Strange Patching: QPAS Gong

  • This patch uses two low pass filters in parallel to simulate a long ringing bell or gong sound.
    Two VCOs are tuned to a perfect fourth apart, and then ring modded together. The result of this is patched one filter, while the unaltered output of one of the VCOs is patched to the other. They are then mixed together and gated using a percussive envelope with a long tail.
    Allen Strange wrote the book on modular synthesizers in the 1970s. Electronic Music: Systems, Techniques, and Controls. Unfortunately since the expanded 1982 edition, it has never been reprinted, and in today’s landscape where more people have access to modular synths than ever before, very few have access to the knowledge contained within. This video series will explore patches both basic and advanced from Strange’s text. Even the simplest patches here yield kernels of knowledge that can be expanded upon in infinite ways. I have been heavily influenced by Strange since long before I became a modular synth educator. Please share this knowledge far and wide.

    Walker you rock! I’m so glad you’re keeping Allen’s legacy alive while adding your own creative spirit to the mix. 🙇‍♂️

    I believe some of the best sound design demos about modulars has been made by you. Amazing!

    I have to admit that I had completely wrong associations with 'strange patching' as in making less obvious connections (like patching CV to the Morphagene's shift). Didn't realize there's actually a mr. Strange. The book 'Microsounds' was also an eye opener so maybe I can find this one too somewhere. It's probably going to be a real book with pages and stuff :). And again I did not expect a convincing gong coming from the DPO. Thanks for sharing this knowledge!

    That sounds amazing. And I do like a Burroughs quote in the mix!

    Once the sequence gets going, sounds a bit like the opening of Rubycon Part 1 by Tangerine Dream or even Kling Klang, an early long form by Kraftwerk (that they now deny ever existed--sad really).

    Super interested in the sort of howling coyote sounds that come in when the resonance is increased!

    wow amazing sound, you inspired me, i am trying to understand how to patch a Hang like sound. Maybe do you have any idea how to patch it so that it sounds like a Hang or a handpan? maybe add another one or more sine wave?

    any tips for tuning the VCOs of the DPO to different ratios without having frequency notation around the coarse tune knobs?

    • @MAKEN0ISEMUSIC
      @MAKEN0ISEMUSIC  5 лет назад

      I did it by ear. If it's easier to hear the interval at higher pitches, you could mult an offset to both VCOs' 1v/oct inputs, then remove it once you've tuned them. Or - you could use a 2-channel sequencer to sequence ratios... This patch in the book specifies a perfect fourth, but other ratios are sure to be interesting as well!! - W

    Brilliant sounds and patching. This needed a big reverb like there is no tomorrow, but anyway, brilliant sounds.

      mr. L yes, and the money goes to his family. If you google the book it should come up. I think it’s $40 maybe, it’s been a long time since I was there.
