This song definitely encapsulates the feeling of losing someone you were with to drugs, especially when they're still around. It's like grieving someone who's still alive. the bleakness and weirdness of it all.
I can see how Damon wrote this thinking it would work for South Park after hearing Primus' main theme. Also captures the dank, dark mood of an American trailer park pretty well.

I like the trippy, hip-hoppy style to this song, but I wish Blur also recorded and released the heavier, rockier arrangement they first played at Glastonbury 1998.
Or maybe because whether someone likes a particular piece music or not is because of their own personal tastes or moods? Little minds are the ones who go around calling others 'little minds', ironically.

Too advanced for its time. Would have been fantastic to set the tone in the post-covid season. Specially the part where Tegridy farm burns down and Sharon and Shelley die. The song is poignant, sad, magical, alienated... It has everything for another soul-scarring unforgettable South Park moment in the voice of Randy.
The Rolling Stones were notorious for taking heaps of drugs along with their live fast die young Rock n' Roll image. That's why people joke that it's a miracle Keith Richards is still alive as he was literally addicted to every drug imaginable. What Damon Albarn means by this lyric is that he's lost his long term girlfriend to the drug lifestyle that they both shared. Damon and Justine Frischmann were both addicted to heroin. It tore them apart as Damon spent all his time getting high and making music. This pushed Justine away who was of course dealing with her own personal drug problems at the time. This of course ended in tears which inspired most of the songs you hear on this album as Damon was just a mess & didn't know what to do with his life apart from getting high, being in the studio writing and creating songs.
@@Con-Man1993 Getting high and just being in the studio writing and creating songs would honestly be more productive than what I'm doing with my life, at least.

Damn. I thought I was the only one. I´m actually not talking about the whole of the "13" album and I don´t really know R.E.M.´s "Up" album (gonna catch up on it!). However, there´s one very specific moment on "Caramel", that had me wondering all these years, if there was a reference to R.E.M´s "Low" (Out of Time/ 1988). Not the same, sure, but you´re the first person, that makes me feel like I´m not completely bonkers. lol
Was for the Soundtrack of a South Park Movie or something about it, but was rejected, Blur added the song to the final result because they liked it, they even played it in live
the eerie sound at the beginning makes me feel like im walking through huge supermarket after an apocalypse

begins like a portishead song
wow it does! I think it's the eerie sounds that are being used that make it sound like a portishead song
