Interesting fact: In early 1995 Justine's dad brought her a 4-storey terraced house in Notting Hill, and she and Damon moved in. They lived there until they split up - I think that was 1998 - so for 4 years they were a couple residing in the property. I know the exact house, I think she still owns it but she now lives in America and has done for some years. Blur fans will know what this song is about, Damon has definitely admitted to taking certain substances, and Justine more or less admitted having done so too. It's interesting to walk past that house, to look at the lounge and think "It happened here..."
There is such a heavy feeling of turmoil, insanity, pain and sadness in this song. Holy shit. Like the song is definitely what it feels like to have a meltdown while feeling like you're gripping to your sanity with buttery fingers.
I love that most songs on this album include hidden tracks or demos at the end. Caramel does it the best in my opinion since there are 3 different songs here and they're all totally different. It's like taking a real bad drug trip, nothing lasts long and your imagination takes you somewhere else. it's dreamlike but turned nightmare, especially considering so much of 13 is based off the cataclysmic breakup with Damon and Justine. She's the one who introduced heroin to him in the first place and it couldn't be more thematically appropriate than here.
Definitely a sure-fire way to trip you out. I like it. There's been times I've listen to an album whilst half asleep on the train, and when I slip back into consciousness I feel like I've ended up at a completely different song but the track number hasn't changed...and then I'm like whoa, that is time? That's what hidden music can do.
Brit pop was dead and six feet under, but Caramel was the new sunrise, when i heard this song i thought: "Well, this is how the music will be in the future". Blur ahead their time. 2023 and this song still sooooo fresh.
This and Battle were the best tracks on 13. Well just about Blur's entire catalog really. Damon's falsetto is one of the most beautiful things recorded in the 90s/00s.
I can't name no other album that sounds like 13. Even albums that this takes inspiration from don't sound like this. That's how you know you made a classic album.
Amazing to think this is 21 years old, sounding so vital and fresh forever. It's brilliant how dark and catchy this whole album is. Such pain and depression all over the tracklist, yet it's a strangely energizing and uplifting experience too, every single listen. Absolutely one of the best albums ever.

As I said to someone below, it's about quitting smoking heroin, in an attempt to improve a relationship with someone that got you onto the heroin in the first place, who then ultimately chooses the heroin over you.
I can't truly put it to words how much love this beautiful song. So many emotional memories are attached to this song. It's hard to believe how much a song can mean to you, but this one does just that for me. I hope to never forget it.

@@JackWulfff I agree. As Alex said in his book: there was blood making this album. Not only Damon's post breakup and heroin addiction. There was also Graham's alcoholism and depression, Dave's post divorce and Alex... I read somewhere he was feeling also somewhat depressing, lonely and empty by hooping party in London. So all the four of them had a lot to transmit through their own instruments/collaborations.
Brilliant. My favourite Blur song. It's very dark.....The sounds explored and created on this song are breathtaking. A never ending treat. The centrepiece of a fine album for me.

Part of the holy trinity thats Battle, Caramel and Trimm Trabb; here everything is on point: alarm-like, siren-like, even metronome like fifths in the guitar, a ghostly harmonium, gloomy lyrics, a slow buildup to restless drums and bass before the explosive catharsis that pays off.
