All these comments, the one thing I haven't seen is some one saying they've watched the movie.. And have come to appreciate all these rappers and how they write, not just there favorites.. Who's better than who is always trivial, it doesn't mean anything. My idea on posting this was to show appreciation for the art of writing, and how two of Hip Hops most revered rappers have similar styles of writing..
My good sir I appreciate this! The ones who really care about rap and listen to real rap know this, but most people are too ignorant to pay attention to the lyrics as heard in a song called syllables (supposedly by eminem, i'm a bit dubious on that one). I also thank your for referring the movie as I am trying to master the craft of rap.
Thanks for posting. Great doc. I think you get to see the emcees in a truer light as they were speaking to Ice instead of being interviewed by someone who has no understanding or real interest in hip hop. Fascinating stuff if you appreciate the art and craft of emceeing. I saw a screening in London and Ice-T was there doing a Q&A, great night. There's another hip hop doc called 'Freestyle' which they recently updated if you haven't already checked it out. Peace
Completely agree with you. Rakim seemed to be more mathematically orientated in relation to flow, while Eminem whole "sandwich" explanation sounded more appealing to word choice. Both have excellent flow and word choice.
+ZXQaos Excellent summary. It's fascinating to see that evolution of their method, Rakim was looking at like it was math, I love the fact that he says he sees a graph when he looks at the bar. That's gotta be an indication of genius, and the Em sees a puzzle and has a natural inclination to inside rhyme things. They are intentionally generating complexity for the challenge of it. That's true craftsmanship.
In just this clip, you can see why Rakim is the master. Just the way he thinks so much more clearly and technically about the craft, he has some truly higher-level cognition going on. Respect, lots of it. Rakim. The God.

***** No he doesn't. Topless is a Dr Dre song. You can find videos of Eminem rapping Dr Dre's lyrics for him so Dr Dre knows how to deliver the lyrics. Love that dude, grew up listening to him and Eric B. weave audible golden fleace, his early solo albums were the shit too.
For me the best are the ones that brought new shit to the table like Eminem's "white" flow which is fast as fuck and flawless. Rakim spitting those crazy intelectual rhymes. Pac and Snoop being the first swaggers, bling bling shit dog life. Dmx with the hardcore, 50 cent with the 20's gangsta shit. Nas with the poetry. Wu tang with the fusion rap. Every type of rap/hip hop has it s own best. There isnt one god of rap/hip hop. Those niggas are all gods.
Kevin Greene haha ha! Vice Versa! I'll check it out, any other specific examples, I haven't listened to a ton of his solo stuff but I love The New World Order album. Anyone who listens to him has to actually listen to music as I do, you should listen to the song I wrote on my channel, I still got a lot of work and I'm not crazy good but if you listen it has some good lines. Let me know how I could improve if you do listen. I don't post on every page for people to listen to it only if i come across someone who may be similar minded.
The topic vs the fact that you put 2pac's name in CAPS show what you're really trying to say. If you know alot about Pac you know Shock G... and if you watched enough Pac documentaries you'd know Shock G said that Biggie's flow was superior to Pac's... and also Biggie took the "King of NY" title with 1 album... Pac's peak influence was was around Me Against The World/All Eyez On Me... Not disregarding 2pac as great, but comparing the 2 and saying B.I.G. is overrated? ummm...
completely agree lol....what i dont get is...its not just mainstream that big ups big poppa...even real emcees rate him...it makes no sense...the n1gga said 'u look so good, i suk on ur daddys d1ck"......that bar alone, disqualifies you out the top 100
Em's trying to explain internal/external rhyming but doesn't know the proper terms for them. There is proper poetry terminology but most rappers/MCs don't know them. Em dropped out in 9th grade. It's funny to try to see them explain what they do whilst still uneducated on it. Definitely ironic.
Fuck that, Rakim was a scientist looking to fix his flux capacitor so he could get back to the future . Follow The Leader song was lyrically ahead of its time if you compare it to any record that dropped at that time.
i was a HUGE Eminem fan, but man, those fan-boys made me hate him. after i realized how shitty he is comparing him to Rakim, Biggie, Immortal Tech etc. i slowly became a hater.
iHate Eminem So, you're hating on Em because of the fans, and because some people are better than him? That's just plain stupid. Sure, I'd understand if you'd maybe stop listening to his music because you found other artists that in your opinion is better. But really, what gives you the right to hate on the man?
props on pointing this out man, this is the biggest thing i took from the doco. im no rakim or eminem but when i write a verse i do it the same way. gotta see that invisible graph and get freaky with it.
