Hey boys, cool book one of the best I have read!
Thanks for the kind words, but I also can't take credit. It was the great BDH that told me about this book! He also put me on to Western Knives.
I can offer to your viewers a cliff's notes style version of this book that is available online. The article is titled :
" The Western Knife Company, C. Platts & Sons Cutlery, Cattaraugus and W.R. Case and Sons, what do these knife companies all have in common?" ...enjoy😊
Let's talk soon Rick, hope you are doing ok.

Great video! I have that very same blade...with its original sheath....bought it in '74....I like it to shine, it looks like a jewel after I work the metal & the rosewood...Like minds...your info confirms what I found out about this knife...there aren't very many of these from the 'Nam period as many of them were left to other soldiers when their owners went home...they were used in all sorts of ways, but I consider it to be a fighting knife....as I understand it, Special Forces were the people that used them the most...Many thanks for this video, there are so few of them concerning this knife...& to see the very blade I have...a real treat...parker frost...although I think I am a bit late to the party...😊

    Parker Frost.
Thirty years ago I was in Tennessee and I was renewing my Blade Magazine Subscription. While there I met a fellow by the name of Bo Parker. At the same time I was making a tour around to different knife makers. I went over to Frost Knives. Told the receptionist that I wanted to see some of their knives and get a catalogue. She led me to a boardroom where they had glass display cases along the walls. As my Wife and I were looking. A very well dressed, handsome young man came in and shook our hands. He introduced himself as Jim Frost. It was a really great trip, we met a lot of great people.
Really like those Daggers and that big Bowie.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Fantastic 37 minutes Rick, very informative and entertaining. One quick confusion to be settled is that the Platts owned Western until 1984 and they sold it to Coleman. Coleman let it go to auction in 1991 and Camillus bought the rights to Western then.

The Western Bowie model you have reminds me of the Marine Raider Blade use in World War 2. A number of companies made it, during the war. If I were you the patina on the guard is not a serious issue however, the green spot on it is a reaction from the brass hilt with the leather sheath. It will eventually discolor the leather on the sheath. I would not store them together for any length of time.
Thank you for showing the book and hope you show more of it in the future. I read some about the Platt and Case connection but didn’t know of this book. It would have been enjoyable working making knives, scissors and kitchen cutlery compared to other jobs of the era. I have noticed Case made knife runs with similar serrated blades too. Russ Case was partners with Platt. Platt moved west for health reasons. He suffered from Grinder's Consumption I read from working with sandstone grinding wheels. Thank you a chance at the Parker Frost knife giveaway. 🐗👍🎅

Former Western employee here. There was only the one edition of the book. Harvey couldn’t find a publisher for the book so he opened Longs Peak Press, the address was the open field on the east side of the Longmont plant. When we were preparing for the shutdown I tossed dozens of cases of this book into the trash.

GREAT video. Really looking forward to the follow-up to this video. I'd be especially interested to see what was in the early catalogs as I have some Western and Western made Ward Master Quality knives from the 1930s - 1960s.
Western was purchased by Camillus in 1992 (thru the 2007 bankruptcy).
Western knives were as ubiquitous around here as Schrade. At least one of my first two knives was a Western (model 66, pre 1961 as it had bone handles. After that Western used Delrin). An L48 replaced the 66 in the mid 70s as my go to hunting and fishing knife into the 80s when I switched to W83 and W84 for my fixed bladed hunting knives. A 1981 Western 541 was my choice over the Buck 110. I liked the look and it wasn't as square and chunky as the 70s era 110s. I EDC'd the 521, very similar to the knife you're after, except for the cover material. I don't remember exactly when I got it but it was made in 1982 (F) and I carried well into the 2000s. Almost all of my Grandfather's fixed blades were Westerns and the pocket knife I saw him use the most was a Western 657.
Around 2010 I was disappointed to learn of Western's demise. More recently I've been on a Western binge adding mostly pre 77 folders and fixed blades to the collection. Just nabbed a 744 with near pristine bone covers (pre 1961) and a 1985ish 702 Westmark that I recall wanting way back in the 1970s but would never dream of spending more than $50 on a knife back then... I'd be too afraid to use it.
Enough rambling. Looking forward to hear about what you've discover.

Cool book recommendation from Zen Ali (who got it recommended from MesserHQ). I remember your video presentation about about Schatt and Morgan. Sure, I’ll watch it if you want to make a deep dive into it.
17:30 That is a nice Barlow. I just got a nice Imperial Barlow with similar sawcut delrin that says “Prov. R.I.”
28:50 I didn’t realize until recently that the sharpened swedge was part of the original design. Something about it being for knife-fighting purposes.
36:00 those brass liners on the Parker Frost look really thick, are there two of them?
Thank you and Merry Christmas, Warthogg. 🎄🎄🎄
