Cash Cabin
Shel Silverstein
What's your favorite Shel Silverstein song?
Boy named sue sung by Johnny Cash and Ones on the way sung by Loretta Lynn
The entire Sloppy Seconds album by Dr Hook! Carry Me, Carrie...ah... 😊forget about it!
I admit I had to look up a list of his songs, but on that list my favorite was "Cover of the Rolling Stone."
Beans Taste Fine.
the Winner....
J D needs his own channel.
I'm in!
Terrifically talented and funny as hell. What a great friend he is, I bet. Otis is so good I feel like I know him after all these YT offerings
Absolutely!!!! Wish he would!!!
I laughed WAY TOO HARD over this one !!! I love this guy!!!
Thank you so much for turning me on to so many great people! I’m loving the Shack Shakers and JD ✌️😎
My favorite Shel Silverstein song is "Sylvia's Mother". It's such a catchy ditty, then you listen to the words that are being said from a remembered conversation... Shel wasn't known for being overly emotive, unless it was when he would bend space and time signature for a laugh. But man, that song...❤️
Wilkes is a true American hero
Seeing JD in concert is like watching a tornado on a stage. Love these stories. 'Boy Named Sue' would be my fav.
I think JD Wilkes is a new favorite person... I could listen to his narrative for hours. Would be amazing to play music with him
Check out his book the vine that ate the south... Great read
Shel Silverstein songs!? WOW! Boy Named Sue, Cover of the Rolling Stone, Sylvia's Mother. The list is never ending
February snow my favorite shel song right now, the devil and billy markham tomorrow love them all
He's not wrong: Barry Gibb had bought the house. During renovation (in '07, IIRC) it caught fire and burned completely down. I don't know that the collective citizenship of Hendersonville ever forgave Gibb for that happening.
I can believe it!
Here’s a sweet guided tour by one of the current owners:

Thank you! I thought I remembered something about that! J.D. makes you think about stuff, you know?
See? I knew I hated The Bee Gees for some reason or other. Thought it had to do with Disco, though.
I love this guy!
This cat is a trip.Bet he is fun to hang with.Another cool show man 👍
My favorite song he wrote is Sylvia's Mother by Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show...It's one of those songs that I have the greatest memories of from my misspent youth, released in 1972 when I was only 17 years old. Of course it hung around on the airwaves for years and years. A best friend of mine, sadly deceased who died way too young, and I wore that song out when we were out on our "adventures"...When it would come on we'd sing along almost screaming & butchering it in two part harmony. I mean every time we heard it, he'd glance at me and I at him as soon as we'd hear the first note and off we'd go. Precious memories, and of course we always sang it better after a few beers...LOL God I miss him & this song brings him back from the dead every time I hear it...A song & what you associate with it are very powerful things.
But when it comes to Shell himself the favorite thing I have of his is a first edition of his book "Where the Sidewalk Ends" A gift given me long ago by another friend that knew I loved poetry.
"Where the Sidewalk Ends is one of the most challenged children's book because many parents view it as rebellious. In 1986 the book was banned from West Allis Milwaukee school libraries because of drug reference, suicide, death, and a disrespect for truth and authority."
Love to listen to JD telling his stories...He's a blast "And I hate him"...LOL
The Colonel and I got our start together on the Popularity Showboat and the Oldtown Tavern in Paducah, KY. It's good to see he's still wacky as ever. Huge influence in my music. One time we were playing San Franscisco Bay Blues and I said to him, "Man, it would be cool if we had a kazoo on this tune." Before I knew it, the good Colonel whipped out his trusty comb and a piece of paper, and WAHLA! He made a kazoo, and made my wish come true. It was at that time I realized this guy can turn chicken shit into chicken salad. JD,YOU ARE PURE MAGIC!
"... from another species" Love it. JD Wilkes, you luckyyyy Dawg.
Love all Shel wrote for Dr. Hook. Silvia's Mother...
I love his misremembered stories.."that cabin was burned down by one of the Beegees" LOL!!!! What a hoot this guy is!!
I second that emotion!
He wasn't that far off. Barry Gibb bought Cash's house and it burned down not long after he bought it.
@@bigreed67 yea, I was just laughing at the way he said it. LOL
Glad to hear that it went well for JD at the Cash Cabin. You never know what you might be getting into with that cast of characters.
