Ouray Colorado is known as the American Switzerland and I can see why! Tucked into the San Juan Mountains, its history dates back to 1876. It is a stunning little mountain town with lots to do for outdoors enthusiasts. Join me as I explore the area and hike to two waterfalls (Cascade Falls and the Box Canyon Falls) as well as a portion of the Perimeter Trail. I will show you a bit of the town and my beautiful campsite in the Uncompahgre National Forest. If you've never heard of Ouray...you need to watch this. :)
Hey Catherine.... I don't know why I didn't think of this before. I follow another full time camping nomad on RUclips. His you tube channel is called Off Grid Back Country Adventures. He is in the CO high country right too. You should check his content out. He does a really good job, just like you. Cheers. Love your videos.
Cat, you have an eye that captures natures beauty, its a real talent. My Sunday morning ritual is to get my cup of coffee and sit down to see what wonderful gift you bring to us with your videos. Thank you.
We met a couple in Durango while at their Aribnb home who said that in the winter they drive up to Ouray to ice limb the waterfall there - it my be Cascade falls. Hard core enough, the husband has a prosthetic leg below the knee of one leg and leads the climb. We left Durango to tour the stunning Million Dollar Hwy and spent the night in Ouray. Wow. What a beautiful setting. Thanks for your wonderful capture of this rugged area.
Wow! That is awesome! When I was home, I volunteered my photography services to a non profit called Life Rolls On. The founder is a quadriplegic. They organization takes folks with physical disabilities and/or missing limbs surfing. Those folks are my heroes. There positive attitudes even with there physical limitations never ceased to amaze me.
@@CatherineGregoryAdventures I was impressed. He had a special ice claw attachment for his prosthesis that enabled him to get a good purchase on the ice. Quite innovative. Around here in the Northwest, there are some trails that are being modified to allow for wheelchair access further up the trails than previously. Why not, eh?
You do such an awesome job so nice to watch your work you should get paid a lot for that keep it up very relaxing thank you so much for all your hard work
Wow beautiful area I would to love visit. Looks like great motorcyle riding roads too. Lovely little town. Probably a tasty craft beer could be had there!
Hooray for Ouray. I have been through the town 5 times, and have never stopped to see the local sights. I have been through there in 87, 88, 95, 96 and 2011. Evertime I go through there I say; the next time...Great show today. Vaughn
New Subscriber here! Loved this video and the way you captured the area! We work hard at our hiking videos as well, but you do a tremendous job, well done!
YOU'RE - A. That's how you say it. I've been going there off an on my entire life. It's sort of my second home. I love everything about it ... including the drive from Ouray to Silverton, known as the Million Dollar Highway. I've climbed every cliff around the town ... and so have my sons, who I began taking with me several years ago. It's a great place ... and thanks for the feature on your channel. Best wishes.
I've spent a week in Ouray on two different occasions about a decade ago, and I loved it. I just booked a trip for next summer--what activities do you recommend? Fishing? Kayaking? I'm a solo traveler, so are there any hikes that would safe all alone?
I went to Ouray many years ago and I did the Box Canyon Falls and I believe another falls. It's been so long I forget what it was like there. The town was at that time so small I could just walk from one end to the other. I was staying across from a hot springs place. I guess that is big out there although I wasn't there for that and did not do it but I do remember watching people go into the spring. Another thing I remember about being there is the elevation is around 7,000 ft. and I was there in September and at night it got pretty cold. I had to put on the heat in the morning to take off the chill. I live in Florida so the cooler nights get to me. What a beautiful video you made. I am envious of you. I'm afraid to go outside here in Florida even for a drive with this virus around. Have fun and stay safe! I was going to show you a page on my website of Ouray but I only see one picture. I know I have more photos so I'll be looking for them.
Another AMAZING video Catherine!! The music you selected is excellent; it really fits the video, and the scenery is spectacular!! GREAT JOB once again!!
Thank you for sharing your visit to Ouray. At 72, I still remember my first trip there when I was five years with my parents. My last visit was nearly twenty years. I have lovely memories of our many visits there. It was one of father’s favorite places to visit.
Dear Catherine, at 13:42 into the video there's a cabin, the one closest to the lower left side, it looks like it has your name on it. Hope you are able to save some "stills" of yourself at the waterfall; they are extraordinary. Thank You for taking us on this most extraordinary journey. I can still smell the trees and feel that thin air sun. Beautiful.
ouray is a beautiful place visited there a few years ago and hiked the waterfall trails around the city. planning to return soon and also stop in silverton as well
My favorite area of Colorado. The drive between Durango and Ouray is incredible. Silverton is a great little mountain town also. A great backpacking and mountain climbing trip is up into the Chicago Basin between Silverton and Durango, mountain goats everywhere. Another beautful backpacking trip is up to Blue Lakes near Telluride, especially in the fall. Gotta love the San Juans!
