This melody of that epic breakdown is actually a traditional Japanese folk song called Sakura Sakura. It’s a song literally every Japanese person would know. And they turned it metal. Hell yeah

    • @Jordan-Ramses
      @Jordan-Ramses 4 года назад +38

It works both ways. For Japanese people it's a familiar tune and for everybody else it's something new :) It's not only the breakdown it's the entire song.

When I first heard the 'Sakura Sakura' break down in this song I almost cried!! Before Babymetal, I knew very little Japanese Music, but I had heard 'Sakura Sakura' many times throughout my life for various reasons, so it hit me hard!

    • @TigStripe
      @TigStripe 4 года назад +2

Another use of the tune is the children's game, "Kagome Kagome." I'd have to compare lyrics to know if it was Sakura, Sakura or Kagome, Kagome, but I'd wager the style fits the second more.
In the game, one child is a demon that has to guess the person standing right behind them while the other kids chant the song and walk in a circle. If they guess right, that kid is the new Oni. The origins and lyrics of the game are widely debated, and have a similar kind of folklore to Ring Around the Rosey, ranging from the children's game to a pregnant woman getting pushed down stairs or a death row convict.

To quote the BABYMETAL members in the audio commentary they did for this song:
[MOA] SU-METAL will slash you. Really.
    [YUI] Yeah. [SU] (laughs).
    - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The 'Megitsune' music video and single came out on June 4th, 2013.
Su was 15, and Yui and Moa were 13, (about to turn 14).
Even at that young age, it was their second major label single.
It's their most performed song, and frequently tops fan polls as the favorite.
The performers pretending to play the traditional Japanese instruments in this video are dancers with the Movement Design group.
Chidori Yakumo is their director. She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown.
The girls said she was very kind. : )
Much of this video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo.

They don't do their own guttural sounds, it's a backing track, and more recently for the song Distortion, they got Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy for the album version. Great reaction to a great song - still one of my absolute favourites (and probably my top favourite most days). Kitsune is a fox, Megitsune means vixen or female fox. In Japanese mythology foxes are devious creatures that can take human form in order to deceive, but here they are singing about how women throughout history have had to hide their true feelings and to appear strong despite maybe crying inside, so they have put on their make up and a brave face - not to deceive but to please - so they are not kitsune, they are megitsune. It explains the masks and the end pose as well.

The audio the BBC did for the show recording was complete garbage...like wet, hot, dumpster fire garbage. It was a pop festival that invited a metal band.
They had multiple issues with the audio setup as well: They didn't mic up the second kick bass, and at least one of the girls' headset did work properly at one point. I caution watching anything from Glastonbury to anyone and everyone when it comes up.

    A fox
    I am a female fox
    Women are actresses
not to mention the melody is a metal version of Sakura, sakura basically the most quintessential Japanese song.
This song was released when Sumetal (the middle singer) was 12. It is a song about growing up into womanhood and what was going to be expected of her as a Japanese woman, which by in large still hold to the traditions of subservience to the husband. It's about how she felt that her life was going to be an act and not really genuine. We are not deceiving, we're doing our job.

Good stuff! You will constantly get comments that live BABYMETAL is best BABYMETAL. It's often true, because the studio effects are turned down and the guitars cranked up - makes it easier for metal folks to handle. There's also the crowd element. However, there are a few tracks where the studio version / MV is an essential first watch. 'Megitsune' benefits from the studio production, everything cranked up to 11 and the knife scene in the video. The other tracks where the official video should be done first are 'Doki Doki ☆ Morning' (first video, very young) and 'Iine!' (the transitions are more extreme). The opposite is true for 'BABYMETAL DEATH', where you really have to see the Legend 1997 live version.
If you want to see idols handling the harsh vocals, I'd point you towards PassCode's 'Taking you out' MV and if that's not hard enough for you try something from Broken By the Scream. There are plenty of Japanese bands doing interesting things with vocals. Try 'Vantias' by DIMLIM, or some DEVILOOF if you want to go extreme.

Thanks so much for breaking that down for us! This is why we love you guys. Sweet, so Death live and Doki Doki as well as Line MV....got it!
I've got those bands on our list. Shouldn't be long long before we react to them. 🤘❤ -Eric

@@dicodec Just for clarity, the full song title is 'BABYMETAL DEATH' - you need both words for the pun - and the specific live performance is from the Legend 1997 show. And although it's kinda fun when the mistake happens, I'll point out that it is 'iine' not 'line'. That's double ' i ' and you say it like 'ee-neh'. It's an expression of approval - you'll see thumbs-up gestures in the video. Hopefully that's not a spoiler.

You guys should look for Wagakki Band. Tengaku is a song I'd recommend.
They're a metal band but with traditional Japanese instruments too.
This song I've recommended even has a flute solo!

I don't know if it's true but apparently the "otome ga nametara Ikan zeyo" is a reference from a old Yakuza movie where the daughter of a triad chief says that.
You can heard it at the end of the trailer. The movie is called "onimasa"
Sorry if anyone already mentioned it.

Not sure if this was intentional for the music video, but I always imagine the playful bright color Su persona is singing the melody and black and white maiden Su persona is singing the lower harmony in the backtrack. (This also kinda shows the intention of the lyrics.)
Or, am I just looking in too deep and this is just a happy coincidence?

No, I think you're on to something there. It must have been Intentional for sure. Nice catch though I didnt even notice that
