Mr G, I am fortunate enough to live fairly close to that location, and it totally pops when the fog is in during the autumn. Fantastic overview of the place, and I love the low wall shot at the north end. Keep them coming, they are always interesting.

Brilliant that Gary! Not a massive woodland shooter but would defo like to visit that location! To all those thinking of becoming a member all I would say is throw that money down, absolutely invaluable tuition at an amazing price. Critique is brutal, honest but aimed to make you improve! I've learned so much from membership and love the comps, best money I've spent on improving my photography without doubt. 👍🏻

Trees are always my favourite subject - The Lime tree avenue at Clumber Park, The Wellingtonias in Wellington or the entrance to Plas Newydd on the Menai Straits - who can resist a photo? Is this THE BEST Woodland in England, guess Padley Gorge and Wistman's Wood reign for me.

  • @randymelton6096

As always sir a wonderful video and fabulous images. I suppose showing images of places such as this is a double edged sword. Wonderful that the rest of us get to see places we've never been but terrible in the fact that not long after a "new" place is shown it becomes overdone to death. I see this so often with other professional photographers I follow. They show their best shots from a place they just came back from and within a year or two the place has been over shot and you see images of it everywhere. I suppose our challenge as professional photographers is to try and find a better composition of the over done places and shoot it in a way that hasn't been done yet. I admire your work very much and try as best I can to do what you do. Sometimes with pretty good success, other times not so much. Unfortunately I don't have the grand places you visit in my backyard like you do so I have to make the best of where I go. One last parting comment, I must say I was shocked to see you shooting with a Nikon Z8 rather than the Canon you usually shoot with. :)

hi Gary you said its not good practice for the viewer to end up in the centre well I think it can and does work creating a sense of stillness and calm, I'm not a fan of obvious leading lines creating movement as once you eye has made this move what then, whereby placing together a solid simple overall composition has much more longevity

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  11 месяцев назад

It’s definitely not good practice, but that doesn’t mean placing the subject in centre won’t work all the time. Plus, if it works for you then that’s fine 👍👍

Only a few local photographers and dog walkers knew about it but now it's been so overshot with photographers coming from all over the UK. If you can forget the colours of Autumn hype (given it's now gone) it's a pint pot piece of woodland where you can concentrate on the structures of the landscape especially imo in B&W. When you get there it's an intimate landscape but very much worth a visit and one to put in the book if passing through the area in good light.

  • @Ruscombephotos

A line of beech trees is a b eautiful thing for sure, which is one of the reasons why the Dark Hedges in County Antrim, Northern Ireland has become such an iconic location, with its avenue of beech trees on both sides.
Beech trees do retain a lot of their leaves for a large part of winter in marcescence, American beeches more so than European. They look great in snow with the orange/amber hues.
I can’t believe the landowner has put that ugly barbed wire fence on top of the dry stone wall. There were a couple of photographs where it wasn’t there. Maybe there were some gaps on the wall, or perhaps you cloned them out. For me, they spoiled the images they were in.
There was an early photograph in the video, where there was one beech branch much lower than the others, about a third of the frame in, that was a bit of a barrier to my eye travelling through the rest of the photograph.
The colour pallet was wonderful, with the green moss contrasted against the orange/rusty leaves.
Some of the dog images (the very first) and the dog and hooman friend looking at each other were wonderful.
There were a few frames where you also showed the almost zigzag edge of the leaves on the path I really liked too.
I’m glad you made some photographs looking the other way with the beech trees and wall on the right. I think they worked the best.
Take what I say with a pinch of salt. I’m not a professional and it’s all subjective.
    All the best!

It’s a shame the landowner felt the need to put up a barbed wire fence to keep people out and stop them climbing the wall….😢

Ok, great, thanks...Gary Gough, Paul Cooper and Patrick Stebbings, all know where this location is, yet none choose to share...seemingly, a privy place... Just saying.
Nice photographs and I particularly liked the dog portraits.

I've not been to this location, but believe it is called Darwin Forest, which is just north of Matlock, Derbyshire.

@@johnmillar24121973 Thanks for the reply John, much appreciated. Actually, I don't live too far away from Matlock (a Nottingham lad), so I will check it out/do a little research, with a view to possibly visit and photograph at some point in the future...Cheers mate.
