as someone who’d describe themselves as tone deaf and hasn’t heard the original.. I can’t hear what’s horrible about this.. I’m gonna go listen to the original, but it doesn’t sound that bad to me on first listen tbh. Not anything I could describe as phenomenal, but just another musical song to me on first impression
Edit: alr so I just listened to the original; outside of the very ending and the more extreme ranges? I didn’t notice all that much of a difference. Now, like i said, I haven’t got an ear for music, but based on a lot of other comments I really expected to be able to hear more of a difference in quality between the two
Did somebody twiddle some knobs? Everyone except Lin-Manuel, including the band and the ensemble, has some bad intonation moments. Angelica's voice is perfectly nice, but all that belting, especially trying to take the chest voice way too high, causes sounds that sound better in the theatre, no doubt, than on a recording.
