The song presents a great message about female empowerment, with lyrics about how women are expected to always look happy on the outside even if they are hurting on the inside, but the girls aren’t having any of that. The melody that Su is singing to shortly after the breakdown is also a Japanese folk song called “Sakura”.
Also, the whole part when Su pulls the blade out of the bottom of the mic she says Otome wa name tara ikan zeyo which basically translates to “if you underestimate women it would be regrettable”

Eeeeeh.. not quite. Somewhat, but not quite.
It's more like "we lie (wear make-up and such) to keep the peace, but we're not actively trying to trick or deceive anyone (like a fox)"
or, shorter, "we're painting nicely, not maliciously"

Great reaction. I think you can see why 'Megitsune' regularly tops fan polls for their favourite BABYMETAL song even though it was one of their earliest. It is also the song they have played live more than any other and remains a feature on most of their live set lists.
Like Karate (which I don't think you have seen yet), 'Megitsune' reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen I think) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explain why all the fox masks) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) ... and they are strong.
The breakdown with the pig squeals uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). This is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo.
The 'Megitsune' music video and single came out on June 4th, 2013. Su was 15, and Yui and Moa were 13, (about to turn 14). Su will be 23 in December, Moa is 21.
The guys with the traditional instruments were dancers belonging to the group run by the lady who did the fan dance during the breakdown.

To quote the BABYMETAL members in the audio commentary they did for this song:
[MOA] SU-METAL will slash you. Really.
    [YUI] Yeah. [SU] (laughs).
The 'Megitsune' music video and single came out in June 2013.
Su was 15, and Yui and Moa were 13, (about to turn 14).
Even at that young age, it was their second major label single.
It's their most performed song, and frequently tops fan polls as the favorite.
The performers pretending to play the traditional Japanese instruments in this video are dancers with the Movement Design group.
Chidori Yakumo is their director. She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown.
Shamisen (three stringed traditional instruments) are usually played with a plectrum, sort of like an enormous pick.

Kobametal, the band's producer and long-time heavy metal enthusiast, started planning to launch an idol/heavy metal fusion group in 2009 after he was impressed by Suzuka Nakamoto's performance with her previous group, Karen Girl's.
Babymetal's first live appearance was on November 28, 2010, at Sakura Gakuin's first solo concert, Sakura Gakuin Festival 2010.
The band's first single, "Doki Doki Morning", originally appeared on Sakura Gakuin's debut album Sakura Gakuin 2010 Nendo: Message.
A music video for the song was uploaded to Toy's Factory channel on RUclips on 12 October 2011, and was released as a DVD single in late 2011, under the independent Toy's Factory sublabel Juonbu Records. The music video totaled over 1 million views by the end of 2012.

The stringed instrument is a Shamisen, traditionally a wooden box covered in cat hide, same idea as a banjo, and plucked with a plectrum calld a bachi. Not the sticks tthey use on drums, which are called taiko drums.
The pig squeel is not su, and the melody in that section is a traditional folk song that goes back centuries called Sakura Sakura, a much beloved song in Japan. I can only imagie that section is akin to Hendrix doing the Star Spangled Banner.
The girls were 12-14 here. Su is somewhere between 5'1" and 5'2" today - she really hasn't grown taller. Yui and Moa shot up, Moa is just over 5' today. They are rather dimunitive for all they are giants on the stage.

With Headbanger my favorite Studio MV.The girls have said the choreography was the most difficult for them. The "band" are dancers and not playing the instruments. You noticed the Mic/Knife Su pulled she had in her hand for the entire video, most miss it. She said "Maiden are not to be underestimated" that is a line from a Japanese crime movie and the Crime Lord's daughter says it.
The stringed instrument is a Shamisen, If you want to heard a Master play it, checkout the Wagakki Band "Homera Akatsuki". You will need to strap in, as it will blow you away!

It is also the first single released independently from the idol group Sakura Gakuin. the full music video, directed by Takuya Tada (多田卓也), uploaded to the official Babymetal channel on June 4, 2013. Unlike screams in traditional heavy metal, "Megitsune" is filled with festival chants by Yui Metal and Moa Metal like "wasshoi" and "sore sore", while Su Metal sings in the melodramatic style of enka.

