I believe the Moriya shrine is based on the actual place called Suwa Shrine in Nagasaki on top of Tamazono Mountain which also has a very long stairs branching to the other places near the shrine. People there also celebrate the Onbashira Festival which they'll slide 16 meticulously chosen fir trees which are cut clean to serve as a post down the mountain and erect it on each corners of the shrine complex or (perhaps) replace the old ones.

In League of Legends, some of the old champion designers were huge touhou fans. Not only Lux is direct a reference to Marisa Kirisame, Orianna was also inspired by Hong Meiling and, later on, inspired by Youmu and Myon. Orianna was called during development as Yomu and her champion spotlight shows a walfa resembling Sakuya instead of her splash art during Phreak's gameplay.

    • @RenanMMz

I strongly believe Yasuo is based on SWR/Soku Youmu as well. In these games, Youmu has a triple slash combo where the third hit is a knock-up and strongly resembles Yasuo's EQ, a projectile-blocking blue wall and one of her spellcards is a knock-up that keeps your opponent in the air with multiple slashes before slamming them to the ground, very similar to Yasuo's R.
I may be wrong and he could just be based on samurai tropes, but the wind wall just makes it too similar to be a coincidence.

One of the wildest Touhou hijacks I know of happened around the announcement of Pokémon Scarlet/Violet (before the box legendaries were even revealed), with one of the Touhou spoof logos, specifically one with Flandre and Sumireko. At one point, a regional manager for Gamestop was making a poster for people to reserve copies of the game. Somehow, the person ended up putting the Flandre and Sumireko logos on this poster, and sent it out to be printed by random Gamestop stores all around the Northeastern US. I think there was a lot of places where it happened, but the 3 I remember are Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York. The one sad thing is that I'm only a state away for New York, and if I was aware of the hijack and went tto a Gamestop I likely could of found it. But, I only learned of it after the fact, and didn't go to a Gamestop just by coincidence 😔
I haven't seen any hijacks myself yet unfortunately, but I have my eyes out and hope to someday. Although, two people have recognized some of my Touhou things in public once (keychains on my backpack and my fumos), so that's neat

i couldn't help but see this video with a big smile on my face, it's great to see Touhou being referenced in various mediums, the ones that i personally experienced where:
-The spilling the milk youtube videos, one of the members (Korewaeden)has a lot of fumos which can be seen eveyrtime he appears on camera, also on the videos from his own channel he frequently uses Touhou images for reactions (i really reccommend both channels btw, the guys are pretty funny)
-The chilean tv show FTP once did an entire segment dedicated to Touhou, featuring fans inluding female cosplayers who explained the lore and basics of the franchise, pretty badass
-A Mexican cookie's brand "galletas troyanas" used imaged of both Alice and Reimu to promote the cookies
-The mobile game D4DJ has A LOT of Touhou songs, remixes and even covers, my favorite is their Help me Eirin one, since it's nice to hear the characters being voiced by actual girls this time
-A....let's say controversial/laughing stock anime reviewer called Doomentio has an editorial called nostrafort and made a suprisingly GOOD and wholesome Touhou comic
-a Tewi Fumo appeared on a russian news report, the reporter even played with her
-Of course the now famous Bucket head confirmed moment from KFC's twitter
-Finally this is a personal one, but one of the ghost children in an Episode of cartoon network's Villanous looks almost exactly like Koishi but with longer hair

In the case of Guardian Tales, I think that line might just be dedicated to classic space shooters in general. Mainly because of how much more direct the references to Super Mario Bros., First Blood, Live A Live, FMA, Terminator, Master Chef, Kitchen Nightmares, etc. are. Also because there's a 3D space shooter section as you try to rescue Santa from a terrorist space ship.
Would non-GT players believe me if I told them that the game has a rather compelling plot on top of the surreal humor?

