It shows that people who are mechanically minded average people, can make it easier for the general public to understand. I wish people had a more general public mindset, so that they could teach others easily like this video has.

I was in debate over whether the noise on my crown vic was related to a bad differential or the drivers side wheel bearing. The noise in this video is practically a carbon copy of what I’m hearing, being a deep hum that increases in pitch relative to speed, though mine is MUCH more faint than this. Wheel bearing area began spewing axle grease so now im certain I’ll need a new wheel bearing and a new hub seal. Definitely glad I found this video because I was worried that i had a bad pinion shaft, but found out that the pinion shaft noise is way different! Thanks again!

The change in sound is more from the change in lateral loading than weight relief. Sometimes one side of the race gets started with pitting and goes to heck while the other race stays relatively smooth, hence the difference in sound pushing right and left. Excellent video. Informative and not a time waster. Thumbs up and subscribing now :-)

The noise change while steering *may* indicate which side is faulty. However, wheel bearings are double ball bearings. Depending on whether the inner or outer is worn will affect this test. Most likely because people don't expect to view a 3 minute video to hear a 5-10 second noise. A lot of these auto videos are longer than they need to be. Just a thought. Thank goodness for stonktusk for indexing the video to when the noticeable noise actually started at 2:33. Cheers!

FOR ANYONE WHO HAS THE SOUND, BUT CHANGING THE WHEEL BEARING DID NOT MAKE IT GO AWAY, MY NOW NEW MECHANIC HAS FOUND THE ANSWER TO MINE AND MAYBE IT WILL HELP SAVE YOU HUNDREDS!!! I thought for months it was my wheel bearing, other mechanics told me it was too. But I took it to another guy at a shop in a gas station self owned by himself, and he said it wasn’t that. It was my back shocks and needed new wheels they had wave like appearance and feel to them that was causing the exact noise of a wheel bearing it imitates so similar it is hard to tell! Please make sure you know what it is first DONT just go by noise!! Feel the inside wear of your tires

iirc, when my roommate's bearings kept going bad we would also notice the vehicle slowing down at low speeds (or premature deceleration?). Hard to explain, but definitely noticed the vehicle slowing down on it's own when it wasn't supposed to. Instead of gliding like normal until putting pressure on the brake to stop. Once this gets really bad it WILL start smoking and has the potential to catch fire due to metal-on-metal friction. Which is very hard to cool down with water because it IS metal which is hot and it's hard to actually get water to the source of the heat. Not to mention, a drastic change in temperature w cold water hitting hot metal has the potential to cause even more damage (temp shift cracking of metal, etc) when this happens.
My advice if it gets really bad. Don't drive it! Get it fixed asap. Better than it catching fire or causing more damage which will cost much more money.

The easyist way to determine bad wheel bearing is just jack up your car spin the wheel and touch the shock absorber plate near in the top of your tire and you can feel rough while the wheel is rotating.
