  • In this video, we'll be reviewing the 1979-1983 Man Articulated buses. Of course, they were under three different years the 7000's series was 1979's the 7100's were 1983's and the 7300's were 1982's built and operated by Seattle Metro until 2001. This review took a lot of this to build since I had to look up all accurate information regarding these buses. These guys were ultimately Replaced by 6400's and or Nabi Articulated buses that CTA purchased in the Summer of 2002 but didn't hit the streets until 2003 out of 103rd Garage initially.

Man, these buses were a staple in the late 90s on routes like 6 Jeffrey Express, 14 South Lake Shore Dr Express, 146 Marine/Michigan Express, 147 Outer Drive Express, and 156 LaSalle. Shame that the Blizzard of 99 forced these buses to run like hell until they were forced to be retired for the 7300 series.

I’ve ridden a few on 6 before ‘04 It’s a shame they didn’t stay longer but some of them were well over the retirement age.

Both the 42-foot and 96-foot Americana's were my favorite buses to ride as a kid in the late 80s/early 90s--that is until the AC equipped Flxibles came into service! The last time I rode on an original 1983 96-foot Americana bus was #7167 in 2003--the very last one on the streets of Chicago at that time 🥲

    Great video!
These Mann artics remind me of the Orion III Ikarus articulated buses that Toronto’s TTC and Ottawa’s OC Transpo used here in Canada between 1985 and 2003.
A similar design of that articulated bus was used in the US called the Crown Ikarus 286.
If memory serves, they were used in Albany, Portland, Milwaukee, Honolulu and San Mateo County, California…

I can't believe that one accident happened at Willow Springs, that was on 169 on its way to UPS Hodgkins. That could've been my Auntie as one of the victim passenger on that bus but Thank God that she was usually take 395 since she lived on 100th St around that time. Today, I'm surprised that they still have not widen that Archer in Willow Springs, their traffic is still a nightmare during Afternoon Rush Hour.

The one that hit the Tree was working the 147, and according the one incident happened at Willow Springs while working the 169, that Construction around that area is STILL HAPPENING this Day due to La Grange Rd and I-294 Project, Construction been around for over 20 years now, probably another year or two to be completed.

I Never got to Ride the MAN Artics when I Visited Chicago, I did Ride a Reconditioned 7400 Series ARTIC that was a Seattle King County Metro Bus in April 2004 on the 146.
MAN Artics were a Joke! Here in L.A. then RTD (Now Metro) Recieved 30 of them (9200-9229) in the Late Summer of 78 with 2 Rear Doors for its Wilshire (Old Line 83, Later Changed to 20) & the Old 91 Line (Later the 1).
In late 83, Early 84 RTD bought Golden Gate Transit's Entire 10 MAN Artics with a Single Rear Door & Renumbered them to 9250-59.
The Issue with MAN Artics the Damn Busses would hit Obstacles like a Street Post, a Car or Truck, it even Took out a Damn Bus Shelter!
The Problem was is that MAN Engineers did something Wrong to make its Artics Swing Out & Hit Obstacles & that's why RTD Officials said they weren't Buying anymore Artics because of that.
The 40 MAN'S were Quietly Retired by RTD in the Summer of 1990 right after the Blue Line (A Line) Opened up in July 90, when Artics Came back on L.A. Streets in the Fall of 2005, those Busses Came from NABI, Way Different Style from CTA's Now Defunct NABI's.

I didn't care for KKM ones, Most of them were slow, except 7411 was the fastest one I've rode on 147. I really loved 7100s better

Yea I noticed that on a trip to DC I made with my girlfriend back in 2020! Much of DC reminded me a lot of Chicago. U Street felt like Chicago's Hyde Park, until i found my way to Columbia Heights, then it looked like the city's 71st Street 😅

It seems like everyone else has articulated buses with 3 doors. I have ridden 3 other articulated buses other than CTA, Muni ( San Francisco, California ), Broward County Transit- BCT ( Fort Lauderdale , Florida ), & MTA ( New York City ). All of these systems utilized "Big Bens" with 3 sets of doors!

Those used ones from King County Metro in the video were 60ft, with 2 doors. 4 back windows on the rear driver side = 55ft. 5 windows = 60ft.

MARTA had ten of these units 1601-1610. Though I was way to young to see or remember I found out that all ten units moved to Charlotte, NC back in ‘90 but I was only in 1st grade that year