I am not sure what my favorite Shel Silverstein song is but I have good memories of hearing his songs on the radio. They were always good for a laugh. My favorite John Anderson song though is definitely Seminole Wind.
Great interview... Col. JD is a National treasure and im glad people like you get the word out.
JD is too much. Lol. Love his interviews. He's the shit.❤️
So nice that you had J.D. on. I have been so fortunate to see him many times with the Shack Shakers and also by himself. Just got to see him and a wonderful woman on bucket bass and mouth horn ( you had to be there) opening for the first date of the Jimbo Mathus tour. He was spectacular!!! Could not believe we got to see such a great billing. Jimbo and his band were also incredible. If you ever get to see him or the Legendary Shack Shakers do not pass it up. Both Jimbo and JD were so gracious after the show. Can't wait til the Shack Shakers come back to the same venue later this year. Now as far as favorite Shel songs go, I really
Enjoy Numbers on Bobby Bares down and Dirty album.
Boy Named Sue & 25 Minutes To Go.
Also recall during my elementary school days his book of poems Where The Sidewalk Ends was a big deal to acquire. Always seemed to be out. ... Most requested to be read out loud by the librarian on Friday's as well.
- Thanks for the interview. Much enjoyed & appreciated. ... ✌️
Love The Winner and Marie Laveaux. Love to hear his screech on the song as well.
Twistable Turnable Man. JD is terrific. What an interview!
We need more of JD.
Don't we all have our own narrative of misremembered facts. Just some peoples misrememberings are hilarious. Much thanks to you and JD for brightening my morning.
Just love these videos of JD man. I've been a fan of his work for some time now. It's nice to learn more about him and hear his tales. He seems like one of those good natured characters that I would get along well with...
JD is awesome!
Oh favorite Shell song is the winner.
The one and only time a buddy and I ever went to legendary local venue, The Casbah, in San Diego, out of boredom, not knowing who was playing (we went dozens of times to see specific shows), we walked in grabbed some beers and staked out our spot on the floor while the headliners set up. Then, The Legendary Shack Shakers (David Lee lineup) took the stage and BLEW OUR MINDS. What a great show to stumble upon. Fan ever since. I'll never look at lederhosen the same again.
I like listening to J.D. telling inside stories . I remember him playing solo banjo , harmonica and singing sitting on a chair in the country somewhere on PBS . Great stuff . ( the something sessions , don't remember the name )
That might be that on thing they do in that what was the Small Sun Studio that Elvis and all the greats got there start at in the 1950's. I forget the name of it Studio Sessions? The place has a new name, and they make mention of it each time the name of the studio and have all the gold records up in recording booth from when Sun owned it. It is only a 30 or 45 minute program at best.
@@caseysmith544 They are called " The Lost River Sessions " and are available on RUclips
My favorite thing is to open RUclips and see there is a new upload from Otis.
This week's Die Hards meeting warned of a upcoming dry spell and it bummed me out a little!! So far it's been a great week!!!
I thought that Shel had only written that song until l got older & discovered " The Giving Tree" & his other songs..... What an AMAZING CHARACTER......
I met JD in Charlotte. I'm sure he doesn't remember, but he signed a CD for me and we talked for a minute. He did a great set at the Visualite.
Thanks Otis! Great story and Thank JD for me!
JD is a fun guy. Visited with him after he opened for The Rev & Unknown Hinson one night. JD was crowdsurfing playing Harmonica. Insanely good. He’s like Iggy Pop from the sticks.
good stuff thanks Otis
Love this guy! Thks old bud for the vid.
Favorite Shel Silverstein song is....."I got stoned and I missed it". But not the over disco-fied version by the Dr. Hook band.
Yep, it was Barry Gibb. The floor refinishers set the flammable finish on fire. I saw the place not long after the Cash home burned down with the main beams charred with a strong burn smell in the air, in the driveway. Whatever happened to Kelly Pickler? She has that Grand Ole Opry fun attitude, had the one hit. Great story. I was lucky enough to meet John Carter Cash at The Rutledge a few times.
love this dude
I love this guy...'on Susan's Floor' recorded by Hank Jr. on his Hank Jr. and Friends album with Toy Caldwell and Charlie Daniels among others was I believe a Shel Silverstein song?? I found out the story behind who Susan actually was too by reading about it in Waylon's book. I bet you could refresh my memory about it but she had all night parties for those pill freaks back in the days of 60s Nashville. I guess Roger Miller was always there and Willy Nelson...Bobby Bare...ect ect.