Great video of a spectacular area. I recommend that you return in mid to late September and do the Million dollar drive to Durango. The Aspen trees in autumn amp up the beauty of the area 1000%
Catherine, I love all your videos, they're so refreshing as well as your appreciation of nature. I've been a silent subscriber for awhile, but when I saw you were in my neighborhood. I had to chime in! I live right over the mountains 15 miles SW of Telluride out in the boonies at the base of the Wilsons (the last range of the San Juans jutting west south of Telluride). I'd been in an apartment in Mountain Village (at the ski area) for 3 years previously, and your videos were such a nice vicarious escape to get out on a virtual road and/or hiking trip. I own a little print shop in Telluride called Happy Print and have been in this area almost 25 years now. But, just working alot on my business for the last many years and loved discovering your RUclips channel and all the travel you take and your excitement and passion for what you're doing. You go to some of my favorite places, and a few I don't know. This Ouray video was very beautiful. I'm an artist and avid photographer and I really appreciate you for sharing and putting your work out there. Thanks so much for making the effort! It really does help, enrich and bring joy to some of us out here who may need a vicarious escape and positive note at times. And, at this ime, I'm sure it's helping alot of other folks. So, thanks. And, if you get camping near Woods Lake SW of Telluride, PM me, I'd love to invite you up to the property for a coffee. Stay safe and Happy travels! ...the San Juans are gorgeous! Curious where you're off to next. ;) LG
Another BEAUTIFUL video Catherine. I was able to watch a few more yesterday around the birth of 3 Long haired Chihuahua Puppies. The music in the background I really believed helped the mama in her labor. She did great. With a world so full of issues it would do everyone good to get outdoors and enjoy God's creation. Perhaps there would be more love for each other and appreciation for our Heavenly Father's creation for us. Thank you so much for bringing this AWESOME creation of God to us. I truly believe we all need to open our hearts and minds to God's love. Creation cries out with HIS Majesty!
I've watched a few channels of RUclipsrs going to Ouray within the Jeeping community. I was shocked you were taking your truck camper up there. You' re brave woman , Cat. Once again, awesome videography, Ouray is on my bucket-list as well.
Wonderful Vid... My teenage son just got back from a Week trip to Ouray with his friends. He was telling me about hiking the Perimeter Trail, and how beautiful it was.. It was great seeing your video of where he was.. I remember loving Ouray when I passed through it back in the 80's..
Another great video. Red Mountain Pass is beautiful but can be very dangerous in a snowstorm. I went over it in a blizzard once and had to open the door and stick my foot out to see if there was road next to my truck! Thank God for the snowplow that came along. There is a memorial along the road for the snowplow drivers who lost their lives. Thanks for taking us along on your journeys.
Nice job the million dollar hwy is a beauty of a drive , I'm running into some Fed and State camp grounds open and closed . Canadian border closed no Alaska today . Another great video . Go Cat
Loved the perspective of the waterfall shot. Great for appreciating the grandeur. You looked so tiny compared to what I expected. Bambi was adorable too.
Always love your videos, but I think this is your best ever! I'm putting this location on my bucket list to visit when I get on the road full-time. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Spectacular - you're dragging me back to Colorado for Ouray! Thanks for showing the town. Great mountain gravel road you were on there. You sure know how to ride out a pandemic - stay well and keep showing us the beautiful places - compliments on the excellent photography capturing the great scenery of the San Juan Mountains.
This area is stunning. You presented the area like a professional. What is the name of the unpaved road you were on when you were told your rig would clear the hangover. We plan to visit Colorado this fall. You have convinced us to definitely visit Oray while there.
I always look forward to your videos. Beautiful scenery and your edits are the work of a craftsperson. Also who ever added a thumbs down, I can't imagine this type of video would not brighten anyone's day.
0:10 - there's my house! Nicely done video. When you come back some hikes to consider include Bear Creek, Portland Loop, Corbett/Dallas Loop, Sutton Mine, Oak Creek/Silvershield. There's also the Uncompahgre Gorge that you missed which is the word's latest ice climbing park in the winter - but wait - they just opened a Via Ferrata in the gorge. When you turned your truck around because of the overhang you missed the Camp Bird Mine (Canyon Creek Rd), access to Yankee Boy Basin (spectacular wildeflowers), as well as Govenor Basin (and also 4x4 Imogene Pass to Telluride, the 2nd highest 4x4 pass in North America). Hiking via Yankee Boy Basin includes My Sneffels, the only 14er in the immediate Ouray area. The are was used for a lot of the original True Grit shooting...there's so much to see around here I hope you can make it back and spend more time, especially in September when the aspens start changing - its amazing.
