Ecuagenera Pop-up In Indonesia - My Experience With Collecting Pre-orders From Ecuador!

  • Ecuagenera is a aroid nursery from Ecuador with a lot of efforts spent on conservation of aroids in-situ. In this episode, I cover the first Ecuagenera event held in Indonesia as I attempt to pick up my pre-orders from them. It was a disaster thanks to import customs and an inefficient pick up system. I share the full experience of this pre-order pick-up fiasco, interviewing Mr Pepe Portiilla who is the founder of Ecuagenera as well as a friend Uthe, who was badly affected by this process. I had to split this episode into two, with tomorrow’s episode focusing on rehab and rescue of the plants. If you are interested in that be sure not to miss it!

I wanted to pause this and say THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS!!! when I got into the plant world , I would see people with hundreds , the more - the more rare - the bigger the better !! And I tried to maintain that quickly , I went into debt (not a lot but even a few hundred bucks is too much) and now I’m at a point where every single day I’m spending hours tending to plants , rehabs , seedlings , cuttings , not to mention I am a mom to 3 children - one of them beings 8’months old! I’m overwhelmed I’d an understatement . So I really appreciate you being transparent about the “not so good” when collecting plants. We need to bring awareness to this , so others know we’re not alone! Thanks again!!- and I feel excited to watch your journey and follow along purging with you!! Esp the plants that don’t bring me any joy just stress

Remember that time when a lot of people actually afford to buy Ecuagenera plants? The excitment! The thought of buying and caring for new species, imported all the way from across the globe and at reasonable prices, excited us! and I thought those customs issues back in Feb would be sorted out by the time we receive the April batch. Oh I was so wrong. It was even worse than the Feb batch? I mean, the delivery to Bogor, the cuttings incidents? The people from Ecuagenera told me that they will no longer import to Indonesia. So now we should buy Ecuagenera's plants from importers which will cost us 3-4 times than the actual price? *loud sigh

Sean, I'm so sorry that you and your friends are having a horrible time with the shipping from Ecuagenera. I buy a lot from them and I've learned over time to request and pay for Express shipping from Florida. My plants arrive in 2 days in good shape. Starting this year, I've also picked up plants from their pop up events in San Antonio and Houston. The plants from the pop ups are in excellent shape. Perhaps there is a steep learning curve for Ecuagenera in shipping to Indonesia. Once the company figures out the process, I think that the customer experience will improve by leaps and bound. I thank you for this video in particular as I can see that you are just stressed out, but still making the video!

It is 48 hours flight from Ecuador to Philippines with an overnight layover in Qatar whenever i order from Ecuagenera. I also ordered for other people last yr but I stopped this year not due to stress with the logistics but a total disappointment with the importer. Our customs here is already acquainted with plant imports so it usually just takes several hours for them to inspect the plants and then they OK for release from the airport warehouse. from there the importer will bring it to his own place or any nearby place where customers like me can pick them up. We usually order 600 to 1200 plants per shipment (mine is just around 50 to 60 pcs from that). Its really nervewrecking when a delay happens but Ecuagenera gives customers a few days for customers to report any damaged plant upon arrival. I think i will have to agree with you that there are some plants thats already dying even before they reach our countries as the roots are all brown and all leaves yellowing. Either Ecuagenera packed them too early before the flight or maybe have suffered from the sanitizing chemicals.

@@onlyplants Agree! as much as we want to help our local growers and sellers and our country's economy, it was cheaper to buy my dream anthuriums from Ecuador even with the cost of importing them added. We dont have much TC labs here for ornamentals so (Filipino) rare anthurium growers mostly propagate manually which takes more than half a year usually that's why it is pricey. I hope both Philippines and Indonesia catch up on Thailand with tissue culture so that we dont have to endure these stressful situations and consequently, stops the poachers thats raping our forests.

Filipinos aren't even allowed by law to care for Phil endemic plants, so what happens is big farm exporters sell endemic plants to other Asian countries esp Thailand then Phil plant importers, buy our endemic plants propagated via TC mostly from this countries to be sold back to Phil hobbyists. That's the irony & sad state of the Phil plant industry, if ever there is.