Everyone has talked about how in League of Legends Orianna was also based from Youmu/Sakuya/Hong Meiling, but the Lux reference goes further than that.
Each champion comes with a skin on release, and Lux's skin is Sorcerer Lux, which can be considered a reference given the heavy inspiration the champion designer took from Marisa Kirisame.
... Also, her ultimate is called Final Spark. On release, it was called "Finales Funkeln", which is german for Final Spark. This directly references Marisa's Last Spell in IN: Magicannon ~ "Final Spark"

I'm pretty sure 2ch is read as futaba-channel. Also, still feels weird whenever Cirno is read as Sir-no instead of Cheer-no. Anyways, yeah, Touhou is super embedded in Japanese culture, and because of its doujin nature people can safely reference it or make fan works of it, which is what allows it to be a very evergreen series despite as of late the main games haven't been very popular.

    • @FengLengshun

@@1MaxVader1 we read it that way because the original work is Japanese? Japan use a syllable writing system. Every letter is read one way, though there may be differences in tone. Cirno's name is writter as チルノ, Chiruno. Not サーノ or Saano (Japanese writes Sir as Saa, see サー・ナイトアイ Sir Nighteye). So for a lot of us, it's really, really obvious it should be Cheer-no, because that's literally what's written (unless you're going full Japanese and pronouncing it Chiruno ofc).

It's not the first time Neptunia has referenced Touhou.
Gakuen Game Neptune: Katsudou Dairy's first chapter has the cast trying to come up with ideas for a video game to which Neptune literally recommends making a Touhou clone after making several other unoriginal ideas. Nep's pretty lucky Shanghai Alice wasn't brought into the Neptunia franchise until recently or else I'm sure Alice would've been glad to give Nep the good old Histy treatment.
Also, Bullet Heaven (a literal reversal on the genre name Bullet Hell) and Epic Battle Fantasy 3 reference Touhou too with the latter being officially called Epic Battle Fantasy 3.3, having many Danmaku patterns that reference various Spell Cards such as Flandre and Utsuho and on Kongregate the references come from two achievements called Imperishable Player and Ten Desires while the former as an attack called "Bullet Hell" and even completes the reference by having the character Lance say "I'd like to see them get through that with one life and no bombs!"
Although I'm slightly concerned about those individuals who wanted to become actual dolls. I wouldn't call that a strange addiction, I'd call that an unhealthy obsession that needs major help. Either rehab or therapy.
Venus, one of the folks featured in the same episode as Emily and another person named Justin, literally travelled to the Republic of Korea to have weight loss surgery despite weighing only 53 kg (or 117 lbs) at the time of the procedure. She claimed it took her 50 attempts (which involved calling doctors from around the world) before she eventually got someone to do it which eventually resulted in her going to a hospital after the surgery with injuries on her stomach, requiring stomach medication and an IV Drip.

i don't know if it's a reference but in Rabi-Ribi if you hold attack button (hammer) and move to the sides you can move slowly like using the focus and also you can watch your hitbox, also the game is bullethell.
and some attacks could be a reference to some spells but idk the names, but one of them definitely most be a reference to Marisa's Master spark (one of the attacks of ??? in the last chapter) and in the same same boss fight, you have to endure her final attack (Last spell?) like in some bosses where you have to resist until the time is up. also, there are a few sections like bullet hell just like 2hu.

I have one to throw in here myself!
In a mod for Terraria, admittedly the most famous one, Calamity, there is a few directly touhou referencing items/weapons!
The "Scarlet Devil", though not a spell card, is the name of the game. It's a late game spear that is a slow throw but does a boat load of damage, and releases several homing, red orbs that also do damage. Aka, Remillia's Spear
    Not the only one.
Theres also a summoning weapon called "Resurection butterfly", which copies the name of her spellcard, is a pink hand fan, and using it summons several, small, etherial butterflies and is a clear reference to Yuyuko.
There are more, but those 2 are the most fleshed out
Though its my own personal speculation that the "Last Prism" in vanilla terraria is also a Marisa reference, if only subtle