At what, rapping about rapping? Rakim can't write a concept song to save his life...every song is, "I'm nice and I'm nice and I'm nice, and I'm nicer than you and I'm nicer than you"...same flow on every track, humping the snare the same way every idiot on the radio does it. Monotone. Dude may have been influential at one time, but objectively, he's not remotely good compared to actual talents like Eminem.
TerrellOwens SpeedChannel Oh wow that comment is wrong on so many ways. What the hell has Eminem ever written other than a bunch of pop songs? Hi my name is hi my name is , slim shady. I'm slim shady yes slim shady all you slim shady's are just imitating. Yeal real complex. Rakim is your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. Changed the way rappers rap. Eminen raps the way he raps because of Rakim.
Henny Lopez Somebody has never listened to an Eminem album in his life. Rock Bottom, Brain Damage, If I Had, 97 Bonnie and Clyde, Kim, Criminal, Sing For the Moment, Stimulate, 8 Mile Road, Lose Yourself. Eminem has more concept songs than any other rapper, ever. Meanwhile, Rakim is rapping about rapping, and then rapping more about rapping, and then rapping more about how dope at rapping he is. Humping the snare. In a monotone. Eminem delivers his line as a voice actor keeping tempo, a la Jay-Z. His personality is present, he's not monotonously trying to ride what everyone else rides, landing every syllable in predictable places. Freak'n Ke$ha can do that. And Rakim didn't invent multis, they were around in other forms of music decades before he started doing them. Michael Jackson was using multis before Rakim was.
TerrellOwens SpeedChannel Stop smoking so much meth. The hell are you talking about. Clearly you have never heard Rakims music. In the Ghetto, Paid in Full, Know the ledge, Euphoria, Documentary of a Gangsta, Man Above, The Mystery (Who is God) ,Walk these streets, Holy are you, The 18th letter /the Book of Life. This movie/doc is TREMENDOUS! I highly encourage any hip hop fan to check it, the insight abs perspective it gives from the greats will deepen your appreciation for the art of rapping/wordsmithing/MC'ing.
Rakim is like Afred Hitchcock and Eminem is like Stephen King. They are both great writers. One is more a mystic metaphorically metaphysical writer and the other is a mystical raw story telling horror writer.
I almost got angry until I realize that your most likely young, but just type in Rakim in search youtube. You'll soon listen to one of the greatest EMcees to ever live.
"Eminem needs to stop ignoring the voice of his Grandparents, which speaks to his soul often", and he knows it. [besides that, the man is straight talent, all day and every day]. Hearken. {Proverbs 30:4}.
He laid some of the foundation for lyrical content, without rakim you wouldn't have nas, jay, eminem, andre 3k, etc. Rakim would be god in rap and your top 10 nas, pac etc would be kings.
Nas, in my opinion is the greatest at doing this (I know Rakim had a heavy influence on him). But his multi-syllable rhymes with his complex rhyme scheme and word placement is unmatched to me. Greatest to ever do it, but Ra is the originator.
Rakim is a fucking genius. Eminem IS nasty, no-one can take that away from him. But Rakim laid the intellectual framework for him, and to me, that make Rakim the smarter and more revolutionary one. Its like Newton, sure, he came up with theories of gravitation, that's admirable, but Euclid laid the laws before him seemingly from nothing.Rakim had no example from which to learn from and was a quantum leap in rhyming, whereas Eminem drew on what rakim laid and improve. Rakim is the greatest rapper ever and I'll always remember and respect him.
I saw this movie it's fantastic, I'm a writer and poet by nature I love the aspect of writing internal rhyme schemes. it fun I think the artists that can fit the most in a 16 bar verse are bone thugs and harmony twists and em

***** It's disgusting. Black Thought is the most underrated rapper ever. The. Most. Underrated. Ever.
***** the fact that u know who Wise is makes smile, sir! respect & love to u bruh! look up his album DJEZUZ DJONEZ! and his other ones too. peace
I don't post on every page for people to listen to it only if i come across someone who may be similar minded.
rakim must have been sweating his ass off wearing that down jacket indoors
i didnt understand shit what rakim said..
you're cool
***** you blind?
tom. lost he means the capital letter... because these grammar nazis point out anything they can lol
provideEVERYTHING how am i supposed to know that? All i saw was the only difference was the capital letter lol, i can only assume.
provideEVERYTHING Is it that time of month again?
I feel so sad and bad , that ppl don’t know bout this rakim the rapper we had.
