend or kiss him ever which came out of nowhere cause I’m a very physical touch person), my skin broke out a lot, etc. however.. this was JUST MY EXPERIENCE. Every person and every medication is different- it is very trial and error. You can always start at a low dose and work your way up which can be less scary than starting at a higher dose and then decreasing. The hard part of this is that no one can tell you how your body will react to meds, doctors can tell you the possible side effects but none of them are guaranteed. It also might just not work. However, the only person who knows how much your anxiety is effecting your life is you, so you have to make the decision and know that the effects of anti-anxiety meds aren’t permanent and you can stop taking them and after a few weeks/months you’ll be back to your baseline!!

I meant to comment this last week, but I've heard that if you put your espresso into the milk alone first (with your sweeteners too) and then add the ice it should taste better because the milk will cool down the espresso, and then the coffee won't be watered down as much by the melting ice, if at all. I hope this helps your iced coffee experience!

Hello! Just wanted to share my experience. I love my medication but only when I really need it. If I know I’ve got a move coming up or big project at work, I feel like the medication helps so much with just making all the noise a bit quieter and puts me back in control. It did take a few goes to figure out the right one for me but having that option for when I know things are getting too much for me is super helpful with me not losing control. Sometimes I try and talk myself through not being anxious but I get anxiety bad to the point my stomach starts having issues and I don’t realise how much my anxiety is impacting my overall health till I take the medication and feel it all go away. I would recommend it but also say that you are in control of it and maybe a low dose to have when you need could help.

    Hey Tara,
About the ADHD meds and anxiety, it depends, from what my psychiatrist has told me, the anxiety does get worse if it's not caused by ADHD-related symptoms (being unable to concentrate, having a short attention span, being easily distracted, etc). If our anxiety is caused by the stress that we get with the ADHD symptoms it will help a lot.
In my case, I have ADD and I have been taking Elvanse 30mg for the last 3 months and it helped me a lot! I can focus and be more logical, I feel that my brain has the energy for the things I need to do, so my anxiety has decreased a lot! And I feel no side effects atm.
Something that gave me some reassurance was having the anxiety meds to take in case it got worse with the ADHD meds.
    Hope this helps 😊

I've never been on anti-anxiety meds, but I know that they are definitely serious. What I did get prescribed back in 2009 was an immuno-suppressant for my auto-immune disease, and when I looked up the side effects, I was really concerned -- one side effect being non-Hodgkins lymphoma. But I know that side effects are quite rare and drug companies only list every possible thing that could happen to cover their own butts legally; most side effects that do happen are mild, and taper off after you've been on the drug for awhile. What made me say NO to the drug I was prescribed was that it was an immuno-suppressant which I didn't really understand in the doctor's office, but then I realized that I would have no immune system, (at the height of the H1N1 pandemic!), EVEN IF I ever stopped taking the drug! It meant I'd be barely able to travel or anything because I'd have to get constant blood tests to make sure I wasn't sick with ANYTHING (a cold could kill me!), and a very likely side effect was pancreatitis. In the end, I decided HELL NO, and I never took it. It just wasn't worth it to me, and I was not comfortable at all. Go with your gut... what does it tell you? If something feels off, wait and find out more information, see if there's an alternate drug... or even see if it's something you can discuss more with a therapist and maybe there's alternative treatments/ideas. You're in charge of your own health and your own body -- and your own intuition is the smartest person you will ever listen to! ♥

I went through phases with medication, having them work well for a bit and then not, before I settled on Wellbutrin. They've all made a huge difference in my life until they stopped working(minus Wellbutrin). The side effects can suck but they are temporary. Fatigue and loss of appetite were my big two. Of course, this would all be something to discuss with your doctor, but it has been wonderful for my anxiety and ptsd. It's a process, but a worthwhile one for me and tons of others people I know. Heck, my cat takes anxiety meds, too. It's a family event every morning over here.

Adhd medication absolutely changed the game for me and my anxiety/overthinking, and i haven't noticed much side effects wise. There are two families of adhd stimulant medications, so if you didn't enjoy the one you were on in the past, maybe try the opposite family!
