    About Blur:
    Blur were formed in 1989 by Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree and signed with Food/EMI the same year. Announcing their arrival with debut album Leisure in 1991, Blur continued to revolutionise the sound of English popular music with second release Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993). Five successive UK #1 albums followed - with Parklife (1994) and The Great Escape (1995) helping to propel the band to mass popularity in the UK and beyond. The eponymous Blur was released in (1997) and seventh album Think Tank (2003) was Blur’s first as a three-piece after the temporary departure of founding guitarist Graham Coxon.
    Twenty one years after the release of their debut album, 2012 saw Blur 21: The Box, the band's body of work compiled and gathered together into one box. Their most recent release as a four-piece, the critically acclaimed chart-topping album The Magic Whip (2015), started life in Hong Kong when the band had an unexpected break in touring in May 2013.

It's everything which led to that perfect moment in my life at that time before shit got real & everything that was about to fall apart. It's the sound of the 90's ending.

    Although this song was demoed in 1992 it sums up Blurs position perfectly during that year. On a long tour in the States to pay debts, internal friction, losing momentum in the UK, drinking heavily and nearly being cut by food records. They came through it thank God but reminds me of those stormy times. It was Damon's belief that pulled them through. One of their darkest but best songs imho.

      I feel the same way, and have the same age. They were a special band, because they kind of grew "darker", more experimenting and "adult" at the same time as I did, after having been a big fan of their earlier, more naive sound too. Perfect soundtrack for growing up, I have to say. Damon is a fucking genius. :)

      It seemed like Damon was trying to continue the same magic of Sing when he first made the demo, and that was probably the reason why he shelved it as well. Then years later he rediscovered it and decided it wasn't a bad idea to make another song like Sing, especially with the band's new perspective on things.

    • @countrybadsaladman1773
      @countrybadsaladman1773 3 года назад +12

      @@k-leb4671 I have a different theory. But first: "13" is my favourite Blur album, so don´t get me wrong. However, I think William Orbit doesn´t get enough credit for his awesome production. To me it feels like Blur didn´t have many song ready, when they went into the studio and we owe a lot to Orbit, who made this album so special. Took everything apart to put it back together and made it work. If you look at the number of remixes of old stuff that came with "13", I think either Blur brought a lot of unfinished older titles themselves or Orbit made them in order to have enough to work with. And from what I´ve read and heard "1992" is indeed an unfinished idea from 1992 (maybe with different or additional lyrics). Again, I love this album, however, it was made at a point, when Blur and their members really struggled on many levels. Orbit made this album to quite some extend ( except for Coffee & TV and Tender, which in themself sound rather different to the rest).

    • @countrybadsaladman1773

      @@robsdianten1 Yes, it does. However, I think it´s perfectly placed and I wasn´t exactly talking about "No Distance Left To Run" in my previous comment. This is a rather homogenous song, in which Graham uses an open G tuning on the guitar, that actually finds a lot of use in Blues ( we all love that warm, intimate progression on the guitar, don´t we?). Maybe that´s why it sounds different to many other songs on the album, while I´m sure he used different tunings before and also to quite some extend in his solo works.

I enjoy the gloomy sounds of both, and I find both have a bit of an abstract "Revolution #9" feel, but generally I lean more towards the least "popularly noticed" pieces. . . still, the end of this reminds me of the last works of Sparklehorse.

    This is my fav Blur song (tied with Black Book)... some details I like about it:
    At the very start you can hear some mixing glitch or something like that, and you can hear the piano playing a note (this is similar to the sound of a guitar in Gorillaz' "Faust"); It's followed by a little piano solo (I dont know how to call properly); Dave's percussion is genius in here, maybe even more than their bandmates; Alex trademark of song within a song; The fact the song is actually a lost media found by them; The lyrics actually sound something written back in 1992 by Damon; An acoustic steel guitar you can hear faintly throughout the song, almost blended with the piano; Damon harmonizing a "la la la la lah" when the solo is going; The song is quiet and noisy at the same time - while the sound effects are going crazy, you can hear the juxtaposition of this and the distorted guitar being calmly played (evident at moments like 3:40 and 4:57); and Graham being Graham, which is hardly a 'detail' - but it must be cited.
    Strangely, what kind of "disturbs" me in this song is the piano, because it reminds me of other songs from Damon that have nothing to do with this sonic landscape which is this song (some gorillaz and TGTBTQ songs), but at the same time it actually blends well. It's like if you stop to hear it as a separate thing, it kinds sounds like Damon himself is featuring in a Blur (Dave, Alex and Graham) song, as a guest artist... Maybe it's because each of the band members in this song are so characteristic of each (except Dave, who outdoes himself imo).

      Blur did "experimental" before Radiohead. And unlike Yorke, Albarn was able to marry his sonic adventures to decent songs.

      It's the usage of both a major/minor tonic chord (D and D minor in the same progression), along with the sonic experimentation and studio sounds.

      It was in fact a lost demo from 1992 that they found again when they were recording this album. That's why they named it 1992