The music video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo; it is now a popular spot for Babymetal fans from outside Japan to visit. The three members are shown dancing in Noh theater. In the last chorus,
The song contains lyrics such as "from the time of birth, women are actresses" which reflect on the song's theme of women remaining strong when living with their varied facial expressions. The song relates foxes, which disguises themselves for deception in Japanese mythology, to women, who disguise themselves with makeup. According to Su Metal. foxes are similar to women as they can keep their true feeling hidden, even through hard times, leaving a cool impression. The last chorus contains the phrase "underestimate [maidens] at your own peril" (なめたらいかんぜよ, nametara ikan ze yo, literally "if you underestimate, it would be regrettable"), which is also famously said by Masako Natsume's character in the 1982 yakuza film "Onimasa"; whether or not this was intentional has never been confirmed.

    Megitsune proper pronunciation:
MEH(メ)-GHEE(soft g, ギ)-TSU(ツ)-NEH (not ney, ネ= neh as in "never")
The traditional instruments are Shamisen (3 string banjo type instruments) and they use a very large pick that looks like a hair comb almost, and taiko drums that uses thick rounded ended drum sticks. The mime "band" is called the Hair band, and are just actor stand ins. The traditional song incorporated into this is called "Sakura sakura" (the breakdown part)
No, that was not Su doing the pig squeals lol! It's a backtrack. Video was released in June of 2013
Su was born December 1997, so that would make Su 15 years old and the other 2 girls born in June and July of 1999 were 13 about to turn 14.

Nice reaction again & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 I believe you have already had necessary information from many fans especially Grington300 300, Rick Wagner, tiaopiack, Ray Collins etc. They are reliable and I have learned a lot from them including my country's culture.
One thing I can add. The guys behind the girls, who did not actually play instruments here (possibly actors), are holding 3 shamisens, but the first sound you heard at 01:07 is from not shamisen but koto (琴), Japanes harp.
As grington300 300 explained below, Su-Metal pulled the short blade from her microphone and said "Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated". At their concert in any country, the majority of the crowd are men. Young, old, hairy, bald, skinny, fat, tattooed ... many such mannish guys shout with Su "Maidens shouldn't be underestimated!" in Japanese (especially in UK). After married lives start, those guys come to realize this statement is true. Ha ha ha ! So did I 😢

So, Japanese is easy to pronounce. A is always "ah", i is always "eee", u is always "ooh", e is always "eh" and o is "oh"
MEGITSUNE is "meh-geee-tsooh-neh". Translated it is a female fox, often seen as a trickster or deciever. " I am not a vixen, I am not a deceiver".

Megitsune is such a cool and unique song. It’s the song that defines BABYMETAL, in my opinion, no other band could do that. It features so many of their staple elements, both traditional and modern tunes and visuals, beautiful melodies and really heavy parts, an inspiring message, energetic and contagious dancing (with the choreography also integrating some very cool traditional Japanese moves), great vocals, adorable smiles... What other band could offer a package like that?
If this got you interested in the first phase of BABYMETAL, please check out their very first release „Doki Doki Morning“: ruclips.net/video/cirhQ8iLdbw/видео.html

Who says you can't have a dance beat and pig squeals in the same song? (edit) Haha, this song has both pig squeals and pig tails. That has to be a first.
When they recorded their first single 'Doki Doki Morning' Su was 12 while Yui and Moa were 11. They were less than 12 on average :) Nobody expected Babymetal to turn into what it did. That's the most ridiculous thing about the people who accuse Babymetal of being some cynical plot to exploit metal music. Nobody expected this to happen. Lets get rich by turning a more popular genre into a less popular genre. And with 12 year old girls. Genius!

I think you're very right to watch the music video first. However, live shows are what BABYMETAL is really about. Megitsune is a very exciting song to play live show, and I highly recommend seeing the live version as well. You can feel the power of these women and the power of the audience.