Let's be honest biggie is over rated and top 3 rappers are eminem, nas, and PAC
Stfu asap furg
i agree
q-tip MVP
And all comes full circle with tbe massive props Rakim gives to Eminen, talent and creativity knows talent and creativity as soon as they see it
Em's trying to explain internal/external rhyming but doesn't know the proper terms for them. There is proper poetry terminology but most rappers/MCs don't know them. Em dropped out in 9th grade. It's funny to try to see them explain what they do whilst still uneducated on it. Definitely ironic.
Eminem always did good in English class even though he dropped out of school.
If you want to use the word "well". Then it would be "done well". "did good" is fine the way it was.
Ricearoni80
"Hugging" rhymes. It's like the rhymes are wrapped around each other. Example: orange, witch, bitch, door-hinge.
Fuck that, Rakim was a scientist looking to fix his flux capacitor so he could get back to the future . Follow The Leader song was lyrically ahead of its time if you compare it to any record that dropped at that time.
Rakim should have taught something about rhythm to eminem, eminem has no concept of rhythm
agree.
Listen to the Eminem show.
i was a HUGE Eminem fan, but man, those fan-boys made me hate him. after i realized how shitty he is comparing him to Rakim, Biggie, Immortal Tech etc. i slowly became a hater.
iHate Eminem So, you're hating on Em because of the fans, and because some people are better than him?
That's just plain stupid.
Sure, I'd understand if you'd maybe stop listening to his music because you found other artists that in your opinion is better. But really, what gives you the right to hate on the man?
yes, no. and you.
props on pointing this out man, this is the biggest thing i took from the doco. im no rakim or eminem but when i write a verse i do it the same way. gotta see that invisible graph and get freaky with it.
Rakim is way better than Eminem. Eminem isn't even good enough to carry Rakims pen and pad.
That whole album was a whole conscious album.
He is listed as a top ten most conscious rapper of all tume. He's a five percenter, those type of rappers only rap about consciousness. Hence the name Rakim Allah. Why do you think his name is the God MC?
"Eminem has more concept songs than any other rapper"
Lol stop lacing your weed. The fuck are you smoking. I understand you're a huge stan but be serious . 2Pac, Krs1, Nas, Talib Qweli, Immortal Technique, Chuck D. Ever heard of those rappers? Those are rappers you think of when you think substance. No one ever mentions Eminem when talking substance excepts stans like you who put him up in every single category . Lol damn I thought I heard it all from stans but this is a new one, lol the fuck.

Rakim's jacket is full of rhymes.
If Rakim had hydrogen in that jacket... He would be in space..
I like how Rakim talks. So badass like someone you dont want to mess with
This movie/doc is TREMENDOUS! I highly encourage any hip hop fan to check it, the insight abs perspective it gives from the greats will deepen your appreciation for the art of rapping/wordsmithing/MC'ing.
Eminem explained that beautifully
that shit look like its taking his whole body blood pressure.
Wow, listening to the 2 best wordsmiths of all time explaining how they do shit is crazy confusing but at the same time I bet it's simple
This is the raw art form of lyricism. Rakim his appraoch before he even writes is on another level.
First time I hear Rakim only talk, no rapping, he kinda sounds like Prodigy
Ice T was like... i need to step my game up lol....
I watched the documentary and i can tell you i loved it. Nice work and if it isnt for you, i would not see that documentary. Thank you and respect.
Everyone was rapping slow until rakim came around 86-87 with a new better flow then everyone switched to a faster flow
Em explaining that shit like the rain-man of rap... "I ain't got no legs!!!..."
"Even though you explained it,Nigga's can't do"...
LMFAO..real shit.
EM is the best lyricist ever. #RAPGOD
Bars over bars, Bars over everything.
"Eminem needs to stop ignoring the voice of his Grandparents, which
speaks to his soul often", and he knows it.
[besides that, the man is straight talent, all day and every day]. Hearken.
{Proverbs 30:4}.
Two absolute word smiths two geniuses!!!!!
Both these dons mastered the art of rhyme
That's peak creativity!
after recently learning the rap format i finally understood what eminem was talking about in this movie haha
Rakim is the greatest rapper ever and I'll always remember and respect him.
we should do this again with people like DOOM and Kendrick and Earl.
This is like listening to two mad scientists explaining how they each created a Frankenstein monster.
I saw this movie it's fantastic, I'm a writer and poet by nature I love the aspect of writing internal rhyme schemes. it fun I think the artists that can fit the most in a 16 bar verse are bone thugs and harmony twists and em
much love for bone thugs
Hae there, speaking about draws my intrest, could you help me out? What is that movie.
