I'm so glad you love it and could restore it. Looks beautiful now! The painting took a week to completely dry, so I wanted to surprise you with that... Awesome video ...you have a lot of good info here!! Thanks for sharing!
I wasn't sure if you were sending it. After no replies for so long I figured that was it. I do apologize for that. Probably the best package I've ever opened. For 34 years I've wanted to replace that knife. Wasn't expecting 3 cool gifts. Thank you very much.
I saw one of these at a garage sale the other day but someone else bought it right before I could! It was love at first sight and I'm buying one on ebay asap!!!
Your discussion is spot-on. There are so many people who don’t even pronounce his name correctly. I’ve talked to some of Bowie’s descendants, and they said their name was mispronounced even before Jim made it famous. This video earned my subscribing. I got my W49 “J” in 1987. It was the first Bowie I bought. Still have it. Love it!
I've only known this style sheath as "D-ring dangler". It's purpose is for all time wearing EDC from the waist on a belt, the D- ring allows the sheath to swivel,(a leg tie at the tip is recommended) when sitting down in vehicles or on a chair or when crouching.
Great video good info to. I have the same Western W49 M sadly i don't have original sheath but i am going have one made. Also got the Bear & Son Gold Rush too great knives. Love the video and thanks for info.
Just got myself a real w49. Been using the szco replica. I do love a dangler sheath, but i also made myself a custom 'tuck' sheath that i stick through my belt at the small of my back for when im tired of the leg bumping. Lol.
My brother has had one since the early 80's and it's a great blade and still solid as the day it was bought. Has a used patina on it now that is cool .
Sweet...congrats on recieving your W49...I still have mine...pre W49 stamp...built in 65/66, purchased new by me in 67...at the time they were made from 1095 with solid rose wood and 3/16" brass pins...unlike the later models these blades had a blended sabre grind and sharpened false edge and of course their signature S guard. The tang stamp on miine reads "WESTERN, BOWIE, U.S.A"....There was an earlier tang stamp before 65 that reads "BOWIE" on one side of the tang and on the opposite side reads "WESTERN, BOULDER, CO,". Most interesring video...thanks...woods
Such a awesome video brother, love the history, Jim bowie is a legend in Mississippi and around the world, I have 3 models of the western 49 and I love each one, I have only seen two of the ones that me and you have . I have a O, and a M, date code, they are all awesome, good job and great video my friend 👍
@@njzeigler4370 I had a new western in the 80s and lost it. This one I acquired was the same year as the one I lost so got lucky. It has the swing sheath as well. They all had those sheaths. It's my favorite Bowie.
@@Broddi169 you're sheath is a little different, yours snaps over the guard onto the blade part of the sheath at an angle.. Mine it snaps around the middle of the handle horizontally
Mine is stamped with an H, so was made in 1985. I still have it, and the three summers I worked in Yellowstone National park, I always carried it when hiking. Its in great shape, because I never had to use it. And back then no one chopped or split wood with a knife. I've retired it, and now will carry a Cold Steel 1917 Frontier Bowie knife. Its bigger, but a good knife.
The baton wood thing is silly. It's you tube nonsense. None of the frontier guys did it. I've been in the woods many times and never needed it to start a fire. I have the cold steel 49 copy the wild west Bowie.
Hello, I just won the bid on a w49 it's stamp is on the guard, western on one side & w49 on the other is your 73 marked the same? Seller claims it is possibly 68-69. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated
@@Broddi169Yes, this is the resource where I found good info...I purchased mine around 73-74...a lovely knife...😊Perhaps you could do a video on knife fighting techniques with the 49....Good video, thanks!

i was introduced to western by my former brother in law, may he rest in peace, he gave me a western lockblade similar to a buck 110 but a little bigger, i did my research and began collecting western casexx and a few other american brands. to date i have a wooden tool box full of westerns, 2 w-49s a w-66 a l-66 almost a complete set of black beautiesthe folder he gave me and a couple of others, an official scout knife fixed blade a small 3 blade pocket knife i'll have to dig it out if anyone wants the pattern number, then i got a montgomery wards western field? knife, but the bowies are an I and a K with coleman sheaths which if that's an M should have but someone gave it an older look. i like the w-49, as a kid i remember going to k-mart and just standing there staring slack jawed at the thing in the glass case with its brothers and thinking when i grow up i'm gonna get one of those. well after years of beers i finally got 2
I did the same thing at the local department store then. I did manage to buy one. Paid 50 dollars back in the 80s. Man that was exciting back then. Don't think any knife gave me that feeling again like the 49 did.
I Have a W49 that I bought new in Alaska I’m going to guess around 1990 give or take. It is stamped Western W 49 U.S.A. But it has no letter code. Do you know what that means? Thanks a
Western started the letter dating system around 1977 if memory serves me right the guard stamps are the way they did them the first few years . western made great knives !
Maybe you can answer my question(s) I have a big Western Bowie. Mine has no writing or numbers on it anywhere. Up by the handle on the blade just below the guard on one side it says, upside down BOWIE. On the other side it says. WESTERN BOULDER COLO. USA I don't know if it's a early 60's knife? Appreciate the feedback . I love the western.
I'd say they're called a Dangle sheath.
My stepfather gifted me his 1968 version Bowie back in the early eighties.
Cool knife.
Look at the literature with the knives. Never was called a dangler. That's slang made by guys who didn't know what it was called.

Good video .
I just checked my 49 and it is also an m .
I put scotch tape around the sheath where the guard hits . It keeps it from turning green .

What steel were they made out of in the 60's?
It's definitely high carbon just not sure what grade.