SUMETAL(vocal&dance) was born in 1997/12. YUIMETAL(scream&dance) was born in 1999/06. MOAMETAL was born in 1999/07. This music video was registered in 2013/06, so it is assumed that SU is 15 yrs old and YUI & MOA are 13 yrs old.
I hope you continue to enjoy your BABYMETAL.
    Put your Kitsune🦊 up!
    from Japan. (Translation by DeepL)
Megitsune is a song full of Japan. From here on down, if you're interested in Japan, take a look.
    Megitsune(女狐) is a female fox.
    me = 女 = female
    kitsune = 狐 = fox
There are many animals in Japan that are God's apostles. Foxes, Deer, Crows, Snakes... There is also a shrine dedicated to the fox god.

    photos.app.goo.gl/QzWdfkqbWp7kebVH7
When Japanese people hear the word "Megitsune", they do not think of the animal fox. In Japan, it has long been said that foxes transform into humans and trick people. Foxes are considered to be bewitching, mysterious and cunning creatures. "Megitune" contains this meaning.
The lyrics say "はじけてドロンして(hajikete doron shite)", They're singing about a fox transforming with a leaf on its head. If you can picture the ninja disappearing with the smoke, it's about the same.
"コンコン(kon kon) is the animal sound of the fox in Japan.
The first instrument used is the 三味線(shamisen). The shamisen is a stringed instrument shaped like a guitar. The shamisen is a representative musical instrument of Japan. Since the shamisen was born 500 years ago, it is a new instrument among Japanese musical instruments.
    The drums are "太鼓(taiko)". It's a 小太鼓(kodaiko)(=small drum) because it's small. Or, it's called a 鼓(tuzumi).
"それそれ(sore sore)" and "わっしょい(wasshoi)" are the shouts that are used when carrying a omikoshi(お神輿=portable shrine) during a japanese traditional festival. PAPAYA is also omatsuri(festive) metal, but so is this song.
The song used in the breakdown is "さくら さくら(Sakura Sakura)" and it's about 150 years old. sakura means cherry blossom.
    ruclips.net/video/7fahl47XcPA/видео.html
A woman wearing a kimono and a fox mask is dancing in a 日本舞踊(nihon buyou=Japanese traditional dance).
The dagger planted in the microphone is a 懐刀(futokoro katana) or 懐剣(kai ken), a sword that women used to insert into the 帯(obi) of a 着物(kimono). 帯(obi) is sash belt.
This music video was shot at this shrine.
    - 阿佐ヶ谷 神明宮 (Asagaya Shinmeiguu) - shinmeiguu.com/keidai/
能楽殿(Nougakuden) is is the place to dance 能(Noh). 能(noh) is the oldest theatrical art in Japan with its origin goes back to 14th century. Incidentally, the 3 princesses said it was hot as a sauna in this place when they shot Megitsune.

I don't know if between all the explanations anyone actually said that "Megitsune" means Vixen, female fox, as opposed to the other Japanese spirit, the Kitsune, which is the male fox. Both are tricksters and shapeshifters. So that's fun, cause they do have the fox god (which is Kitsune).

Told you this song would blow your mind lol :). Go back to Doki Doki Morning to see them even younger. Doki Doki Morning was their first single, way back in 2011. What I love about BabyMetal the most is they continue, song by song to push boundaries of what is "accepted" to be the norm for Metal music. They have rap, Bollywood, Power Ballads, Sea Shanty type, etc etc. When other bands say Why, BabyMetal say Why Not? Honestly, they never cease to amaze me, and virtually every song is different from every other song. The losses of Mikio and YuiMetal in 2018 was a huge loss to the band, which I still feel cannot and has not be filled.I also just want to mention the drummer Hideko Aoyama...the man isnt human, he is a machine. The double kick pedal work is out of this world...

So there are a few things that people haven't mentioned yet (but not many). First, you should also check out the live version of this. What is really fun about the MANY live performances of this song is that during the breakdown when Su is singing the low tone near the end, she is typically holding a fox mask in front of her (the vocals for that part are part of the backing track). As it finishes, Moa - who is on Su's left during performances of this - stands up and will do something to try and make Su crack up laughing. It's really funny to watch. She'll either try to mouth something funny, blow her a kiss, or something of the like. It is very fun and cute to see them having fun and joking around (although Moa does get on Su's nerves sometimes with her antics onstage).
Also, at the 5:21 point of the video you see Moa come at the camera and then disappear. It's because she tripped and fell during that shot. She was fine and made comments about it during the audio commentary for the video. Once it is seen, it can't be unseen, just like the stomp that D mentioned happened in the video.