I love Ouray! We camped there about six years ago after spending three weeks in the heat and sand of Moab, Utah. The coolness and alpine air were heaven! The hot spring showers were a balm to my parched body and soul. So glad you’re there experiencing it for yourself.
BREATHTAKING BEAUTY COLORS SCENERY VIEWS VIDEO ! YOU COULD SEE THE OLDER BUILDINGS FROM THE NEWER ONES WHEN YOU'RE GOING THROUGH TOWN . VERW BEAUTIFUL AREA . DID YOU GET A CHANCE TO EAT IN TOWN ? GORGEOUS VIDEO ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! ENJOYED !
Lots of familiar sites in this one too! Familiar too with the road up to Yankee Boy Basin, one of the best wildflower spots in Colorado. Thanks for the closing shots of 550 and all the gorgeous scenery I'm missing out on this summer.
What a wonderful surprise to have such a beautiful video to watch while I had my sunday coffee. The first falls is like Silver Falls I took a month ago in Oregon, I posted photos. Yes, everywhere is very crowded this year. Your right, the 5am club get the best trail time. Thanks Kat.
@@CatherineGregoryAdventures as I'm sure you know, California is now back to non essential, person to be quarantine at home and restricted travel again. Tough to get out. Be safe and stay well. Cant wait to see your backpacking trip, I suppose in Colorado. I did get out last weekend just before lockdown started last Monday. My Hope's are high to do more traveling soon.
If you go back there in mid Sept to early October you’ll be rewarded with glorious fall colors from Durango to Silverton to Ouray to Telluride with a special stop in Ridgway.
Ms. Catherine just when I think your videos can’t be any better, you outdo yourself!!! An amazingly edited video!!! Were you nervous when you were traveling on that narrow road? I wonder if a car approaches in the opposite direction…then what? You are living your best life! I just can’t find the words to tell you how amazing you are for believing in yourself!!! Q: Before you go on these hikes do you do stretching? Do you do upper body exercises to help you with your balance? I turned 55 a few days ago. I have five years till I retire. I worry waiting for retirement is going to cause me to wait too long and my body, in five years, won’t be able to keep up with my mind! LOL 😆 God bless you Catherine! Thank you for sharing this journey with us!🌿💕🕊
Thank you. I do stretch. I just backpacked one the San Juan’s with a friend who is 67! It was not an easy trek! Just stay in shape and you can be hiking for years to come.’:)
These films capture an essence of the wondrous experience of nature- the enormous and tiny beauty- all observed and recorded. But more than that especially with the music and views they capture the undefinable , euphoric ethereal feeling that nature gives us.
When I saw you start up Camp Bird/Yankee Boy Road I thought that was going to be an adventure! Glad you found a spot to turn around before the overhang.
Ouray is one of the coolest towns ever. Such friendly people and so many outdoor activities. And the drive on the Million Dollar Hway to Durango is spectacular. But just as you said, the hiking crowds can be overwhelming so an early start is highly recommended :) Thank you so much for yet another beautiful and calming video. Be well and play safe!
Stunning Views. Looking straight down into gorge is a little unsettling but awesome. Ouray is around a hour and half from Lizard Head Wilderness area just south of Telluride CO. I understand stand they have some good trails there and 3 fourteeners there too.
Breathtaking never been to Ouray! It’s close to Silverton and Durango so again another destination on my list. Your video never disappoints it was a real pick me up today that I needed! Take care and be safe.

This December it will be 40 years since I moved from Colorado to New York. Never made it to Ouray, but now I really want to go. Great video. Thanks.
If you go back there in mid Sept to early October you’ll be rewarded with glorious fall colors from Durango to Silverton to Ouray to Telluride with a special stop in Ridgway.
That was beautiful!!! We're going to be in Colorado next year and I think make that a stop.
550 is just spectacular especially in early October. That and 12 in S. Utah just can't be beat.
Colorado is so beautiful. As always your photography and video is amazing. What did you like best about your trip if you can pick just one?
Great vid 👍🏼
I’ve spent a lot of time in the San Juan’s. Gotta get back there again soon. It’s gorgeous in the Fall too! ❤️
Wow! That is beautiful. We’ve been to Colorado but never visited Ouray. We will add that to the list!
Thanks and have a wonderful week!
There is always something so calming about a waterfall
Beautiful quaint town
Love you!
Thank you Gigi!
