Electronic Music by Allen Strange

  • What you don't know does not exist. Without the efforts of MakeNoise and Jason Nolan most of us would not be aware of Allan's book and I would not be able to hold it in my hands and film it. I had no idea Allen Strange used to work and perform with Don Buchla in the Electronic Weasel Ensemble, where Pat Strange played the violin. Instead of alien sounds, they made 'eastcoast' music. We may need stop thinking in synthesis coasts. The book is a bit academic by nature, simply because the modular could only be found at the manufacturers, the university and a privileged group of musicians. So it's a bit like going back to college, and it may not be an easy book for people like me - who never went to college in the first place. This book is a bit out of my league, but I'll definitely revisit it for a few episodes, maybe learn a few new things and share it. It's a goldmine of electronic music knowledge, but it's only valuable if it can be applied. The book makes frequent mentions of classic Buchla 200 series modules. Thanks to TipTop and Buchla, we can enjoy them as if they were made yesterday.

"[... almost] forgotten. Makenoise remembered. Mr. Nolan saved it."
Beautiful sentence, also accurate. I'm stealing it to use it in other contexts. Thank you! 🙂

That was great! I'm going to send the link to Pat Strange. I'm sure she'll love it.

I have the 1972 edition of the book. It was the text book for the class I took on electronic music in 1974. Never heard Allen's music before though, which I think is wonderful! Hopefully i can find some recordings.

    Yeah!!
I kind of 'distributed' this book up here in Norway. Took in 4 books, kept one and sold the other three (rather cheap) to other enthusiasts 🎶
Did my share to get this project realized😊
    So inspiring book!!

Thanks for this presentation. You remind me that I should take a closer look at this book. Bought the hard copy with the first kickstarter and just ordered a soft, workbook, copy that I can make notes in. And how about an honorary mention to Todd Barton's Strange/Easel patches walk-throughs which predate the Make Noise Strange presentations!?

Thanks man .. there's also a book called "Electronic Music Circuits" by Klein, that I've got laying around here .. sheew .. and it's 40 years old. It's pretty tough reading, for me .. but, the terms such as ring modulators, slew limiters, etc etc .. and then example schematics .. hmm, .. don't know if DYIers can still find these useful? .. but anyway, .. I should cruise through this more, for the basic concepts. And you're right .. when you experience firsthand operating gear, that uses these tools .. the terms then become a whole lot more interesting.

Really impressed by your production quality here, amazing and beautiful stuff! I’ve heard about the legendary book, but resisted buying it as I know it’s going to be too dry and academic for me unfortunately, but I’m excited to have you dig into it for us!

    • @kthumlert3574

its not that "academic" and is not dry, if you are interested in the nuances of principles, parameters, and techniques!

yeah i signed up to pay for the pdf. just got told that we all have to wait for the next kickstarter.....to buy the pdf. the explanation he gave was kind of weird. but yeah i cant wait to buy the pdf. lots to learn . love your videos

    • @symbiat0

Basically the Kickstarter ended several months ago but there were extras which he was selling off. Then he announced he was doing another batch later this year so that’s probably what you signed up for. I bought 3 different formats, because sometimes having printed paper in lay flat ring bound format is useful on your desk next to the hardware 🤔

@@symbiat0 a pdf though lol. i gotta wait for another kickstarter for a pdf. i just found it weird you cant buy a pdf like right now. i know about the whole kickstarter process for this one, i just thought and still think actually that you cant buy a pdf that, i will pay for then download is pretty hilarious.

@@leroy0053 I agree, it’s odd you can’t just get the PDF right now… I wonder if it’s got something to do with how the money is collected and distributed ? He had to get permission from Strange estate to make this edition and perhaps it needs to be settled ? 🤷🏻‍♂️