Otis, l saw Johnny Cash at Toad's Place in the 90s in New Haven CT. (a rock venue)
John Carter Cash opened the show & up next was June, Johnny did two shows, l think 7pm & 10pm ..........l think...not sure but, l know that he played two shows. (I don't know the capacity, maybe 800-1000) l've seen Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros there Ramones, Plasmatics, Paul Westerberg, lan Hunter, David Johansen.
I’m with JD on musically talented people…once tried desperately to sing and play guitar…got to where I could play the notes but the music eluded me…my daughter is very talented playing the violin and got a cheap electronic keyboard she taught her self to play…life ain’t fair LOL
I hear ya. Got a guitar for my tenth bday. Loved trying to play it, but I tried to restring it cause I’m left handed. Lol, my mother was furious, and gave it away.
My favorite thing by Shel Silverstein was an epic poem- "The Devil And Billy Markham" that was published in Playboy mag back in the 70s. It's about a Nashville songwriter. Otis, if you haven't seen it, please check it out.
Shell is an amazing talent. Near impossible to pick a favorite. All of the Lullabys Legends and Lies album is awesome. I am gonna go with "The Winner" or "Marie Laveau" (spelling?). I also love his story "The Giving Tree" Thanks again for the videos Otis.
A boy named sue or the taker are my two faves I’d say.
Charley Crockett will be at the Hi-Fi on August 26th. I would not miss that, he’s special
My favourite Shel Silverstein song is A Boy Named Sue (the Johnny Cash version, of course). Such a fun song.
I also really enjoy The Ballad of Lucy Jordan by Marianne Faithfull. Very moving.
Cover of the Rolling Stone is fun too.
Holy crap it’s hilarious trying to follow where J D is taking you….
If you tied JD's hands, he probably wouldn't be able to talk. Thanks, Otis!
Bury me in my shades
❤
Oh man he is a funny guy
I'm just happy he shouted out Shelton, I think I paid 15 bucks and he played for almost 4 hours.
I tried to get "I Got Stoned And I missed It" picked for my senior class song so it would be played at graduation but it got voted down much to my disappointment. Sylvia's Mother, Cover of the Rolling Stone, Queen Of The Silver Dollar(just because it played over and over on the juke box in a tavern called the Silver Dollar in my hometown back in the 70's and it's burned into my brain), Freakin At The Freaker's Ball, Put Another Log On The Fire............
Name one favorite Shel Silverstein song? You have got to be kidding me!
Freakin at the Freaker's Ball
The Bee Gees ...
Hil-fuckin-lairious!
Old New Orleans Custom (Tompall)
Quaaludes Again ranks way up there.
Yuio frend whit yuo in video hahahaha
I'm just guessing, but is JD (as we say in the UK) a bit of a 'character'?
Tell you what: I’m a bigger fan of J. D. Wilkes’ storytelling than I am of anything written or performed by Silverstein. Sorry. Thanks, Otis. J. D. is a whole lot of funny.
The Unicorn
I wonder why JD would disparage and disrespect Frank Sinatra Jr. like that? (7:07) I get his point, that some progeny of legendary artists don't share or inherit their parents talents, but Frank Jr. was an odd choice to illustrate this point. I had the honor and privilege to work as a backline tech on many Frank Jr. shows while he was still alive, and he was talented, generous, a class act, and a pleasure to work with. He was his father's MD for many years, and the Frank Jr. show was a very respectful tribute to not only his father, but to all the songwriters, composers, arrangers, and band leaders that contributed throughout his father's great career. The touring band members, and crew were always great to work with too. Local orchestra contractors, and local musicians loved getting the call for this show even though it was an early call, and a long day of rehearsals before doors, because it was chance to read and play from the historic Frank Sinatra show book. Frank Jr. certainly didn't need the money, but he loved working, and kept a lot great guys working in his touring band and crew, and there were very few touring acts then and almost none now that would hire as many local musicians and crew as his show did.
I got stoned
Like Pablo Escobar
